Ecuador - The Andes & Amazon Tour Leader: Byron Palacios Participants: Laurence Morgan Joan Morgan Dave Branagh Leon Smith John Sargeant Steve Vaughan Joanne Milroy Peter Morris Day 1 Wednesday 5th November London - Quito After a long flight and journey for almost all the fellow participants, we arrived in Quito in the early and late evening and transferred to the comfortable and centrally located Hotel Sebastian. We then had a restful night in order to start this fantastic trip the next morning. Day 2 Thursday 6th November Quito Nono Tandayapa - Mindo We started at 6.00am from Hotel Sebastian and then drove due north to take the Nono Tandayapa old road. The morning was beautiful and we stopped for nearly an hour just before the village of Nono in order to check some good patches of montane and temperate forests along the road, where we had great views of Stripedheaded Brush-Finch, Black-crested Warbler, Sapphire-vented Puffleg, Scarlet-bellied Mountane-tanager, Cinereous Conebill, Glossy Flowerpiercer, Rufous-naped Brush-Finch, Spectacled Whitestart, Plain-tailed Wren, Azara's Spinetail, Blackish Tapaculo, amongst others, whilst the elusive Undulated Antpitta and Ocellated Tapaculo were singing in the background! We continued driving down the stoned-dirt road making two more stops in the area known as La Sierra, where we saw Rufous-chested Tanager (glimpses), a massive flock of Brown-bellied and Blue-and-White Swallows soaring above our heads, Sierran Elaenia, Black Flowerpiercer, Beautiful Jay, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Smokedcoloured Pewee, Rufous-breasted Chat-Tyrant, and more. We kept walking down the road and after some mixed results, we headed into the upper subtropical cloud forest. It was a particularly sunny morning and we only stopped again after we had already taken the second part of the Nono-Mindo old road. By then the clouds were thicker and produced a heavy overcast spell that helped very much with the bird activity. After that we had several stops along the way, birding along the Tandayapa Valley. Later on when, when we were already in our descent to Mindo, heavy rain started around 5.00pm, so we headed to the Sacha Tamia Lodge. After checking in, the early evening looked good and we decided to go out, driving five minutes up the main road in order to see Rufous-bellied Nighthawk at dusk and we did it, wonderful views of this lovely bird as it flew over our heads! 3 Day 3 Friday 7th November Milpe Road Sachatamia area A beautiful morning across Mindo Valley, and the birds started very active right at the lodge gardens. Plenty of colourful Golden-naped, Beryl-spangled, Lemon-rumped, Fawn-breasted, Blue-grey, Flame-faced and Golden Tanagers were flitting on the fruit feeders. A single Strong-billed Woodcreeper was catching dead moths from the previous night on one of the garden s lamp-posts, showing himself off beautifully. A group of Palemandibled Aracari and a pair of Toucan Barbets were feeding on the fresh fig fruit of the surrounded trees, while a Black-winged Saltator was singing away, perched on a Mayflower tree. It was literally an explosion of prebreakfast birdlife. After breakfast, we drove to Milpe where we walked along the road for the first hours and then we had a walk inside the forest along a pleasant trail, where many good flocks of birds such as Choco Warbler, Russet Antshrike, Spotted Woodcreeper, Buff-fronted, Uniform and Scaly-throated Foliage-gleaners, Choco Toucan, Guayaquil and Lineated Woodpeckers, Ornate Flycatcher, Slaty Spinetail, Pacific Hornero, Masked Water- Tyrant, Band-backed Wren, Broad-billed and Rufous Motmot, and Pacific Antwren. We finishing with a visit to Mirador del Rio Blanco where we enjoyed of a great eleven s break while watching fantastic hummingbirds, such as Green Thorntail, Green-crowed Brilliant, White-whiskered Hermit, Greencrowned Woodnymph, Rufous-tailed Hummingbird and Little Woodstar. The tanager