3 New Staff Spotlight news & notes John Monger Museum Popup Tours Every Saturday at 1 p.m., visit the Museum for guided tours of exhibits, behind-the-scenes views of collections, and a chance to see what staff is working on. Find out what each week's tour will be by checking the Museum's Facebook page. It's always exciting to see new staff members at the Elkhart County Parks. In December, we welcomed John Monger to our Park Operations staff at Ox Bow County Park. John holds a Bachelors of Science degree in anthropology with a minor in natural resources from Ball State University. He has previously worked as an archaeological interpreter and park ranger at other area parks and brings terrific enthusiasm to Elkhart County Parks. When you see John at Ox Bow, be sure to welcome him to the Elkhart County Parks team! Find the Leaf! Several dozen responses later, we're gratified that so many readers spotted the leaf tucked away on the wing of a Sandhill Crane (pg. 9), and stamped on a wine cork (pg. 14). Nice work, leafseekers! Where will the leaf be hiding this time? Send in your sightings to aaguirre@elkhartcounty.com before June 5 for a chance to win some Elkhart County Parks swag. 4 A news & notes Filling in the Pumpkinvine Gaps Piece by piece, the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail has been a work-in-progress for over two decades. Spearheaded by the Friends of the Pumpkinvine, this non-profit group has worked tirelessly to stitch together a walking and biking trail stretching from Goshen to Shipshewana. In 2018, the trail will be one mile closer to completion in a project fondly nicknamed the gap. The project plan includes completing a portion of the trail located southwest of Middlebury presently marked along the roadway, between County Roads 33 and 20. The Friends have partnered with Elkhart County Parks by fundraising and acquiring land for the first portion of the gap closure. The property will be donated to Elkhart County Parks and construction will begin this year. In addition, the Friends of the Pumpkinvine are presently fundraising for the second shorter portion of the gap between County Road 20 and County Road 35. The Community Foundation of Elkhart County, Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Bicentennial Nature Trust, and many corporate and individual sponsors have donated towards these two gap projects. When both portions are complete, the community will have a 16.5-mile contiguous, accessible trail. As portions of the trail have been developed over the years, parcels have been donated by the Friends to public entities including Elkhart County Parks, Goshen City Parks, Town of Middlebury, and Town of Shipshewana. These agencies meet regularly to communicate trail needs, review event applications, and discuss maintenance requirements. The Elkhart County Parks greatly appreciates the hard work of this dedicated group of volunteers. If you would like to donate to the gap project please visit pumpkinvine.org. Volunteer Spotlight In 2014, Elkhart County Parks received a letter from park patron Lynn Bradley, who offered to replace a few broken bluebird boxes at Ox Bow. What began as a donation of five new boxes has turned into an unmeasurable gift to the entire Parks department. Building bird feeders, constructing nesting box kits for bluebird workshops, and creating bat house kits for day camps, Lynn has generously donated his time, talents, and resources to many projects and programs throughout the Parks system. Lynn s latest project involves constructing new nesting boxes to be placed at Boot Lake and the River Preserve County Parks later this spring. Not only does he provide quality designs, but he does so with humor, humility and eagerness that is much appreciated. On behalf of the people and wildlife that benefit from his work in the parks, we would like to thank Lynn for reaching out and sharing his talents with us. [ 4 ] elkhartcountyparks.org

5 parks perspective OF ELKHART This year, the Elkhart County Historical Museum will be sharing the stories of historic locations across the county and what makes our communities unique in the new monthly series Places of Elkhart. Programs will explore built environments and will include interpretation of specific buildings, neighborhoods, farms, and even entire towns and villages. As we explore the Places of Elkhart, select locations will be presented on-site, allowing our audiences to experience history in a much more dynamic way connecting with the very places where their past was built from the ground up. 6 parks perspective Nature s Calendar by Courtney Franke, Interpretive Naturalist MARCH Swelling Silver Maple buds are an obvious sign that seasons are changing. The buds are an important food source for squirrels. APRIL The Lyrid meteor showers will peak April This dazzling celestial display is a result of dust from the comet Thatcher. Listen for the quacking calls of Wood Frogs abundant in vernal woodland ponds. These small, masked frogs hatch from globular clusters underwater that may contain up to 3000 individual eggs! MAY The Eastern Tiger Salamander, our largest terrestrial salamander, is active after months of winter dormancy. They lay egg masses in shallow ponds and wetland areas. JUNE Sightings of Black Rat Snakes become more common this month as they emerge from hibernation. These snakes hibernate in groups and sometimes spend the winter with other snake species. Wild Geraniums are blooming this month and can be found in a variety of habitats. The robust green leaves and relatively large, purple-pink flowers make them attractive and easy to spot. Saturn s proximity to the earth and its opposition to the sun will make it appear brighter and larger than normal. The planet will be in its best position for observation on June 27. Eastern Milk Snakes are laying eggs in June. They will lay 6-20 eggs in piles of loose soil, saw dust, manure or other types of cover and will hatch out after 6-8 weeks. [ 6 ]

8 parks perspective Hoosier Cabinet Holds Unique County History Could you use more kitchen cabinets? Would you like a well-lit pantry? Imagine your kitchen a century ago without all the storage. Enter the Hoosier Cabinet! For centuries, kitchens existed without cupboards as we know them today. Hoosier cabinets provided valuable kitchen storage and made food preparation and cooking more sanitary and efficient. Hoosier Cabinets were first developed in 1899 by the Hoosier Manufacturing Company in New Castle. Other firms soon began producing cabinets, including Coppes Bros. & Zook in Nappanee. Their version, the Napanee Dutch Kitchenet, became nationally famous thanks to efficiency expert Harrington Emerson. Acquiring this Hoosier allows the museum to interpret an important chapter in Elkhart County history. Emerson conducted a government study in efficiency in the early 1920s. He found that, on average, homemakers without a Hoosier cabinet took 2,113 daily steps, but those using the Napanee Dutch Kitchenet took a mere 520. With this report, the Napanee Dutch Kitchenet rose in popularity, and Hoosier Cabinets became trend-setters in homes across the country. In order to help tell this story, the Elkhart County Historical Museum recently acquired a Coppes Bros. Napanee Dutch Kitchenet with the assistance of the LaSalle-Rosseau #441 Indiana Questers. The Questers located a Kitchenet from the early 1920s and made a generous donation toward its purchase. The cabinet will be on display in the museum s Welcome Center in the coming months and will appear in an upcoming timeline exhibit interpreting an important chapter in Elkhart County history. Now, a century later, we all try to count more steps every day, not fewer! [ 8 ]
