If you are learning the system for the first time, we suggest learning the rest of the system first while using an NT in 3rd red or 4th before adding these modifications. 1st, 2nd, 3rd NV 3rd V, 4th 1D 8-14, 5+ diamonds 1N 10 (or 11) to C/1N N Same 1C/2N Same 1C/3N Same 1C/3H/3N , balanced, 2+ diamonds OR 10-14, 5+ diamonds Same 1C/4N Same 1C/3H/4N Same

RESPONSES AND REBIDS Responses to 1C No Interference BUPH (By UnPassed Hand): 1D 0-8, artificial 1H 9+, 5+ hearts, game forcing 1S 9+, 5+ spades, game forcing 1NT 9-11, balanced, could have one or both four card majors or a weak five card minor 2C 9+, 5+ clubs, game forcing 2D 9+, 5+ diamonds, game forcing 2H 5-8, 6 hearts w/ 2 of the top 3 honors, non-forcing 2S 5-8, 6 spades w/ 2 of the top 3 honors, non-forcing 2NT or 18+, balanced, could have one or both four card majors or a weak five card minor, game forcing 3C 9+, or , game forcing 3D 9+, or , game forcing 3H 5-8, 7 hearts w/ 2 of the top 3 honors, non-forcing 3S 5-8, 7 spades w/ 2 of the top 3 honors, non-forcing 3NT 15-17, balanced, could have one or both four card majors or a weak five card minor No Interference BPH (By Passed Hand): 1D 0-6, artificial (0-4 if it contains a five card suit) 1H 5-7, 5+ hearts, non-forcing 1S 5-7, 5+ spades, non-forcing 1NT 7-9 (7-10 if VUL), balanced, could have one or both card majors or a weak five card minor 2C 5-7, 5+ clubs, non-forcing 2D 5-7, 5+ diamonds, non-forcing With an overcall: PASS Not enough values to DOUBLE and/or a penalty pass (hoping for a reopening double). DOUBLE 5+ (1-level), 6+ (2-level), 7+ (3-level), if DBLer bids a new suit later, it creates a game force New Suit 5-8, constructive, non-forcing showing 5+ cards in the bid suit Cuebid 9+, a two or three suited hand 1NT 6-8 with a stopper 2NT 9-11 with a stopper 3NT with a stopper * In response to a DOUBLE after a forcing club, opener's simple (non-jump) rebid is forcing one round through 2S (i.e. 1C - 2D - DOUBLE - PASS: 2S is forcing, 2NT or higher is not with the exceptions of a cuebid or 4NT Blackwood). * A jump in a new suit retains the same meaning as without the overcall (i.e. 1C - 1S overcall - 3C is still a with a short minor). * If the oppenents make a conventional overcall where the actual suits are unknown (like Suction), there is no cuebid available until their suit or suits are disclosed. * In response to a 1NT bid after an overcall is made, opener's cheapest club bid is Stayman. 2D, 2H and 2S by opener are transfers. This may seem strange to transfer into the weak hand, but this is important because opener may need to signoff in a suit on some hands, and want to describe his strength/shape on others. * In response to a 2NT bid after an overcall is made, 3C is stayman and a new suit is forcing. * In response to a 3NT bid after an overcall is made, 4C is stayman, 4D is forcing, game bids are to play. * NOTE: Without the overcall, the cheapest club bid would be Stayman, and new suits are natural and forcing (see Rebids after 1C - 1NT/2NT/3NT).

After a 1C - DOUBLE: PASS 0-3 HCP 1D 4-6 HCP (artificial) RDBL 7-8 HCP * All other bids retain the same meaning as without the double. Rebids after 1C - 1D 1H/1S/2C/2D 5+ cards, non-forcing. 1NT 15-18, balanced 2H/2S/3C/3D Forcing, equivalent to a strong 2 2NT 21-23, balanced 3H or 30-31, balanced 3NT 24-25, balanced 4NT 28-29, balanced * In response to a 1NT rebid, 2D/2H/2S are transfers. 2C is stayman, responses: 2D 15-16, No Four Card Major 2H 15-16, 4 Hearts (maybe 4 spades) 2S 15-16, 4 Spades (not 4 hearts) 2NT 17-18, No Four Card Major 3C 17-18, 4 Hearts (not 4 spades) 3D 17-18, 4 Spades (not 4 hearts) 3H 17-18, 4 Hearts & 4 Spades * In response to another NT rebid (i.e. 1C - 1D - 2NT), cheapest club bid is stayman (standard responses) and cheapest diamond, heart, spade bids are transfers. * In response to a suit, a jump is a splinter, and a double jump is a void splinter. * In response to a game forcing bid (2H/2S/3C/3D), cheapest minor is negative (no A or K). Rebids after 1C - 1H (or similarly after 1C - 1S): 4H!15-17, no singleton or void, no five card suit 3H 19+, or slightly less with a five card or longer suit 2H Everything else, the most common response Rebids after 1C - 2C (or similarly after 1C - 2D) 2NT Probably balanced (or a monster hand that wants to hear more from partner). 3C 3+ cards in clubs, says nothing about values, if only 3C shouldn't be NT balanced * Single jumps shows solid suits and demand cuebids from partner (i.e. 1C - 2C - 3H). * Double jumps show splinters in support of responder's suit (i.e. 1C - 2C - 4H). Rebids after 1C - 1NT/2NT/3NT * Cheapest club bid (2C/3C/4C) is Stayman. * Suit bid at next level is natural promising 5+ cards and is forcing unless the bid is already at game in which