feeders where full of Silver-throated, Rufous-throated, Flame-faced, Palm, Blue-grey, White-lined and Golden Tanagers. We also saw Crimson-rumped Toucanet, Red-headed Barbet, Ecuadorian Thrush, Orange-billed Sparrow, Green Honeycreeper, Bay Wren, Black-cheeked Woodpecker, and Black and Turkey Vultures. Then we returned to Sacha Tamia for a late lunch and did some birding in the late afternoon around the lodge where hummingbird feeders were particularly productive and later at dusk we drove down Mindo Valley and had wonderful views of Lyre-tailed Nightjar and Pauraque, followed by an owling walk after dinner, resulting in stunning views of Rufescent (Colombian) Screech Owl and Black-and-White Owl! Day 4 Saturday 8th November Antpitta sanctuary and Bellavista area We had a very early start for our drive back towards Nanegalito and we visited Refugio Paz de las Aves where the Paz brothers (Angel and Rodrigo) took us to look for their tame and elusive antpittas. We firstly enjoyed watching the magical displaying of seven male Cock-of-the-Rock s in their lek first thing in the morning. After this show, we walked the trails having wonderful views of Manuel, the Giant Antpitta who was very co-operative with everyone s cameras. We kept looking for other antpittas and that search took us to check the different trails where an elusive Olivaceous Piha was seen as one of the morning s highlights. We also had Sacled Fruiteaters, Crimson-rumped Toucanet, Black-chinned Mountain-Tanager and many others birds moving actively in large flocks round the forest canopy. We suddenly ended up in a lush creek looking for Willy, a Yellow-breasted Antpitta which was apparently nesting in the area, and also saw a pair of Black Solitaires while crossing the creek several times. After a long time waiting for Willy and about to give up, he finally turned up, giving us wonderful views. 2 Naturetrek November 09

Also, we had wonderful views of the rare Moustached Antpitta and many of the area s hummers such as Velvetpurple Coronet, Purple-bibbed Whitetip, Brown and Collared Incas, Sparkling Violetear, Purple-throated Woodstar, Empress Brilliant, Rufous-tailed Hummingbird, Band-tailed Coronet, Green Violetear, and more! Delighted with our fantastic morning, we went to enjoy a delicious local breakfast cooked by the brother s wives. We came back to Sacha Tamia and went to explore Bellavista area in the afternoon, but unfortunately we were very unlucky with the weather as it was misty and rainy. We planned to stay looking for night birds but the weather did not cooperate, so we returned earlier than we had planned. Day 5 Sunday 9th November Mindo - Quito We had an early start walking along the lodge s trails, where we had Scaled Fruiteater, Strong-billed Woodcreeper, Club-winged Manakin, Tyranine Woodcreeper, Chesnut-crowned Brush-Finch, Tricolored Brush- Finch, White-tailed, Sulphur-bellied and Ashy-headed Tyrannulets, and many more, amongst the calls of Cloudforest Pygmy Owl, Rufous-breasted Antthrush and even Mantled Howler Monkeys. We also visited Milpe area during the late morning where weather conditions were not that good at our arrival. In despite of that, we saw lots of interesting things such as Double-toothed Kite, Rufous and Broad-billed Motmots, Tawny-bellied and White-whiskered Hermits, Red-headed Barbet, Pale-mandibled Aracari, Choco Toucan, Red-face Spinetail, Western Wood-Pewee, Piratic Flycatcher, Masked Water-Tyrant, Cinnamon Becard, Black-crowned Tytira, Golden-winged and Club-winged Manakins, and Choco Warbler. We found a nice comfortable place at the end of the road in order to enjoy our packed lunch. A very elusive Chesnut-backed Antbird was continuously calling away while we were eating, but had been not interested in the playback calls. After lunch, weather began to turn so we headed back to Quito in the mid afternoon arriving at the capital in the early evening. Day 6 Monday 10th November Antisana & Papallacta We had an early morning start for our long drive to the Antisana Reserve in the highlands. It was a very productive visit, and we saw many specialties such as Streak-backed Canastero, Silvery Grebe, Black-faced Ibis (four in flight across the lake), Stout-billed and Bar-winged Cinclodes, Puna Hawk, Black-billed Shrike-Tyrant, Andean Lapwing, Paramo Pipit, hundreds of Caranculated Caracaras, Ecuadorian Hillstar, Plumbeous Sierra- Finch, Brown-backed Chat-Tyrant, and more! Also, we had wonderful views of a beautiful male Paramo (Andean) Fox very close. After a typical and tasty lunch at the old Hacienda Antisana, we drove over the continental divide down to the eastern temperate and elfin forest on the Termas de Papallacta resort. We did some birding on the way despite the weather which was dreadful in the highest point of the road. We decided to give it a go and drove up to the top of the mountains (where aerial towers are located) expecting to see the beautiful partridge-like Rufous-bellied Seedsnipe. Naturetrek November 09 3

On the way up we had wonderful views of Red-backed Bush-Tyrant, Andean Tit-Spinetail, Tawny Antpitta, Ecuadorian Hillstar, Blue-mantled Thornbill, Streak-backed Canastero, Andean Teal, Cinereous Conebill, Paramo Ground-Tyrant and much more! Up on the summit, and at 4,350 metres above the sea level, a heavy mist covered the mountains and the visibility was bad, but we kept trying when suddenly my ears caught Rufousbellied Seedsnipe s calls. Finally, four individuals landed very close to us and down the hill by the first aerial towers, fantastic! After this, we drove back to the main road and finally arrived at the lush Termas de Papallacta hotel, located in the heart of the temperate forest. We enjoyed its relaxing hot spring pools before and after dinner, a true treat after a long day birding over 4,000 metres above the sea level. Day 7 Tuesday 11th November Borja Baeza road and San Isidro After an early breakfast, we went to explore the eastern slopes of the Andes. After a 40 minutes drive on the main road towards Baeza, we arrived at our first birding stop in order to walk along the old Borja-Baeza road, great for birding. The weather was fresh and nice for birds, quite greyish though, as the active Reventador Volcano was fuming in the distance. We saw many good birds such as Yellow-browed Sparrow, Tropical Kingbird, Blue-grey, Palm, Summer, Black-capped, Blue-necked and Flame-faced Tanagers, Chestnut-bellied and Black-and-White Seedeaters, Peruvian Meadowlark, Inca Jay, Russet-backed Oropendola, Southern Lapwing, Vermillion Flycatcher, Olivaceous Siskin, Black Pewee, Blackish Antbird, White-backed Fire-eye, Ruddy Pigeon, Smooth billed Ani, Eastern Wood-Pewee, and Black-billed Thrush. Continuing down the track, we stopped at Quijos river bridge obtaining wonderful views of Torrent Ducks, Torrent Tyrannulet, Black Phoebe, Blue-and-White and Pale-footed Swallows, White-collared Swift, Inca Jay, Streaked Xenops, Olive-striped and Streak-necked Flycatchers, amongst others! Weather became wet by the end of the morning so we decided to carry on heading to San Isidro Lodge where we did a pre-lunch birding at its hummingbirds feeders, seeing Bronzy Inca, Chestnut-breasted Coronet, Long-tailed Sylph, Buff-tailed Coronet, Collared Inca, Tawny-bellied Hermit, Sparkling and Green Violetears, Speckled Hummingbird, Fawn-breasted Brilliant and more. We enjoyed a delicious lunch here which nearly sent us to bed! Instead, we recharged our batteries and went down the Las Caucheras road and had great views of interesting birds such as Rufous-crowened Tody-(Tyrant) Flycatcher, Plain-tailed Wren, Crimson-mantled Woodpecker, Subtropical Cacique, Pale-edge Flycatcher, Montane and Olive-backed Woodcreepers, Sierran Elaenia, Crested Quetzal, Blue-winged Mountain-Tanager, Yellow-vented Woodpecker, Pearl Treerunner, Masked Trogon, Blackbilled Peppershrike, Blackburnian and Canada Warblers, Long-tailed Antbird, Cinnamon Flycatcher, Bluish Flowerpiercer, and much more. In the late afternoon we return to San Isidro to see Chestnut-crowned Antpiita which was attracted using worms at one of the trails. After this, we started heading back to Termas de Papallacta arriving there in the evening. 4 Naturetrek November 09

