1 June 1 September 3, 2018 Family Programs & Activities Creature Feature Meet the creeping, crawling, swimming, climbing creatures of the sanctuary. We'll show live animals that are found on the sanctuary or in the bay and share their survival secrets. Everyone will have a chance to touch critters and artifacts. Small Fries: Nature Adventures for Preschoolers Dip your preschooler s toes into nature with an interactive story, an outdoor adventure, and a fun craft to take home. Fridays, June 29 August 31, 10:30 11:30 AM $8 M/$10 NM for adults and children ages 2 6. Siblings under age 2 are welcome at no charge. Fish Printing Meet live fish and learn how these aquatic creatures are perfectly adapted for life underwater, then paint a fish replica with a beautiful array of colors to create a print on paper or a t -shirt to take home. Paper is provided; bring your own t-shirt. All attendees must be registered and pay program fee. Thursdays, June 28 August 30, 3:30 4:30 PM; No program July 19 or August 9. Tuesdays, July 3 August 28, 3:30 4:30 PM $8 M/$10 NM for all ages. Turtle Prowl Look for diamondback terrapins, a threatened species of salt marsh turtle. During June and July we ll walk along sanctuary trails in search of nesting turtles. In August and September we hope to find or release hatchlings. Wear comfortable walking shoes and be prepared to walk up to 2 miles. Saturdays, June 23 and 30, and September 1, 4:30 6 PM Thursdays, July 5 and August 23, 30; 4:30 6 PM Tuesdays, August 21 and 28, 4:30 6 PM for adults and children age 6 and older. Join authors Corinne Demas and Artemis Roehrig for a funfilled reading of their picture book Do Doodlebugs Doodle? and learn about the wonderful world of insects. staff will also lead an insect-inspired activity following the reading. Books will be available for sale and signing. Wednesday, July 25, 3:30 4:30 PM FREE with sanctuary admission. All ages welcome. Proceeds from book sales benefit Wildlife Sanctuary. Wild Care for Wildlife! Join Stephanie Ellis, Executive Director of Wild Care, Inc. for a special opportunity to learn about wildlife rehabilitation and meet a live, rehabilitated box turtle and screech owl. Wild Care, Inc. is a nonprofit wildlife hospital dedicated to the rescue and release of injured and orphaned wildlife that rehabilitates over 1,200 animals per year. Stephanie will share a closer look at the work Wild Care does, what to do if you find an animal in distress, and tips for how to best live with our wild neighbors. 3 Family Cruises & Explorations Marine Life Cruise Cruise from Sesuit Harbor in Dennis into Cape Cod Bay aboard the Albatross to look for marine creatures. Our naturalists will use a plankton net, scallop drag, and fish pots to bring up fish, crabs, shellfish, and plankton for you to see and touch. This is a very popular family trip! Wednesdays, July 11 August 22, 6 8 PM $42 M/$52 NM for adults, $32 M/$42 NM for ages 4 17 North Beach Join a naturalist for a short boat trip over to North Beach, a remote barrier beach in Chatham where seals are plentiful. We ll comb the beach and the wrackline to see what natural treasures we discover. Be prepared to walk up to 2 miles in soft sand. Fridays, July 13 August 17, 2:30 4:30 PM; No program July 27. $40 M/$50 NM for adults, $30 M/$40 NM for ages 6 17 Special Events for Adults 60 Years of Science at the Sanctuary In celebration of s 60th anniversary, we ll take a look back at the past 60 years of research at the Sanctuary with Science Coordinator Mark Faherty and Sanctuary Director Bob Prescott. From birds to horseshoe crabs to turtles, s research program has grown by leaps and bounds over the past six decades. Saturday, June 9, 3 4:30 PM $5 M/$7 NM Henry Beston and the Outermost House 2018 marks the fortieth anniversary of the loss of Henry Beston s famed Outermost House during the Blizzard of Join Daniel Payne, author of the Beston biography Orion in the Dunes, for a presentation and reading. Afterwards, Sanctuary Director Bob Prescott will discuss the final years of the Outermost House when it was owned by Mass Audubon and local Beston expert Don Wilding will join in for a discussion on Beston s significance to the culture and history of the Outer Cape. Tuesday, July 31, 7 8 PM Free This program is co-sponsored with Cape Cod National Seashore and takes place at Salt Pond Visitor Center located at 50 Nauset Road in Eastham. Cruises and Special Events Special Birding Programs Tern Birding Join an experienced naturalist for an excursion to Mass Audubon s Tern, a 28-acre island in Chatham that is an excellent place to observe migratory and nesting shorebirds. We ll take a short boat shuttle to the island. Sunday, June 17, 3 5 PM Backwoods Birding Explore remote, wooded trails in Cape Cod National Seashore with a naturalist. We ll look and listen for woodland nesting birds such as Ovenbirds, Pine Warblers, and Eastern Towhees. Friday, August 10, 8 10:30 AM $12 M/$14 NM Race Point Hike and Bird Hike across Hatches Harbor to Race Point in Provincetown to search for shorebirds, seabirds, and whales. Be prepared to walk up to four miles, much of which is in soft sand. Friday, August 17, 9 11:30 AM $12 M/$14 NM Birds of the Salt Salt marshes are used by a diversity of birds including bitterns, salt marsh sparrows, and rails. Join a naturalist at Fort Hill in Eastham to look for these elusive species and other, less-secretive marsh birds. Friday, August 24, 10 AM Noon Seabirds and Seals at High Head Hike along a sand road through the dunes to the Atlantic where we ll search for jaegers, shearwaters, and other oceanic birds. We may also have an opportunity to see gray seals resting on a sandbar and swimming. Saturday, September 1, 9 11:30 AM $12 M/$14 NM 3

4 Kayak Trips Kayak Trips Pre-registration required. Register by phone or in person. Please note: Previous (recent) paddling experience and good swimming ability are required of each participant. To ensure the safety of all participants, the kayak trip leader reserves the right to deny participation to paddlers who do not demonstrate adequate paddling ability. All equipment is provided. Directions meeting locations given upon registration. Children ages welcome with an adult. Kayak Trip Explore the winding tidal rivers, quiet bays, and scenic marshes of Cape Cod on a naturalist-led kayak trip. $50 M/$55 NM Great : Paddle the Herring River basin and along the glacial bluffs of Great, a 3-mile barrier beach and island system separating Cape Cod Bay from. Nauset : Explore the winding, tidal creeks of Nauset, the largest salt marsh on the Outer Cape and a great place to view wading and shorebirds, ospreys, and large numbers of seals. Pleasant Bay: Cape Cod s largest embayment, Pleasant Bay includes shorelines in the towns of Orleans, Brewster, Harwich, and Chatham. Along the paddle are a number of eelgrass beds that teem with marine life. Seals, herons, egrets, and shorebirds are also commonly seen. Mondays, July 9 August 20, 6 8 PM $50 M/$55 NM Birding by Kayak in Nauset In the late summer Nauset becomes a hot-spot for viewing large numbers of migratory shorebirds and terns. This kayak trip, led by an experienced birder, will bring you to the best spots in the marsh for viewing shorebirds. The small group size on this trip allows for a more personalized birding experience.