case it is a signoff. * A jump in suit below game demands cuebids (except 1C - 1N - 3C is natural). * In these and all game forcing auctions, when a fit has been found, the rules of fast arrival apply. * When cuebidding takes place, bid only first round controls first, then second round controls if you get a chance the next time around. Rebids/Responses after 1C - 3C (3D asks): 3H Club singleton ( ) 3S Diamond singleton ( ) Rebids/Responses after 1C - 3D (3H asks): 3S Heart Singleton ( ) 3NT Spade Singleton ( ) * Bidding known shortage asks for controls (1st step, 0-2; 2nd step, 3; 3rd step, 4; etc.) Responses to 1D 1H Natural and forcing, 4+ cards 1S Natural and forcing, 4+ cards 1NT Size and Shape (SAS) NT (on in competition) 2C Non-forcing, constructive 2D Balanced hand with 3 card support (rarely honor doubleton) and not enough for game 3D Not enough values for game, could be made on 3 diamonds because of LOTT 3NT To play 4D Not enough values for game, 5 or 6 diamonds 4H/4S/5D To play * Jump shifts are not forcing, but show a good six card suit, about HCP, and invite 3NT. * Specifically when the auction goes 1D - 1H/S, a 1NT rebid by opener promises exactly 3 cards in responder's major. A raise promises 4 and any other bid denies 3 card support. The 1NT bidder will usually have a singleton or void somewhere in the hand. * After 1D - 1H/1S - 1NT - 2C (artifical), opener's rebids 2D with any minimum and makes the most natural description with a maximum (not 2D). A new suit by the 2C bidder is forcing. * After 1D - 1H/1S - 1NT - 3C is invitational showing 4 of the major and 6 clubs. * When partner bids 1H or 1S after we open 1D, a jump to 2NT shows a void and four card support for partner (look under Responses to 1H for responses and rebids). A jump to 3NT shows five card support. * After an opening bid of 1D/1H/1S, all bids retain their same meaning even after a double or an overcall. Responses to 1H (and similarly in response to 1S) 1S Natural and forcing, 4+ spades 1NT Size and Shape (SAS) NT (on in competition) 2C Non-forcing, constructive 2D Non-forcing, constructive 2H Any hand with 3 trump (occasionally 4) that has no interest in game. 2NT Forcing raise. Is bid on a hand that only needs to know about controls. Opener bids cheapest control, 3 of trump suit with no first round control outside of trump, but w/ the trump ace, 3NT with no first round control