Day 8 Wednesday 12th November Papallacta Quito We went out very early to do some birding on the elfin temperate forest along Oyacachi road. This area is well protected by the Water Company and it s linked to the beautiful Cayambe-Coca Reserve. The first flocks of birds started crossing the track and moving around the trees rapidly but showing themselves so well, and many species such as Blue-backed Conebill, Pale-naped Brush-Finch, White-banded Tyrannulet, Scarlet-bellied Mountai-Tanager, Black-crested Warbler, Pearl Treerunner and more were well seen! We drove up to the top of the road looking for the very rare Masked Mountain-Tanager which we saw together with other beautiful birds such as Red-crested Cotinga, Glossy Flowerpiercer, Paramo Seedeater, Black-backed Bush-Tanager, Black-chested Mountain-Tanager, White-chinned Thisletail, Tawny Antpitta, Shinning Sunbean, Hooded Mountain-Tanager, and White-throated Tyrannulet, amongst others! We went back to the hotel for our final breakfast and check out. We continued our way down to Guango in order to do some birding in this montane forest area. Many good birds such as Black-capped Hemispingus, White-capped Dipper, Northern Mountain Cacique, Smoke-coloured Pewee, Slaty Brush-Finch, Spectacled Whitestart and Buff-breasted Mountain-Tanager were seen at the lodge entrance. Many hummingbird species were seen here too, such as Chestnut-breasted Coronet, Collared Inca, Mountain Velvetbreast, Tourmaline Sunangel, Tyrian Metaltail, White-bellied Woodstar and the incredible Sword-billed Hummingbird. We continued our journey back to Quito stopping to enjoy our packed lunch in a nice area near the treeline and along the old Papallacta Quito road. Birds like Andean Siskin, Stout-billed and Bar-winged Cinclodes, Paramo Tapaculo, and Tawny Antpitta were seen here. We went to check a Polylepis forest patch looking for the elusive Giant Conebill, and ended up having wonderful views of them and also Tufted Tit-Tyrant, White-throated Tyrannulet, Rufous-naped Brush-Finch, Black-tailed Trainbearer and Black Flowerpiercer. Our last stop was made at the El Chiche river canyon area where we had great sightings of Giant Hummingbird and Purple-collared Woodstar repeatedly feeding on a black cabuyo (Agabe) flower. Southern Yellow Grosbeak, Vermillion Flycatcher, Southern Beardless Tyrannulet and Hooded Siskin were also seen in this area. We continued our way to Quito arriving there in the early evening and went to enjoy our dinner in one of the local Ecuadorian food restaurants nearby our hotel. Day 9 Thursday 13th November Quito Sacha Lodge We had a mid-morning flight to Puerto Francisco de Orellana Coca where we had lunch. Then we boarded motorised dug-out canoes to go downstream on the Napo River to Sacha Lodge. The weather was good but quite hot for some of us, especially having spent the previous days in the highlands. The birding was good down the river and birds such as Pied Lapwing, White-banded Swallow, White Egret, Swallow-winged Puffbird, Yellow-headed Caracara, Turkey, Black and Greater Yellow-headed Vultures, Swallow-tailed Kite, Black Caracara and Osprey were seen. We had wonderful views of a roosting Great Potoo perched on a tree snag well known by our local guide Oscar. Naturetrek November 09 5

