1 2 Writing e date 2 Writing e date In is activity, e UK numerical format for dates is used raer an e American at is, 2 January 2007 is expressed as 2/1/2007, raer an 1/2/2007. This session is designed to enable learners to: read and write e date in a variety of formats; use a calendar to find e day of e week for a given date. A selection of materials wi dates, for example magazines, newspapers, tickets, receipts, letters, s, flyers, sell-by dates, use-by dates, and so on. Learners may be able to provide some of ese. Large calendar for 2007, or oer appropriate year (optional) or Sheet 1 Calendar 2007 for each learner. For each learner you will need: A list of bir dates (day and mon only in numerical format, for example 21/04) of historical or popular characters (e same number of characters as ere are learners in e group). A sheet wi e same characters wi name and bir dates (in day and mon form, for example The Queen 21 st April ) to be cut up into individual cards. Each learner has one card. Mini-whiteboard, marker and clo (optional). This activity assumes at e current year is It can be adapted for oer years.

2 For each pair or small group of learners you will need: Card set A Dates in different formats; Card set B Dates and events (you may wish to create your own version); Sheet 2 True or false?

3 Ask learners to write today s date in as many different formats as ey can ink of. They could use mini-whiteboards. Write all e different answers on e board. To find oer formats at may have been missed, learners could: look at e options in e Insert date instruction in a word-processing application on computer (if available); study a selection of magazines, newspapers, tickets, receipts, letters, s, flyers, sell-by dates, use-by dates, and so on. Add any additional formats to e list on e board and discuss and compare all e formats. Ask learners to work in pairs. Give each pair of learners Card set A Dates in different formats. Ask pairs to hold up cards in response to questions such as: Show all e cards wi dates in March. Show two cards wi dates in e same mon (oer an March). Show all e cards at have dates in Show e cards at show a date in e fif mon of e year. Show pairs of cards at show dates in e same year. Ask learners to explain eir selections. Collect all e sets of Card set A and redistribute just one set among e pairs of learners, making sure at each pair gets a range of different formats. You may wish to add to ese from e selection of magazines, and so on, at you used earlier, or possibly use em instead of e cards. If ere is a large number of learners, you may need to introduce more cards of your own, but make sure you do not have any duplicate dates. Ask each pair of learners to arrange eir cards (and oer materials) in date order. Then ask em to combine eir cards wi ose of anoer pair to make a longer chain in correct date order. Ask learners to continue combining eir cards and chains until all e cards and oer materials are in date order. Discuss any difficulties.

4 Give each learner a card wi e name and bir date (in day and mon format) of one of e characters, and e list of bir dates of all e characters in numerical format. Ask learners to go round e group asking each oer who ey are and when eir birday is. For example Learner A asks Who are you? wi response from learner B I am e Queen and my birday is on e 21 st of April. Learner A en finds at date on eir list and writes e Queen against it. Learners go round e whole group until ey have identified who has each birday on e list. They can en check at ey all have e same list and discuss any differences. Show a large calendar for e current year on e board (or distribute Sheet 1 Calendar 2007 to each learner). Discuss how you would find out which day of e week each birday is on. You may wish to prepare a different Card set B Dates and events at relates to dates and events at are significant for your particular group of learners. Ask learners to work in pairs. Give each pair Card set B Dates and events and Sheet 1 Calendar 2007 if you have not already done so. Ask learners to use Sheet 1 to find e day of e week on which each event on Card set B will fall in When learners have completed e task, ask em to make up some cards of eir own about events at are important to em as individuals and to identify e days on which ey will occur in They could ask oer learners to check eir answers. Discuss e findings wi e whole group and clarify any difficulties.

5 Ask learners to work in pairs using Sheet 1 Calendar Give each pair Sheet 2 True or False? Learners could complete e quiz in pairs and compare eir answers, or e questions can be asked as a whole group quiz wi pairs or teams having to give an answer after discussion in eir team. You could devise as many questions as you wish. Learners could prepare a schedule for planning an event, holiday or similar activity where e plan involves identifying a series of milestones, wi eir dates.
