1 Taut hribgr HAND MADE OlaitIbri oc L s4 Trgstal Vali ISSUE no. 21 -JANUARY 1975 Published monthly by the NATIONAL CAMBRIDGE COLLECTORS, Inc. To encourage and to report the discovery of the elegant and boundless product of the Cambridge Glass Company, Cambridge, Ohio A Message from your President It's a new year We trust that you all had a tremendously joy - ous Holiday. Assuming that you were all good girls and boys, your stock - ings must have been abound with good things Cambridge? In the next few weeks, let us hear about some of those special Cambridge gifts so that we might share the news with our other readers. We already know of one fortunate collector who found a Dresden etched three piece Ivory Console Set with applied color under her tree. She couldn't have been more excited or pleased. Mark your calendars ror Sunday,February 2, This is the date of the next quarterly Meeting to be held in Cambridge, Ohio. Check further in this issue of the CRYSTAL BALL for time, place and other details. Here's hoping for good weather so as many as possible of our many, many good mem - bers may attend. At this meeting the Nominating Committee will announce their slate of Candidates for new Board of Directors members. At this time the meeting will be open for any additional nominations from the floor. If you have any member in mind who you feel would be a good addition to our present Board, be sure to attend the meeting so you can amke your nomina - tions. Board of Directors Members are for a term of four years. Our good griend, Charles Upton, certainly made a speedy recovery from his stay in the hospital. It's really good to see you on the go again, Charles. We have been getting some recent mail from members interested in forming or being apart of Cambridge Study groups in their areas. We will be publishing names of members in the CRYSTAL BALL so that other interested members may contact these people. A sincere thank you to two dedicated Cambridge Collectors, and Club members, Carol and EdFrindy from Warren,Michi - gan, who made my recent stay in De - troit most pleasant. Carol and Ed invited me to their home to see their beautiful Cambridge and I was served a delicious brunch on none other than their exquisite Cambridge Rosepoint. It's people like this, that make be - longing to National Cambridge Collectors a most regarding experience. May the New Year bring to our members and readers "all good things" and may National Cambridge Collectors grow and grow and growl "Ro-e,e4.7T- CO'/ RENEWAL If the date on your address label is it is time to renew your subscription.

Cia /Yews QUARTERLY MEETING - Feb. 9, 1975 (see details on page 8) HOKEY POKEY NEWS The bovember meeting of the Hokey Pokey study group was held at the home of Dave and Sue Rankin in Englewood,Ohio on November 24. There were ten members present. The topic for our meeting was Cambridge Candlesticks, with all members contributing representative items from their collections. In all we examined 35 different shapes in 21 colors. An attempt was made to place each example in the time frame of it's production in order to create a panorama of design and color change. We examined examples of small and large plain and ornate, clear and opaque, and many combinations of the above only to find when we were done that we had hardly made a dent in the total Cambridge production of candlesticks. Show and Tell as always was a highlight of the meeting. We have found that Show and Tell along with the rotation of our meeting site has been an invaluable aid to our knowledge of Cambridge Glass as it has given all of us a chance to not only see but to handle many pieces which we have only seen in books or catalogs. This meeting proved to be no exception with the appearance of a 13"Draped Lady with a frosted base. We found upon careful examination that the base was frosted in order to camouflage mold marks and cooling cracks. We also examined a frosted Topaz berry bowl in the Weatherford pattern, a decanter in Apple Green with hollow blown stopper etched #758. The 758 etching is very similar although not identical to Chintz. Two 4"Apple Green swans with candlestick inserts also were displayed and all three sizes of the Cambridge birds made their appearance in frosted Crystal. The refreshments were eggnog served in a Buzz Saw Punch Bowl and Christmas cookies on Cambridge plates to start the Holiday Season off with plenty of calories.

