10 Cardueline Finches (1) Fringillidae (1) Yellow-bellied Siskin Carduelis xanthogastra FC Notes: Reserva Las Gralarias is located in the province of Pichincha, near Mindo, Ecuador, considered one of the most diverse bird areas in the world. Covering 1065 acres, or 425 hectares, the Reserve lies between meters elevation and encompasses seven important watersheds. Plans are to continue to expand the Reserve in this beautiful area. A total of 283 bird species of 45 families have been observed on the Reserve since its creation in Of these, 33 species (12%) are endemic to the Chocó Biogeographic Region of the Andes West Slope and/or to Ecuador, and 13 species are considered to be at risk (p.65-66, Birds of Ecuador). The goal of the reserve is to purchase and protect high quality habitat for rare, endemic and special species of birds and to ensure a habitat linkage of natural corridors. The reserve encourages conservation-oriented field research, not limited to avian fauna but including all aspects of tropical montane and cloud forest ecology. Individuals interested in volunteering at or donating to the reserve are invited to contact us. Donations are tax-deductible within the U.S.A. via the non-profit 501(c)3 organization Las Gralarias Foundation, Inc.
