Ecuador: The Andes Introtour February 2010 Trip Report Pictures and report by tour leader Andres Vasquez Tanager Finch Introduction The Andes Introtour has always been the perfect trip to get hooked to Ecuadorian birds for people who have not been in the country before. This particular trip, with all the variety of birds seen and habitats visited certainly will make several of the participants come back to visit other areas of Ecuador in search for more. There was a bit of rain as can always be expected in the cloudforest, but we managed to get the expected birds plus many species we don t usually see, like nesting Black-throated Trogon and Blue-whiskered Tanager, the rare Pacific Tuftedcheek and Brown Wood-Rail, the display flights of Purple-collared Woodstar plus twice we almost trod on a pair of Tanager Finches that tamely crossed the path we were walking on. 22 February Today was just the arrival day as most people came in pretty late. We spent the night in the Hotel Sebastian, a 4-star hotel in Quito s tourist district. Tropical Birding 1
23 February We started early leaving the city before dawn towards the highland reserve of Yanacocha, which was the highest birding spot of the trip. The grassy fields before reaching the reserve were really good to us as the very first bird of the trip was the difficult Grassland Yellow-Finch and the second a Paramo Pipit, both in the same spot. Still on the way, a second roadside stop brought us a nice Buffbreasted Mountain-Tanager and many others that kept us there for over an hour. We ended arriving somehow late to the reserve but still we got nice birds like the very cooperative Barred Fruiteater pictured here, Smoky Bush-Tyrant and some favorites of much of the group, Scarlet-bellied Mountain-Tanager and Sword-billed Hummingbird. Later on we moved down hill through the old Nono-Tandayapa Road where the best birds were a White-capped Dipper jumping from rock to rock on the Alambí river and a male Andean Cock-of-the-Rock flashing its bright red plumage while feeding exposed on a tree. The last stop was in Tandayapa village, where we got many new birds including the not often seen western race of Russet-backed Oropendola, which is so different from the eastern race that I would not be surprised if this species gets split some day. We ended the day with the super busy hummingbird feeders of Tandayapa Lodge where we spent the next five nights. In just a few minutes of watching the feeders we got 13 hummers including an unusually low Gorgeted Sunangel. 24 February Today we birded subtropical cloudforest, but before dawn we stopped at a spot where Lyre-tailed Nightjar is regular; we got great flight views of the male. Once in the forest, Toucan Barbets (photo left) were the first birds we saw, and immediately we spotted an exquisite Pacific Tuftedcheek. Later on, birding the road, we got repeated views of Glistening-green and Mossbacked Tanagers, and distant views of Black-chinned Mountain-Tanagers. While having lunch I heard an Orange-breasted Fruiteater calling from the bushes behind us. I called it but it only gave us fast flying views. After lunch we headed back to the lodge, where we got to take some pictures of a couple of Powerful Woodpeckers that were nesting in a tree just behind the lodge. We spend the last hours of light birding the trails and at a viewpoint we got good views of a female Andean Cock-of-the-rock feeding in a Cecropia tree. Tropical Birding 2
25 February Leaving again before dawn we arrived at Milpe Bird Sanctuary just after dawn. We were watching some birds at the parking lot when the song of a Yellow-collared Chlorophonia made us move to the trails where we got this great endemic. Deeper inside the trails we tried for a Barred Forest-Falcon that was calling but the bird never showed up. What we did see ok was a male Chestnut-backed Antbird which is not commonly seen at Milpe but more regular lower down. We afterwards moved towards the lek of the cute Club-winged Manakin and we saw a few males doing their super-fast wing-beating display, which we enjoyed for several minutes. Birding the steeper portions of the trail we got various birds like the rare Western Woodhaunter, Rufous-rumped Antwren (great views), Rufousthroated Tanager, Rufous-breasted Antthrush (not so great views) and Tawny-breasted Flycatcher among others. The hummingbird feeders were active and we got nice birds like the Green Thorntail and others. Late in the morning we started birding the Milpe road in search of some birds of more open terrain. Soon we got three soaring Barred Hawks which I called to see them better as they were considerably far; they came close and we had superb views. Some other things we saw before having lunch were Band-backed Wrens, Flamefaced Tanagers, Olive-sided Flycatcher, and Masked Water-Tyrants. After a nice packed lunch we explored the road a bit more trying for some toucans and woodpeckers but a sudden really heavy rainstorm rushed us back to the bus and as it seemed long-lasting, we headed back to the lodge. Some of the participants stayed around the lodge to rest a bit and they got some good species like Torrent Tyrannulet and Red-headed Barbet. 26 February We started the day visiting our blind behind the lodge where the past weeks the workers have been placing some worms to attract Scaled Antpittas; we got amazing views of a couple for over eight minutes. Afterwards we moved up the road to the Tandayapa Valley pass. The first thing to do up there was check on a spot where we regularly find Tanager Finches but no luck. I was frustrated at the time but later on, while birding a good-sized flock, two Tanager Finches literally walked in front of us, we even got some good pics. The sound of a Plate-billed Mountain-Toucan made us walk fast forward to reach the place where the toucan was calling from; we found a group of six Tropical Birding 3