After two hours in the boat, we arrived at the lodge s warehouse area where a family of Pygmy Marmosets welcomed us in one of the surrounding trees, and we had great views of this peculiar neotropical monkey. Birds like Scarlet-crowed and Guilded barbets, Smooth-billed Ani, Yellow-rumped Cacique, Chesnut-eared Aracari, Purple Honeycreeper, White-chiined Jacamar, Amazonian White-tailed Trogon, Yellow-tufted Woodpecker, Violaceous Jay, Crested Oropendola, Greater and Lesser Kiskadees, amongst others were seen here. We walked towards the black water lake where our paddling boat awaited us. We jumped on it and headed to the lodge crossing across the lake where the first Anhingas and Hoatzins were constantly moving the foliage of the lake edges. Magpie Tanagers and red-capped Cardinals were sat on the dead vegetation near the shores while White-throated Toucans were calling away from a tall palm tree just in front of us! At our arrival, we were welcomed with a refreshing cocktail and were all distributed to our cabins. Dinner was superb and we enjoyed a lot our first night in the jungle! Day 10 Friday 14th November Sacha Lodge A few people decided on an early start and birded in the morning while heading back to the Napo River, while the rest joined us to jump in the boat on time. We all headed together back to Puerto Francisco de Orellana Coca city ; most of the group eventually getting back to Quito close to 5.00pm; I had to wait for a later flight and joined the group in time for supper. With three full days at Sacha Lodge we have time to bird all the best areas. The star attraction is the 500 ft. (300 m.) long canopy walkway. Built of metal and supported by three towers, it is sturdy and moves very little. From our high perch we can look down on gangs of araçaris, a multitude of oropendolas, flocks of brilliant tanagers, and plenty of other canopy species. We had the chance to visit the clay licks downriver which attract a legion of parrots, as well as a nearby trail that goes through excellent forest hosting a variety of antbirds such as Whiteshouldered, Fasciated, Plain-winged, Spot-winged and Dusky-throated Antshrikes, Warbling, Black-faced, Scalebacked, Spot-backed and Dot-backed Antbirds, Short-billed, Plain-throated, Dot-winged and Long-winged Antwrens, and superb views of Noble and Black-faced Anttrushes, very elusive birds. Walking boardwalks and canoeing beautiful channels allowed us to experience the flooded várzea forest, home to some of the rarest and most-wanted species in the area such as Silvered Antbird, Brown, Purplish and Whitechinned Jacamars, Chestnut Woodpecker, Lemon-throated, Scarlet-crowned and Guilded Barbets, Rufous-tailed Flatbill, White-tailed trogon, Little Cuckoo, Common Potto, Cinnamon Attila, Blue-crowned Motmot, Wiretailed Manakins (beautiful views in one of the trails behind the lodge), and many other birds! The night birding around the lodge was superb. Crested, Black-banded, and Spectacled Owls were frequently heard, and Oscar often knew roosting places for them. We went out one of the late afternoons just before dusk and saw two beautiful Tawny-bellied Screech-Owls perched and ready to go hunting, it was superb! In the mornings we would hike up the ridge trail around the lodge where unexpected troops of Common Woolly Monkeys passed through the canopy right over our heads. These monkeys, related to Spider Monkeys, are not often seen in Ecuador and these particular individuals were obviously not accustomed to interaction with humans. 6 Naturetrek November 09

Other monkey species such as Black-mantled Tamarin, Squirrel Monkey, White-fronted Capuchin Monkey, Dusky Titi Monkey and Red Howler Monkeys were also seen here. A few notable additions included Plainthroated Antwren, Black-tailed Leaftosser, and the magnificent Wire-tailed Manakin. We spent the last hour of the afternoon birding from the canopy walkway; activity was not great, but we picked up Spix s Guan. As dusk fell at the old Kapok wooden towers, we heard a pair of Black-banded Owls calling away, and after 35 minutes of searching, we finally managed to see them very well! We did visit one of the most complex habitats within the Amazon Basin: the river islands. These islands are isolated from the terra firma forest and are the