Temples and Tigers - The Best of Northern India Tour leader: Dhanya Venkatesh Tour participants: Michele Langfield Gil Langfield Pete Lewis Marjo Lewis Malcolm Beetham Teresa Beetham Debbie Harding Mike Williams Hazel Williams Dianne Petzkow Day 0 Friday 5th Travel from the UK Day 1 Saturday 6th Delhi Warm, sunny afternoon, pleasant evening We arrived at IGI at 9am & most of us checked into Taj Palace Hotel in New Delhi, the Langfields and the Williams met us at the airport. After lunch, a visit was made to the bird rich River Yamuna at Okhla, the top birding site in Delhi. Large numbers and variety of wetland species were found during the afternoon, including some species not seen subsequently such as Greater Flamingo and Brown-headed Gull alongside more familiar fare such as Black-headed Gull, Pallas s Gull and both Babblers and Starlings. Day 2 Sunday 7th Khajuraho Sunny and warm Straight after breakfast, we were on our way to Delhi s domestic airport and a flight to Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh. The flight, via Varanasi, was delayed by half an hour and meant we had a wait at the airport. We disembarked into Central India s small city called Khajuraho at just after 12.10pm. There was time to settle into the very pleasant Jass Trident Hotel and to have some lunch before we drove the short distance to the main temple complex. The rest of the afternoon was spent admiring the spectacular and enigmatic Western & Eastern Temples of Khajuraho with the assistance of a local guide. We also attended the Khajuraho Dance Festival starting at 7pm Naturetrek June 10 1

Day 3 Monday 8th Panna Sunny but pleasant A 35 minute drive took us to the Ken River Lodges on the outskirts of Panna NP. After having had a quick cup of tea/coffee we went exploring the park on our first morning drive. This brought a good selection of birds including, Indian Bushlark, Common Ioras, several Crested Serpent Eagles. We see fresh pug marks of the male Tiger and also hear the tiger trackers mention that he was around but we didn t see him. After lunch we embarked on yet another jeep safari into the National Park. Everyone managed good views of the various common mammals present: Nilgai, Chital and Sambar; and some saw Chinkara, a species everyone would catch up with eventually. Birdlife was also notable with Grey-headed Fish Eagle particularly pleasing but also included several White-eyed Buzzards and Long-billed Pipits amongst others. Day 4 Tuesday 9th Panna Sunny with slight drizzle We gathered in darkness for hot drinks and biscuits in the courtyard of the Ken River Lodges before setting off on a four hour game drive in the park. Our jeeps stayed on the same route as the other jeeps. We heard alarm calls from the Spotted Deer and Langur so one of the jeeps turned around to check with the second jeep following it. One lucky jeep saw a Leopard really close to the road and followed it through the undergrowth until the other two jeeps caught up. We had a lunch break from 11am to 2pm when the park was closed, and went on a boat ride offered at the lodge for the Eurasian Eagle Owl. The undoubted highlight for some was the discovery of a Leopard darting across the road but everyone else enjoyed a varied and bird filled afternoon with a few Wild Boar and the usual deer and antelopes made the drive enjoyable. Day 5 Wednesday 10th Panna Sunny and warm after early mist Today significant cloud had rolled in from the north and the air was moist and cool. Consequently the park looked completely different, being shrouded in mist. Familiar roadside species like Chital and Sambar suddenly took on a more ethereal dimension as they faded in and out of sight in the rolling mist. We gathered for breakfast on a plateau opposite where we had breakfast yesterday but the gorge below us was amazing with all the Griffon and Long Billed Vultures sitting on one of the flat cliff tables, and we had some new birds for the list like the Common Crane along with the Sarus Crane. The afternoon drive produced a Leopardess for half hour for one jeep while the second jeep caught up with the sighting just in time and the third jeep was on the other side of the forest listening to Sambar alarm calls possibly for the Tigress and missed the Leopard sighting. 2 Naturetrek June 10