at all or 4D with first round controls in clubs and diamonds or 4H with first round controls in clubs, dimaonds and hearts. 3H Any hand with 4 trump (occasionally 3 or 5 depending on VUL and distribution) that has no interest in game. 3NT To play 4H Could be to make, or preemptive, let them guess! * Just like after 1D, after 1H - 1S - 1NT - 2C is artifical. Opener's rebids 2D with any minimum and 2H with a maximum. * A 2/1 is non-forcing. Opener should raise with any decent hand and support. * Jumps are non-forcing, could purely preemptive. * In response to 1H - 1S: 2NT shows a hand with 4 card support and a void. 3C asks, the lower bid shows the lower void, the higher bid shows the higher void (i.e. 1H - 1S - 2NT - 3C - 3D would show a club void, 3H a diamond void). * 3NT shows the same as 2NT except it promises 6+ hearts, 5+ card spade support, but not necessarily a void. 4C asks: 4 of suit bid shows , 4 of other suit shows void in bid suit, 4NT is a club void. Size and Shape (SAS) NT (on in competition) If partner opens 1D/1H/1S, a bid of 1NT asks for size and shape. It doesn't promise any values, but is generally done with a good hand. This is the most frequently occurring response to one of a suit. In response to 1NT: 2C 8-11, 5 card suit 2D 12-14, 5 card suit, no other five card suit 2H 8-11, 6 card suit 2S 12-14, 6 card suit, no other four or five card suit 2NT 12-14, 5-5, unknown 5 card suit 3C asks, lowest bid shows lowest suit, next highest bid shows next highest, etc. For example, after 1S - 1NT - 2NT - 3C (asking): 3D 5+ spades, 5+ clubs 3H 5+ spades, 5+ diamonds 3S 5+ spades, 5+ hearts 3NT 12-14, 6-5, unknown 5 card suit 4C asks, lowest bid shows lowest suit, next highest bid shows next highest, etc. * New suits at the three-level show 12-14, 6 in the opened suit and 4 in the bid suit.(i.e. 1S - 1NT - 3C shows 6 spades and 4 clubs). * Good 11s can be upgraded to the range. * With a good hand, you can start with the SAS NT and bid a new suit, creating a force. * In the auction 1S - 1NT - 2C - 2D, 2D is artificial asking about hearts. In response to 2D: 2H 0-2 hearts 2S 3 hearts 2NT (4 hearts) 3-level bids show 4 hearts and 3 cards in bid suit (a hand) 4-level bids show 4 hearts and 4 cards in bid suit (a hand) * In the auction 1S - 1NT - 2D, 2H asks for heart length. In response to 2H:

2S 0-2 hearts 2NT 3 hearts 3H (4 hearts) 3-level bids show 4 hearts and 3 cards in bid suit (a hand) 4-level bids show 4 hearts and 4 cards in bid suit (a hand) * Because 1S - 1NT - 2C - 2D is bid with 4 or 5 hearts, 1S - 1NT - 2C - 2H promises 6+ hearts. In response to 1D or 1H, if you have a major to bid at the one-level you should just bid it, unless you need to find out about size and shape (probably because you are in possible slam territory). With the good hand (i.e. AKQxx Ax Kxx Kxx), bid 1NT and then bid your suit at the two or three level which is forcing and promises 5+. When the opponents interfere with 2C or 2D after a SAS NT: PASS 8-11, 5 card suit DOUBLE 12-14, 5 card suit Cheapest Bid 8-11, 6 card suit Next Cheapest Bid 12-14, 6 card suit When the oppenents interfere with 2H or 2S after a SAS NT: PASS 8-11 DOUBLE * If 2NT or one of the other 2-suited bids are still available after an overcall, make your normal rebid (all other bids retain their original meaning). Semi-Buggerized Dozel (Bidding after we open 1D/1H/1S and they overcall 1NT) Since it is harder to double the oppenents for penalty on a light opening bid, we can use the double more efficiently. The structure resembles DONT and Brozel, hence the name Dozel. The two suited bids show 5-4. The one suited bids show 6 (or very good 5) card suits. After 1D: 2C C&H or C&S 2D D 2H H&S 2S S DOUBLE C or H After 1H: 2C C&D or C&S 2D D&H 2H H 2S S DOUBLE C or D After 1S: 2C C&D or C&H 2D D&H 2H H 2S S DOUBLE C or D

Responses to 1NT (10-14 or 11-14) 2C Invitational Stayman 2D Game Forcing Stayman (BUPH) 2H/2S To Play 2NT Invitational 3C/3D To Play 3H 5/5 majors, Invitational 3S 5/5 majors, Forcing * 2D is natural by a passed hand. * Lebensohl (slow shows) * Touching Suit Escapes * If the oppenents interfere with an artifical bid, double shows values and invites partner to double their subsequent bids. Responses to 1NT (14-16) 2C Garbage Stayman 2D/2H Transfers 2S Minor Suit Stayman 2NT Invitational 3C/3D Invitational, 6 card suit, 2 of the top 3 honors 3H 5/5 majors, Invitational 3S 5/5 majors, Forcing (very rare) * Lebensohl, Touching Suit Escapes and the same rules about doubling apply to the Strong NT. Rebids after 1NT (Weak) - 2C (Invitational Stayman) 2D Minimum, No Four Card Major 2H Minimum, 4 Hearts (maybe 4 Spades) 2S Minimum, 4 Spades (not 4 Hearts) 2NT Maximum, No Four Card Major 3C Maximum, 4 Hearts (not 4 spades) 3D Maximum, 4 Spades (not 4 hearts) 3H Maximum, 4 Hearts & 4 Spades * 2C Invitational Stayman is used when responder wants to find out point count, because he needs that information to go to game or slam. * A maximum is generally 13-14, but can be a good 12 if the range is * After promising a maximum with 2NT, 3C, 3D or 3H you are in a game forcing auction and rules of fast arrival apply. * Jumps create a game force and show 5 card suits (i.e. 1NT - 2C - 2H - 3S). * After 1NT - 2C - 2D - 2S shows 5 spades (since there is no need to show a 4 card suit) and invitational values. * After 1NT - 2C - 2H - 2S shows 4+ spades and invitational values (rebidding shows 5). Rebids after 1NT (Weak) - 2D (Game Forcing Stayman) 2H 4 Hearts 2S 4 Spades

