3 Page 1 [1] Multi Stuff Two diamonds is a weak two bid in either major suit. Multi only applies in 1 st, 2nd and 3 rd seats. All major suit bids are pass or correct (but if you rebid the major it is real now). We have the same suit quality requirements as we would with a non multi preempt. When responding and showing a maximum - we must have 2 of top 3 honors in the suit 2 - A weak two in either major, 3-10 HCP and may be a five card suit with some respect for vulnerability. In first and second seat we have a reasonable suit, two of the top four honors with some texture. In third seat we can have anything. Responses to 2 : 2 - Pass or correct 2 - Pass or correct, showing no interest in spades and some interest in hearts Pass - Weak two bid in spades 2 NT - minimum weak two bid in hearts 3 - medium strength weak two bids in hearts 3 - maximum strength weak two bid in hearts 2 NT - asks: 2NT followed by 4 (or spades when hearts are indicated) is forcing to game. When responding we show range based upon vulnerability. 3 - Any minimum in light of the vulnerability 3 - game forcing, asking opener to bid the major he does not hold; Opener rebids 3 with spades and 3 with hearts. 3 - opener should pass or correct 3 - opener should pass or correct 4 - to play 4 - to play 3 - Medium hand with hearts 4NT - rkc 3 - Medium hand with spades 4NT - RKC 3 - Maximum hand with hearts 4NT - RKC 3 NT - Maximum hands with spades 4NT - RKC 3 - non-forcing 3 - natural and game forcing 3 - pass or correct 3 - invitational and natural 3 NT - to play 4 - asks opener to transfer into his major suit. You want to play the hand. 4 - asks opener to bid game in his major. 4 - pass or correct 4 - to play If they intervene: Over 2 - Pass - 2 NT: If they bid a major: Double - This is my suit Pass - I have the other suit, minimum Bids - I have the other suit, maximum - must bid a fragment not your suit

If they double in direct seat: Pass - 5+ diamonds (let's play here if you have two or more) Redouble - scramble no strong preference for either major 2 - pass or correct, would be willing to bid higher in spades 2 - would raise weak 2 to at least three Hearts and spades at any level (except 4 )- pass or correct 2 NT - asks as if out of competition 3, 3 - Natural [2] GOOD BAD 2NT Good bad only applies in direct seat after rho has bid a suit higher that 2 Good bad does not apply if We are in a game force If we have made a preemptive jump overcall If they have bid a natural 2 If we are in balancing seat If game is no longer in the picture Directly over their 2 level overcall Kathy only o 1 - (2 ) 2NT not good bad If we could have Q bid below our suit at the three level to show limit+ values. If we have supported we would always lead high from three small, low from an honor.

12 Page 10 [15] Lead from AK vs suit. We lead A from AK against suits. K from AK at five level and above. [16] Signaling vs. Suits SIGNALING VS SUITS In general our first priority is to give attitude. Highest affordable to encourage, lowest to discourage. No middle cards unless in clearly defined suit preference situations listed below. Suit preference in trumps. Exception would be in ruffing situations. Where we have led apparent shortness. 1) If a switch is called for, i.e: Lead of the Ace and dummy tables with Kx, KQxxx if declarer is clearly ruffing the continuation If partner is leading a likely singleton High = suit pref for higher Med = Continue or trump Low = low preference 2) If the dummy is entryless with a long running suit: We give surrogate count for the long suit. 3) All other situations: i.e. a switch is not clearly called for at trick two. A) Any time we have known length 5+ High = suit pref for higher Med = Continue or trump Low = low preference B) Any time we do not have known length. Low = does not like suit led or may want a shift High = like the suit [17] Signaling vs. Notrump Against notrump we give attitude if Q or higher wins in dummy. Count for jack or lower. If we break a suit in the middle of the hand we tend to lead 4 th best if we like the suit, higher otherwise. When returning partner s suit we lead original 4 th best. [18] Signaling vs. Suits Five Level and above. At the five level and higher we give count unless an obvious suit preference is called for i.e. partner leads a likely singleton. [19] Smith Echo Smith vs NT always on except where there are no outside entries to dummy. Smith if you want the suit returned. Third hand would smith if they have other good cards in the suit i.e. higher touching. If we have singleton we give smith with another suit discard. HiLo would encourage.