individuals. Another flock brought us nice things like the Chocó endemic Dusky Bush- Tanager, Striped Treehunter, Grass-green Tanagers and again the Tanager Finches showed up tamely. After lunch in the lodge I spent some time demonstrating how to make a hummer perch on our fingers, just for fun. One member of the group decided to walk the trails of the Tandayapa Lodge and saw a nice Red-brocket Deer just few feet away. The afternoon was a bit quiet, and then the rain started, so we returned to the lodge to watch the hummers. 27 February We had an early breakfast at 4:45am because I wanted to go owling before driving to Silanche Bird Sanctuary. In a spot near the lodge we saw a nice Mottled Owl that flew in and perched really nicely. After an hour and a half of driving, we started our day s list with some brief views of the rare Brown Wood-Rail. We birded the dirt road before getting to the reserve and we saw some nice things like the Tumbesian endemic Pacific Parrotlet. Once in the reserve we moved directly to the top of the canopy tower. A nice Dusky Pigeon was waiting for us on an exposed tree just next to the tower and a group of the scarce Chocó endemic Rose-faced Parrot was in a far tree. A steady drizzle made us drop down a level to a sheltered lower level of the tower. It seemed like the rain would never stop, but after waiting for around 20 minutes, all of the sudden a huge mixed species flock crossed in front of our eyes. I didn t even have time to finish calling the name of one bird when another was spotted. It was a frenetic time for us as we needed to walk up and down the stairs to get the birds that were moving in all heights of the forest. We felt even exhausted after about 40 minutes when the activity ended. Some highlights included Checker-throated and Dot-winged Antwrens, Orange-fronted Barbet, Slate-throated Gnatcatcher, Slaty-capped Shrike-Vireo, Choco Trogon, Rufous-winged and Gray-andgold Tanagers, Black-headed Tody-Flycatcher, Yellow-margined Flatbill, and Slatecolored Grosbeak, among many others. The rain stopped after a while and the flock vanished as fast as it showed up so we went back to the bus to have lunch. We did not have a peaceful lunch because some birds started moving around like a cooperative Double-toothed Kite, Scalecrested Pygmy-Tyrant and Purple-throated Fruitcrow. After lunch, we moved along the trails and found nests of Black-throated and Western White-tailed Trogons (see photos on this page) as well as the nest of Bluewhiskered Tanager. A pair of Cinnamon Woodpeckers moved through the canopy so we got only brief views while they moved from tree to tree. On the way back, as if we were short of bird nests, we found a pair of Lineated Woodpeckers building theirs on a tree hole just beside the road. Returning to the lodge I decided to stop again in Milpe for a little while. We got a Collared Aracari, the subspecies that Ridgley and Greenfield consider to be the Tropical Birding 4
endemic species Pale-mandibled Aracari. It was a great day! 28 February For the last full day of the trip, the itinerary had us the visiting the now famous site Refugio Paz de las Aves and its wonderful specialties. We started by visiting the Andean Cock-of-the-rock lek where we got better views than before. Afterwards, moving through the steep trails we visited the fruit feeders that Angel Paz, the owner of the reserve, placed to attract some birds. There we got pictures of fantastic birds like Toucan Barbets and this Crimson-rumped Toucanet. The most wanted birds were still to come and they were basically waiting for us on the trails. Soon we saw the most famous individual of any bird of the country and maybe the world: Maria, the friendly Giant Antpitta that made Angel Paz and his reserve famous around the world of birding; as always Maria posed for pictures. Further down we got with unusual ease the Choco endemic Yellow-breasted Antpitta named Willy (photo below) which cooperated nicely. Moving up the hill Angel spotted a nice male Orange-breasted Fruiteater, the attractive Yellow-faced Grassquit, and on the feeders atop of the hill we got the super elegant Empress Brillant. We went back to the lodge for lunch before heading back to Quito. On the way we did one last stop at Calacalí where the dry inter-andean scrub holds some special birds. Birding was difficult thanks to low cloud, and a very active American Kestrel that made the birds be shy. A Rusty Flowerpiercer was calling close by but the kestrel scared it away. Despite that, we managed to find two special birds, the rare and local White-tailed Shrike-Tyrant that flew conspicuously in front of us and a male Purple-collared Woodstar which was doing display flights in vertical circular movements of several meters of diameter. That was the very last new bird we saw and the perfect end for the trip. We drove back to Quito for one last night, before the trip finished on the morning of 1 March. Tropical Birding 5