3C Good 5/6 Clubs, No Four Card Major 3D Good 5/6 Diamonds, No Four Card Major * Rules of fast arrival apply (i.e. 1NT - 2D - 2H - 3H shows slam interest). Touching Suit Escapes After 1NT - DBL: 2C Clubs & Diamonds 2D Diamonds & Hearts 2H Hearts & Spades 2S Spades RDBL One Suiter PASS Forces XX, shows a non-touching two suiter OR a hand OR a willingness to play 1NT redoubled. * After a 1NT bid, two passes and a double you could play that opener escapes using the same Touching Suit Escapes. In Currified Precision, we keep the option of playing 1NT-X open by using RDBL to show 4 spades, PASS to show 2 or 3 spades. For another escape system, check out our list of escape systems. Reopening by the NT bidder The 1NT bidder should generally be happy if the oppenents have stopped quietly at the two level. The main exception is when opener has a six card minor or 5-4 shape. In this case, a reopening bid should be considered. DOUBLE 5-4 in the minors (2NT asks for longer minor) 2D 5/6 diamonds, natural 2H 4 hearts, 5 card minor (2NT asks for minor) 2S 4 spades, 5 card minor (2NT asks for minor) 2NT (4-4 in the minors, 2 in overcallers suit), NV at matchpoints only 3C 6 clubs 3D 6 diamonds * If they have bid a minor, DOUBLE now shows the majors. 2H is hearts and a minor. 2S is spades and a minor. * The same structure applies after 1NT - 2X - P - 2X (i.e. DOUBLE still 5-4 in the minors, 2S is 4 spades + 5 card minor, etc.), but the 1NT bidder will be more inclined to pass in this auction. * After 1NT - 2C - P - P: 2D 5 diamonds and a 4 card major. DOUBLE 5+ diamonds (w/o a four card major) OR 4-4 in the majors. Responses to 2C 2D Stayman. Could be looking for a four card major or just the start of a forcing sequence. * A new suit (non-jump) is not forcing. * A new suit (jump) is invitational.

* Stayman followed by a new suit is forcing. * When the opponents interfere, a double is Stayman (through 3S). * If your RHO overcalls above 3S, double is penalty. Rebids after 2C - 2D 2H 10-12, 4 hearts 2S 10-12, 4 spades 2NT 10-12, No 4 card major 3C 13-14, No 4 card major 3D 13-14, 4 diamonds 3H 13-14, 4 hearts 3S 13-14, 4 spades * Because of all the room 3H and 3S consume, opener should not stretch to bid them. Responses to 2D 2NT Asks opener to bid the suit below his short suit: 3C Short diamonds 3D Short hearts 3H Short spades 3S Short clubs * Responder can then bid the short suit to ask opener for controls (1st step = 0-2, 2nd step = 3, 3rd step = 4, etc.). * New suit is non forcing asking opener to pass unless that is his short suit, else correct to the next higher suit. * If you are interested in a more exciting 2D opener, Neill and I have played 2D showing 4-3 or 4-4 in the majors and HCP. Responses to 2H (and similarly 2S) 2S To play 2NT Lebensohl (relay to 3C) -- Responder's rebids: PASS To play (3C) 3D (suit below opener's) To play 3H (opener's suit) Invitational in hearts 3S (suit above opener's) Invitational in spades 3NT Asks opener to pass with a 5 card suit or correct with a 6 card suit 3C Ogust -- Responses: 3D Bad Suit, Bad Hand 3H Good Suit, Bad Hand 3S Bad Suit, Good Hand 3NT Good Suit, Good Hand * A good suit has two of the top three honors, a good hand has 7+ HCP. 3D Asks opener if he has a singleton -- Responses:

Rebid major No singleton 3NT Diamond singleton Other suit shows a singleton in that suit 3H Simple raise, non-forcing 3S 5+ cards, game forcing. * Over 2S, 3H promises 5+ cards and is game forcing. * If you are up or down by a large number at halftime, we suggest a spicy alternative, the Fighting Irish 2 Bids. Responses to 2NT 3C Stayman (not Puppet) 3D/3H Jacoby Transfers 3S Minor Suit Stayman 4H To Play (not Texas) Slam Bidding * 4C is Gerber over NT. * 4C is Modified RKC Gerber after any preempt not in clubs. Responses: 4D 0 key cards 4H 1 key card w/o queen 4S 1 key card w/ queen 4N 2 key cards w/o queen 5C 2 key cards w/ queen * The cheapest bid after a NAMYATS 4C/4D opening is a RKC (0314). There is no queen ask. * No other RKC bids exist in the system. * 4NT is Blackwood, not RKC. A 5NT continuation asks for number of kings. * 5NT is GSF. Bid 7 of suit with 2 of the top 3. Responses if spades are trump: 6S 0 of the top 3 6H Queen 6D King 6C Ace Responses if hearts are trump: 6H 0 of the top 3 6D Queen 6C King or Ace Responses if diamonds are trump: 6D 0 of the top 3 6C 1 of the top 3 Responses if clubs are trump: 6C 0 or 1 of the top 3

BIDDING AFTER THEY'VE OPENED Buggerized Overcalls/Preempts * Overcalls at the one level are natural, 8-17 HCP. * Overcalling 2H over 1S generally shows a good suit and 12+ HCP. * An overcall of 1NT shows 5 of the bottom suit, 4 of the top. * Overcalls of 2C or 2D show that suit, the next highest unbid suit and at least 4-4 in the two suits. * A jump overcall of 2D shows 5 diamonds and 4 hearts. * A jump overcall of 3C/3D is intermediate (about HCP). * Simple Overcalls of 1NT, 2C, 2D and the jump overcall of 2D generally show less than 13 HCP. * A jump overcall of 2H/2S is natural and preemptive. * Other preempts not described above are standard and moderately aggressive. Bidding over 1NT Hamilton vs. Weak NT (Direct & Balance) DBL Penalty Oriented (15+) 2C One Suited Hand 2D Hearts & Spades 2H Hearts & Minor 2S Spades & Minor Best Defense vs. Strong NT (Direct & Balance) DBL Spades & Another 2C Clubs & Hearts 2D Diamonds & Hearts 2H Hearts 2S Spades NOTE: There is an easy way to figure out if the NT is strong or weak. If the 1NT could contain 13 or less, it is weak (i.e , 13-16). If not, it is strong (i.e , 15-17). Sandwich NT When the opponents have bid 1 of a suit, 1 of a suit (partner passing), DOUBLE shows at least 4-4 in the other two suits and an opening hand. 1NT shows the same shape, but less than an opener. When the person in the "sandwich seat" has passed, that person is unlikely to want to overcall 2C since they didn't open 2C. Also, the distinction about points isn't useful if partner has passed. Therefore: DOUBLE Equal length in both suits 1NT Longer length in the lower suit 2C Longer length in the higher suit Other Conventions

* Suction vs. a forcing club (but standard methods over a 2C opener) * Lebensohl over Weak 2s * Michaels (NV 4-4 or better, V 5-5 or better). In response to 1C - 2C - P: 2D (by the partner of the Michaels bidder) suggests playing in 2D. * Negative Free Bids 2C --> 3D * Negative Doubles --> 4D (after an opener of 1D, 1H, 1S or 2C) * Responsive Doubles --> 4D * Support Doubles --> 2H * Support Redoubles --> 1S * Maximal Doubles 3D or 3H (only applies when our suit is directly above theirs) * After 1D - 1H overcall - 1S shows 5 and DOUBLE shows 4 although opener's rebids do not change with the knowledge that 1S shows 5 (i.e. 1D - 1H - 1S - 2H - 2S still promises 4 spades). * After 1D - P - 1H - 1S - 1N is 3 trump w/ a stopper, DBL is 3 trump w/o a stopper. Leads and Carding * A from AKx, K from AK tight * Fourth best vs. suits and NT * Leads from xxx: MUD vs. suits and NT (top if leading partner's suit), low from honor (Txx or better) * Second highest from xxxx (9xxx or worse) * Standard count, attitude and suit preference * Attitude is first priority when partner leads a suit. * Count is given when oppenents lead suit AND it seems partner may need the count. * Suit preference is given when attitude and count have been given (or are already clear).