14 Page 12 [22] Two Way Checkback Two way check back is on over all auctions in which there is a (suit bid) response and the opener rebids 1 NT on the second turn. With two way checkback: 2 = starts all invitational or getout sequences. forces 2 for minor getout or other invitational sequences. For a getout responder bids 2 and can pass 2 or bid 3 weak. 1 / - 1, 1NT - 2, 2-3 = weak. 2 = Starts all game forcing sequences Is usually checkback but could be a GF planned auction. 2 - starts all invitational sequences. If partner doesn t pass 2 or bid 3 they have an invitational hand. 2 followed by 2NT shows invitational with clubs because 3 would have been to play. 2 followed by 2 of a major shows an invite with the expected distribution based upon prior bidding. 2 starts all forcing sequences. All jumps in suits are forcing and are picture bids showing good suits. Jumps in new suit show at least 5-5 and good in both suits. 1 / NT - 2 = less than an invite, may be five but generally six. 2 = inv 5-4 2NT = natural 2-2, 2 = invitational with 5 hearts 2 = invitational with 4-4 in majors 2NT = invitational with clubs. 3 = weak, to play 3 = inv with diamonds 3 = inv. with six hearts 1 / - 1, 1NT - 2 = weak 5-4 or = weak 2NT = inv natural 2-2, 2 = invitational with 5 and 4. 2 = inv with 5 spades 2NT = inv with clubs. 3 = inv 5-5 [23] BART 1-1NT = ART and forces 2 for various descriptive invitational auctions 1-1NT = ART and asks about heart length/quality. May be inv in hearts or other invitational hand.

Pass = interest with out first round in their suit 3NT = first or second round in their suit and serious slam try. Cuebid = first round control in their suit with interest but no other first round control. If they cuebid our suit, double = shortness somewhere 4 of our suit is weakest. [25] Kokish = either hearts or 25+ balanced, forces = asks what hand type. Opener bids 2NT with the balanced 25+. This is unlimited and cannot be passed. System on as if 2NT opened. Any other bid confirms hearts and logical inferences apply. i.e. new suits show at least 4 or a concentration of values with 5+ hearts, 3NT shows long good hearts and willingness to play there something like Kx, KQTxxxx, Axx, A Interference over 2 Dbl (redouble) = second neg and three or more clubs Bid (doubl)e = second neg. Pass = negative response wth fewer than three clubs Interference at 3 level double = double negative with at least two trumps.

16 Page 14 [26]MINORWOOD 4 minor is KC when: We made any raise except for 1 min - 3 minor We jump to 4 of our minor by either person after a 2/1 After minor is set as trumps through fourth suit/forcing raise or new minor forcing In competition if we jump to 4 of our minor NOTE: Anytime we have agreed on a minor and we are in a game forcing auction four of our minor is ALWAYS key card. Whether we could have bid it earlier in the auction does not matter. It is always key card. This has the advantage of simplicity. If four of our minor is forcing and natural it is keycard with the following exceptions. 1min - 4 min = Preemptive Key card does not apply when: A non jump to 4 of our minor in comp When we are looking for 3 NT - struggle auction if it is not a GF auction. A raise of a minor after a forcing NT auction i.e.: 1-1NT = natural and invitational. If it is the first time we have supported the suit unless it is a jump in a 2/1 auction. After a reverse and jump to four of reverser s minor. We respond with standard RKC responses. 4NT and 5 of our minor is always natural [27] Exclusion Excusion applies when it is a jump shift to over four of our agreed suit/ However splinters have priority. 1-3, 4 = splinter 1-2, 4 / = exclusion 1-2NT, 4 = exclusion [28] Kickback Kickback applies when four of a minor is natural and forcing. Specifically only in these three situations: After two club opening and raise to four of opener s minor o * = Kickback o * After Opener s reverse or jump shift and partner s raise to 4 of their minor * = kickback o = kick back o = kickback o = kickback After Opener s jump rebid and a raise o o 1-1, 3-4, 4 = Kickback. It is never on in a previously bid suit. 1-1, 3-4, 4 = Offer to play 4 = Kickback??? Kickback does not apply in a suit that has previously been bid naturally with one exception. ** Reverser s second suit if it is a minor. If another higher suit is available on the 4 level that is kickback Responses and rules are the same as for MINORWOOD. 4NT and 5 of our minor are to play. All other are followup Q or K ask.

