1 Earn Your Black Belt in Reading! Phrases Fry s First 100 Words List By Edd Ohlsen

3 To use: There are a few options included in this packet. The first option is to put all phrase cards into a pile. Have students read the phrase. If they can read the phrase fluently with no miscues, they may keep the card. If not, you can correct them and then place this card back into the pile. At the end of game, count up how many words are in each phrase card earned and then use the chart below to award a belt to their pencil. The belt is simply a piece of yarn/ribbon that is tied onto t he student s pencil as karate belt

4 To use: The second option is to use all word cards and ignore the phrase cards. Have students read the card. If they can read the card, then they may keep the card. If not, you can correct them and then place this card back into the pile. At the end of game, count up how many cards the student has earned and then use the chart below to award a belt to their pencil

5 To use: A different way to play: You could place all phrase cards in a pile and mix in the karate chop cards in. If a student can read the card, they may keep it, if not they may give it back. If a karate chop is pulled, all of their cards go back into the pile. A fourth way to play/ You can use either the phrase cards or the word cards and shuffle them up. Have students read the card and then roll a die to determine how many spaces they may move on the game board. You can print out the regular word cards and use them as flash cards or send home with students to reinforce learning from the classroom. These cards can also be used for memory match as well if you choose to print out a duplicate set. A sheet has been included to record student growth and determine areas of instruction. Finally, there is a certificate for use to send home with students announcing what color pencil belt they have earned if you so choose. Feel free to modify for your class. Enjoy--Edd
