SCHOOL OF MEDICINE RURAL CLINICAL SCHOOL Janine Wyatt Academic Program Coordinator University of Queensland Australia What they have said and done, and What They Are Doing Now
The University of Queensland ranks 55 th globally and second in Australia in relation to the Academic Ranking of World Universities.
2016 Medical student numbers Year Year Year Year 4-497
MD Postgraduate Medical Program Years 1 and 2 combine biomedical sciences, public health, medical ethics and clinical skills training in a case-based learning context, focused around a series of patient-centred cases, each designed to highlight principles and issues in health and disease. Early patient contact, clinical reasoning and research training are embedded to develop advanced clinical skills and medical knowledge required for evidence-based clinical practice. In Years 3 and 4 clinical placements are organised around 10 core medical disciplines delivered across 11 clinical schools in Queensland, Brunei and United States.
Year 3 medical student programs: Extended Placement Program (EPP) - Two rotations in the same rural location = 16 weeks Rural Longlook Program (RLP) - Five rotations in the same rural location = 40 weeks Students self select and must be of good academic standing, with a rural background or have a demonstrated keen interest in rural and primary care.
The aim of the RLP and EPP is to identify students from rural backgrounds and/or students with a keen interest in rural medicine and provide them with an extended rural exposure. Program objectives include: To encourage interested students to pursue careers, in particular rural medicine, in rural communities. To use rural medicine as the core of the programs experience to provide students with a sound pedagogical experience in patient-centred, community based medicine in selected rural Queensland locations. To strengthen and enhance the relationships between rural communities and tertiary teaching institutions. To develop distance education strategies, technology and capacity in medical education.

2011 RLP - What they said I ve a modicum of confidence regarding my practical skills and my wish to develop them is a major reason for my applying for the programme. I have a rural background. I know and enjoy the rural lifestyle and view immersing myself in it once more as a real benefit of the Programme. Andrew (2011) I m excited by the prospect of the Rural Longlook Program, and would love to bring the skills and experiences I already have to bear in my training next year. Madelon (2011) As I m seriously considering applying for the Rural Generalist Pathway in 4 th year, I feel that the Longlook program will give me great experience and insight into the healthcare, people and culture of such places I hope to eventually practice in. Kendra (2011)
2011 RLP (withdrew) - What they said I am keen to be one of the students on the rural longlook program as I feel that the experience will make be a better doctor. Danielle (2011) I expect there would be greater access to patients and medical staff to learn medicine and that I would benefit from the closer contact with medical staff and continuity of learning over the course of Cameron (2011) This great opportunity to spend the entirety of third year in a rural centre promises a wealth of medical experience whilst enjoying the community lifestyle rural towns offer, and I have the skills and background to ensure that I have the full experience. 13 EPP (withdrew) What they said I believe I would bring a keen enthusiasm to an extended rural placement. I want to be able to get to know the community. I would also love the chance to become integrated into the medical team. I would do this in a whole hearted fashion because I want to learn as much as possible about what it is to be a rural doctor, in preparation for making informed career decisions in the future. Anna (2011) I hope to gain awareness for the intricacies of a functioning rural health centre and get experience with some of the challenges that are dealt with, preparing me for working as a remote doctor in the future. Rohani (2011) I initially had elected to apply for the EPP with the opportunity that it may broaden my appreciation of rural medicine. Shao (2012) I believe the extended rural placement is a fantastic opportunity for me to get more involved with rural and remote communities and get the best possible clinical experience. Sheree (2011)
