Wanting their seven children to have gifts to open on Christmas morning, they took $20 and shopped diligently at the thrift store, finding seven small items to place under a tiny tree they d found in a field. Feeling desperate about all their other needs and guilty for praying for presents, the couple asked God to bless their kids. On Christmas Eve, a couple they barely knew, friends of friends from church, called and asked to stop by. They pulled up in a 15-passenger van and asked if Bryon and Ruthie s kids could help carry in a couple of things. In fact, the rear seats had been removed and the vehicle was filled with packages and groceries. The next morning, the family unwrapped goodies both practical and fun. We felt as if the Lord was saying, This is my heart toward you. I want to bless you, Bryon writes. It is the Lord s heart to bless his children. Bringing Christmas outdoors The first colored electric Christmas lights on outdoor evergreen trees appeared in Denver in The tradition began thanks to a sick boy bedridden in the top floor of his home. Ten-year-old David Sturgeon couldn t see his family s Christmas tree downstairs, so his grandfather, a pioneering electrician, painted some light bulbs red and green and strung them on a tree outside David s window. Not only did the lights brighten what would be David s last holiday, but residents throughout the city came by to admire the display. Just as David s innovative grandfather brought light into the boy s dark times and joy to the whole community, God revealed the true light by sending Jesus into our dark world. For the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it (John 1:5, NRSV).

(5JhristmCfI Make your preparations 'Advent'-urous Advent - the first season of the liturgical year - includes the four Sundays and weeks prior to December 25. Advent dates from the fourth century, when it lasted 40 days and included fasting and solemnity, much like Lent. Advent is from Adventus, Latin for "coming," referring to Jesus ' birth in Bethlehem and also his second coming. The traditional colors of Advent are purple for penitence or blue for hope. Observing Advent is a meaningful, adventurous way to prepare for Christmas. Buy or make an Advent wreath and use candles of your choice: four blue, four purple, or three blue or purple and one pink. If you have a fifth spot, add one white Christ candle. During meals or devotions, light only one candle the first week. Add another for each new week (the pink candle traditionally marks the third week), concluding with the white candle (if you have one) on Christmas. The increasing light reminds us we're getting closer to celebrating Christ's light coming into the world.