17 Page 15 [29] Super Gerber 03,14, 2 min 2 max applies when the last bid was 3NT unless it is not logical to apply. i.e. 1-3, 3NT - 5 = to play. [30] Grand Slam Force When clubs are trump: 5 NT 6-0 or two When diamonds are trump: 5 NT one of three 7 - two When hearts is trump: 5 NT or queen 6 - asks 6 - denies the queen 7 - confirms the queen 6 - Ace or King 6 - Ace or King with extra length 7 - two When spades are trump: 5 NT Queen 6 - Ace or King 6 - Ace or king with extra length 7 - two [31] Baron Baron 5 applies after a Quantitative raise and in other NT auctions General Rule: When we are in a notrump auction and one side jumps to 5 ; that is baron. It asks partner to bid a 5 or 6 card suit on the six level. If they don t have a 5 card or longer suit they bid 5NT Then we wiggle to find our 4-4 fit. Typical auctions: 1NT - 5 1NT - 4, 4x - 5, 5NT = no 5 or 6 card suit 1NT - 4, 4x - 5, 5NT - 6 = my first 4 card suit 1NT = 5 + card club suit. Advancer cannot pass unless they have at least 3 clubs. 2NT - 5 2NT - 3, 3NT - 5 1NT 4NT 5-0 aces 5 = 1 ace 5 = 2 aces 5 = 3+ aces and is baron 6x = 3+ aces and a 5+ card suit. 1NT 4NT 5 / / 5NT = to play

18 Page 16 [32] Rusinow Honor Leads vs. NT A from AKx or AKxx K is our power lead. Partner should give honor or count Q shows the K or shortness J shows the Q or shortness (doesn t deny the A) 10 shows the J or shortness (doesn t deny higher honors) Exceptions: Partner s suit Side suit by preempter. If partner preempts then leads a side suit Rusinow does not apply. This is also true for our 2 / openings. Leader could not keep bidding open at one level. i.e. passed partner s opening bid. [33] Sprung Jumps after 1 minor 1 major a jump shift to an in-between suit at the three level shows 3 cards in the major and 6+ in the minor. Invitational values / 3 = 3 card raise with invitational+ values holding a good long minor and three card major support. xx, AKx, Kx, AKQxxx or xx, KQx, Ax, AKJxxx. 1-1 / 3-4 = not forcing 3 = presumably trying for NT, may pass 4 Any bid higher than 4 is a slam try. Only applies if there is an in-between suit to bid. Says nothing about diamond holdings unless partner has a choice of in-between bids. [34] Drury Drury is off in comp 2 = 4 card support constructive + 2 = asks if constructive or limit Return to suit = constructive with no shortness Lowest other = 4 card constructive with a singleton = asks 2 = balanced constructive 2 = constructive with shortness 2NT = asks for shortness, respond L for L 2NT = limit with shortness 3 = limit with shortness 3 = limit with shortness = asks 2 = balanced constructive 2 = constructive with shortness 2 = to play 2NT = asking for shortness, respond L for L 2NT = limit with shortness 3 = limit with shortness 3 = limit with shortness 2 = Limit with three card support.

19 Page 1 DEFENSES TO ENEMY CONVENTIONS [D1] Interference over our Notrump Opening General Rules: Doubles by the NT opener at the two level = take out 1NT P P, dbl = take out 1NT P P, dbl = take out. Exception: if partner has acted i.e. bid stayman or transferred. Bids by opps: Dbls if penalty oriented (high cards or stated as penalty) our runouts apply (See Runouts on Page 2) Otherwise system on 2 / = If for majors Dbl = at least inv values and defense to at least one major or advance for stopper Q 2 = minors competitive 2 = minors GF 2 = natural nf 2NT = Lebensohl 3 / = nat forcing 3 / = shortness (tends to be short in other major) 4NT asks for longer minor 2 = If for specific major (i.e. brozel which is and lower) dbl = negative around the major, may just be invitational hand 2 their major = GF stayman with lebensohl implications 2 other = to play 2NT = lebensohl 2 = All other dbl = stayman system on Other bids at two level ( ) If Natural Dbl = negative at least inv values, may not have perfect shape 2 level bids = to play Lebensohl around the suit.
