That's not an easy question to answer right now, because this my friends, is the calm before the storm. That storm comes only once a year, every year, and has for a very long time. Does the storm have a name? Yes it does... you guessed it... the storm that's brewing is the Summer ANA show, to be held this year in the great city of Boston, MA. This Summer ANA will be special for many reasons, some none of us can imagine right now, but I`ll give you three of mine. First, this is an anniversary for me, as Boston was my very first ANA in Though I`ve been back to Boston many times since then, I can't help thinking how great that is. After 28 years I`m completing one of those life circles, that those of us past 50 get to live through. I didn't have a table in I just walked the floor, selling from a box or two, and trying to pick up items I could sell at home to my customers. I would love to see the paperwork from that show. I don't think you would find any early type in high grades, or any proof gold, but I would have been busy. My purchases would have been better date circ Morgan and seated dimes, a few commemoratives, maybe a couple bu 5 libs, and some keys in the 20th century series. I also liked seated dollars, so that's the one place I may have had a crossover in my business then, and my business today. The market was tanking at that time. We had just come off the phenomenal highs of 1980, and the bust in metals. Even though gold and silver continued to ricochet up and down a few times, it was finding its bottom, and the coin market was retreating. None of that mattered to me, I had no real historical perspective then, and just kept buying and selling whatever I liked. It was great fun and ironically, I was as mesmerized by the coin market then as I am now. Did it occur to me that almost 30 years later I would be writing about this event and feeling nostalgic. No it never did. Will I be writing about the upcoming ANA after it passes 30 years from now? 2 2 of 8 7/26/2010 2:50 PM give it a try. Reason number two: This year's ANA falls on Friday the 13th. I`m not sure what that means, and I know somebody made a whole bunch of money off some movies of the same name, but frankly I would prefer it didn't. Not much we can do about that. I did see where they have holy water on sale on the Internet due to an article in my local paper this week. It seems some teacher in Norfolk was anointing her students with holy water for about three years and the Norfolk school system finally caught on. It went on to list all the really great deals one can get on holy water, so maybe I`ll look into that as a counter measure Fugio NEWMAN 9-T, R-6 PCGS VF25 Mint Error The final reason is one we have discussed before, and that's the price of gold. With any luck the price of gold will creep back over $1200, and be in record territory during this Numismatic spectacular. Gold trading well north of $1000 is a big deal that we all have taken for granted. However, it is a very meaningful in the coin business, and this will be the first ANA ever to have $1200 gold as a backdrop. Perhaps you don't collect Gold coins, and certainly not common twenties where the effect is most pronounced, but friends do not underestimate the power of $1200 dollar gold. If it hits $1300 on that Friday, I for one will be out of there spilling bottles of holy water on the way out! Okay, enough of that, on to the coin market report. During the summer, the market usually pulls in its horns. Has it this year? Yes and no. Business has remained surprisingly brisk, but prices have not really increased as we flat line there; sharp buyers continue to add to their holdings. We think this is a great time to acquire great coins and we have continued to build our inventory as we go into ANA. Though we are picky about what goes onto our list, and hundreds of coins have been sifted out the door, Danny assures me we are headed directly to my goal of 300 high quality listings before ANA. Many coins have not finished their vacations through grading, or reholdering, and will likely be added at the last minute, but our list has been on the increase for an entire month. I still think, and so does the market that high-end coins are the way to go, and items bought on price alone are going out of favor quickly. Quality never goes out of style, and though it may sound cliche, it's true. The market continues to clamor for fresh coins and interesting items that are usually 1 in 10, or 1 in 20, or sometimes 1 in 100 on the bourse floor. We have spent all year acquiring these coins, and selling many of them along the way. Our list remains Unique in this way of offering a particular type of coin, whether it be choice, or scarce, or both. I don't know of any other list that mirrors our offerings. Remember we don't just offer what we buy, we buy what we want to offer, and we sort through those larger deals we buy, to find items suitable for our list. We continue to believe the coin market will remain very resilient as we go through the end of summer, and expect some consolidation of pricing as it becomes well known that nice coins are drying up. 3 3 of 8 7/26/2010 2:50 PM I`m also told by my Gold Experts that they think the price of gold is being held down by the Government. Unless presented in movie form these conspiracy theory's are hard to follow. The best I can tell is that high gold prices tattle on the dollars mischievous behavior. It seems the Government might not want us to know the dollar is a little tipsy these days, so they enlist shadow entities to short gold, and hold the price down. Frankly, I have a hard time with this thinking, and if anyone from the government would like to comment please feel free to write me a letter, explaining just what you guys are up to. Meanwhile I can say they, the conspiracy theorist, have been right about gold moving up thus far, and every time it falls $40 dollars it moves back up $50 dollars and creep..creep..creep we go right up the ladder to higher and higher numbers. In the end, all we can do is work our own little economic plan, and I still feel rare coins are a safe place to put a little money in turbulent times. I like today's levels, and I really like the kinds of coins that keep slipping out. Take this opportunity to add something cool to your collection. When considered as a date and major type issue the 97 becomes even more collectible. With an estimated mintage of pieces and only coins known this is one tough coin. Rated an R-6 by Dannreuther and quickly becomes an R-7 for coins in graded holders. Of those known, many are not worthy of certification, and have many problems including damage and harsh cleanings.