perfect home for many species, including some specialized bird species may only found on these island such as the Gray-breasted Crake, White-tipped Dove, Dark-billed and Little Cuckoos, Olive-spotted Hummingbird, Lesser Hornero, Spinetails (Dark-breasted, Plain-crowned, Whitebellied and Parker's), Barred and Castelnau's Antshrikes, Black-and-white Antbird, Small-billed and Large Elaenias, River Tyrannulet, Lesser Wagtail-Tyrant, and the Orange-headed Tanager. These islands and the river allowed us the opportunity to see other island birds such as Yellow-headed Caracara, Collared Plover, Largebilled Tern, Yellow-billed Tern, Sand-colored Nighthawk, Little Woodpecker, Amazon Umbrella Bird, the Ladder-tailed Nightjar, Lesson's and Chestnut-bellied Seedeaters, kingfishers, egrets and herons, Lesser and Greater Yellowlegs, lapwings, many parrots, oropendolas, caciques, Giant and Shiny Cowbirds and the Oriole Blackbird! Day 11 Saturday 15th November Sacha Lodge Coca - Quito We decided to give the parrot lick another go as the weather did not allow us to visit this important spot in previous days. We went to the main blind nearest the Napo River, which is typically visited by hundreds of individuals of Mealy Parrot, Yellow-crowned Parrot, Orange-winged Parrot, Blue-headed Parrot, Dusky-headed Parakeet, and occasional White-eyed and Cobalt-winged Parakeets. We managed to stay enough time to get great views of these birds and to take some good photos of them too. We jumped in our boat, and headed to El Coca in order to catch our flight and return to Quito, where part of the group relaxed for the remainder of the day. Meanwhile, the rest went for an afternoon city tour in Quito s Colonial downtown district. We finished the day having a delicious supper at one of the most beautiful sites of the city, El Panecillo, were a gigantic Virgin statue is sited on a high hill, overlooking the entire city! Day 12 Sunday 16th November Yanacocha Another early morning, and although we were again a bit unlucky with the weather, we were very positive and still full of energy. We drove straight to Yancocha Reserve located just 1 hour away from our hotel in Quito. We started our walk on the flat 2-mile trail which was very misty already but the temperature was still pleasant. The first flocks came along with very interesting birds such as Bar-bellied Woodpecker, Scarlet-bellied and Blackchested Mountain-Tanagers, White-throated Tyrannulet, White-browed Spinetail, Rufous Wren, Rufous Antpitta, Barred Fruiteater, Superciliaried Hemispingus, Blue-Backed Conebill, Shining Sunbeam, Rainbow- Bearded Thornbill, Blackish Tapaculo, Andean Guan, White-banded Tyrannulet, Smoky Bush-Tyrant, Brown- Naturetrek November 09 7

backed Chat-Tyrant, Masked, Black and Glossy Flowerpierces, Streaked Tuftedcheek, Rufous-naped Brush- Finch, Pearl Treerunner, Turquoise Jay, Crowned Chat-Tyrant, amongst others. The hummingbirds feeding stations provided a very good amount of species such as Sapphire-vented Puffleg, Great Sapphirewing, Tyrian Metaltail, Mountain Velvetbreast, Shining Sunbeam, Buff-winged Starfrontlet, Golden-breated Puffleg, Collared Inca, the rare endemic and endangered Black-breasted Puffleg, Gorgeted Sunanagel and the outstanding Sword-billed Hummingbird. Down the trail, we arrived at the last hummingbird feeder station where we had plenty of time to take some photos and see more of these beautiful birds, and also see other feeder s visitors such as Glossy and Masked Flowerpiercers. We walked back to the car park around midday to have our packed lunch and to start our drive back to Quito. Half way down the metalled road, a Curve-billed Tinamou walking right in front of our vehicle which was the great finale of the tour. We saw it very well while it meandered in circles very close to us! We returned to Quito and (for those not doing extensions afterwards) headed towards the airport in order to catch our international flights.