3 AOLLECTORS AORNER Here's hopeing all of you had a good holiday season! Did SANTA bring you lots of Cambridge glass? The old fat man gave my wife and I a nice early present. Would you believe a Carmen crackle, nude goblet? We picked it up at a recent show in Columbus, Ohio. Before I get to far along, I want to set the record straight. Two months ago I told you all about a nice Near Cut, Daisy water set, ruby flashed. I said the price was nearing Well folks, I did it again! I received a letter from the past owner and she set me straight on it. The set went for My apologies to anyone wh3 went out and paid B for a similar set because I led them astray. Now that we are starting another year together, let both of us take a step back and look at a few things. This column that I'M writing is called "COLLECTOR'S CORNER". What does that mean to all of you'f To me, it should be a column written about all the collectors or members we have. The way it has been going, thois I sit down and tell you what I have seen and what I want you to know. Maybe we should call this column "Fireside Chit-Chats With Frank". OAH, I say! Come on people I need your help! What I would like to do this year would be, run different articles on your collections. If you will send me a letter and tell me all about your collrtions everyone can enjoy your Cambridge Glass, I think it would be interesting if you would give me a run down on what you like best. I will use your first name only and no mention of where you live. Come on now, let's make this a real "COLLECTOR'S CORNER"! Did any of you people receive a membership to the NCC as a Christmas present? If so, Let's hear from you. 3 The recent goodies that I have seen are: a Carmen, sugar and creamer with Dresden etching in gold; Royal Blue, Caprice jug in a Farber insert; Mandrian Gold, Mt.Vernon candy dish; four inch Apple Green swans with candel inserts and last but not least a cup and saucer with Willow etching in Nankin Green enameling. 5 fcow 4-1 Orekt13 by Bill Smith The flower holder for this month is the Figure holder that is found most often of all the Figures. In the Cambridge area she is commonly called by the name Draped Lady. Officially, in publications by the Cambridge Glass Co., we have number references to her only. This figure was manufactured under three number s at least as a flower holder. The thirteen inch figure was number 513,the eight inch was number 518 and the oval base variety carried the number 849. The 1930 catalog from which these numbers were obtained, listed only this figure as having the ova/ base. The base type in this catalog was all of the number two type as shown. In addition to this use for flower holders the figure was used on a short flat type base for a lamp. The base had a hole in the back of it for the insertion of the tubing that was used to support the lamp socket and to conceal the cord. The base also had a notch to permit the cord exit. The figure was made in a wide color range. Nearly all of the transparent colors have been found recently and also a couple in Grown Tuscan. We also have one unconfirmed report of a black or Ebony figure being found. It is also Interesting to note that early advertising of these figures stated that they were being made in Crystal, Amber-glo, Peach-blo, Emerald, and Willow Blue. We would be very interested in hearing from anyone with information as to any figures in opaque colors that have been found. a light blue color, not Moonlight. This color has since been identified as the Willow Blue mentioned above. It was introduced in the late Twenties. Late 1928 or early There are also several indicators appearing that the Emerald color mentioned above is the light green color that most of us are now calling "Apple". If any of you readers would have any definite information regarding the use of a name "Apple Green" by Cambridge Glass, please let us know. This could be from Cambridge ads, catalogs, or price lists. In fact, any official Cambridge literature. Please indicate where you have obtained your information. Many of us have been collecting Cambridge for a long period of time and others of us for shorter periods of time, but regardless of the time element, we have all found that there are a great many questions about this company and it's product that have not as yet been answered in present publications. One of the reasons for this column and for that matter, the paper itself, is to further the knowledge and to try to provide answers to many of the questions. A great many of you readers are never heard from during the course of the year. If each of you would contribute one new bit of information to this publication each year, we would have more than two hundred of those questions answered. It would not be necessary for you to write an accomplished article, tho' this would be more than welcomed, just send your information to any of the many addresses that appear each issue and one of us will get your information in to this publication for all to appreciate. You can also contribute to this effort by letting us know what your questions are. Please take the time to let someone on the staff of this paper hear from you soon. W. C. (Bill) Smith 4003 Old Columbus Road Springfield, Ohio Collect Cambridge While we are discussing color, we would be remiss not to mention some local discussion we are now having regarding colors.