Day 6 Thursday 11th Panna to Orchha Sunny and warm Our final game drive at Panna started with loud alarm calls however nothing seemed to appear today. We continued to see birds on the drive alongside some Tawny-bellied and Yellow-eyed Babblers. After lunch we said our goodbyes to the staff at the Ken River Lodges and boarded our bus for the six hour drive to Orchha. Rather bumpy roads during the early stages of the journey soon gave way to a better surface and we made good time and had a little daylight left to enjoy the surroundings on our arrival at the lovely Amar Mahal Hotel. Day 7 Thursday 12th Orchha Drizzling with some sunny bits After breakfast we set off on a guided walk of the town and some of its major architectural features. First stop was at the nearby Raj Mahal Palace and then the nearby Jehangir Mahal. We had a brief visit to a nearby temple and then a stroll through the pleasant and authentic seeming town market. Lunch at the hotel was followed by a period of rest and relaxation, though some took the opportunity to go birding near the hotel again. At we set off for nearby Jhansi were we were to catch the Shatabdi Express to Agra. The train was half an hour late but we reached Agra more or less at the right time and we transferred to our hotel for the night. Day 8 Friday 13th Agra Thick fog but Sunny and warm during the day An early start saw us on our way to the Taj Mahal for a sunrise view but the thick fog had masked the Taj Mahal, so there was no way of seeing it. So we spent an hour hoping in vain that the fog would clear. We had a full guided tour inside and around the grounds. We made our way back to the hotel for breakfast and after breakfast we were on our way to the Baby Taj and then Red Fort. We had time for a little shopping before getting back for lunch. Following lunch we set off on the short drive to the spectacular abandoned city of Fatehpur Sikri. After an hour or so we set off again and just before darkness we arrived at the Laxmi Vilas Palace at Bharatpur for a three night stay. Day 9 Saturday 14th Bharatpur Sunny and warm/ hot We started at 9am to Bund Baretha as there isn t much water in Keoladeo Park. It is a long drive to the reservoir but the drive through the rural area added some entertainment for us. We saw many water birds like Pelicans, Cormorants, Geese, Ducks and Warblers. Naturetrek June 10 3

We glimpsed the Blyths Reed Warbler who vanished into a mixed flock of Greenish Warblers, and Grey Headed Canary Flycatchers making it difficult to spot him again. We saw many new birds like Jacanas, Sandpipers and Terns among the commoners alongside Pochards, Wigeon, Gadwall, and many more. We had lunch at the forest rest house listening to the constant chattering of the Fruit Bats or the Indian Flying Foxes. On our way back we stopped to see the celebrations of a local man winning the village elections and later we stopped again to see the vast amount of red chillies being dried. We got back well before dark to the comforts of the hotel after having an enjoyable long day. Day 10 Sunday 15th Bharatpur Sunny and warm/ hot Our second day started at Bharatpur with a walk around the forest nursery which produced a couple of Spotted Owlets and Oriental Honey Buzzards. Our route to the temple today took us through wooded habitat and although the woods were quiet we were rewarded with a Long Eared Hare, Jackals and Grey Mongoose. We saw Spotted Eagles and Thick Knee amongst common species. A few minutes after getting into the park we saw the Dusky Eagle Owl at its nest. It was now time to visit the wetlands - roadside pools had some waterbirds such as storks and egrets, wildfowl, ibis. We also had a cast of eagles overhead Steppe, Crested Serpent Eagle, Marsh Harrier, Greater Spotted and the Indian Spotted Eagle. Moving deeper into the grasslands we were in pursuit of Indian Coursers and soon found a rather large flock of the Yellow Wattled Lapwing, Paddyfield Pipits and the Oriental Skylark which only Malcolm saw. Day 11 Monday 16th Bharatpur/ Delhi or Ranthambore Sunny and warm As most of the group was leaving on the Ranthambore extension this morning it was just Malcolm, Teresa, Marjo and Pete who visited the National Park today but before this we visited the Bharatpur Nursery looking for the Brown Hawk Owl but unfortunately its roosting site had been disturbed by bees. We assembled at breakfast and after having said our goodbyes to those returning to the park, and later to Delhi, the rest of the group caught the Golden Temple Express for the three hour transfer to Sawai Madhopur. The journey passed swiftly and uneventfully and we arrived at Pug Mark Hotel and soon we were setting off on our first game drive at Ranthambore. Rather than the separate jeeps we were used to at Panna, our vehicle at Ranthambore meant that everyone was now together and had a good high vantage point during our drives. A close encounter with a Painted Spurfowl was a particular highlight of this first drive. As we were exiting the park we saw a huge male Leopard in the distance walking away from us. 4 Naturetrek June 10

Day 12 Tuesday 17th Ranthambore Sunny and warm/ hot We were ready by 6am and we started to walk towards the main road and after 45mins the vehicle arrived and we left for our first morning game drive. We were on the route where the tigress was seen last evening so we headed straight to the lake and stayed put, and had a great time birding and seeing a couple of Great Thick-knees plus a nice selection of birds. Suddenly we hear the Sambar sound an alarm so we rushed ahead and see a male Tiger walk across and get onto the grass. We had a late breakfast at our hotel on our return at but before our hrs return to the park we managed to fit in lunch. Back at Ranthambore NP we were in smaller jeeps and on two different routes. One jeep went back to the same area as last evening while the other went on a different route. Similar dry land birds like the Rufous Treepie, Babblers etc were seen; we heard quiet a lot of alarm calls but no predators made it to the list this afternoon. Day 13 Wednesday 18th Ranthambore Sunny and warm/ hot Once again we were on different routes one jeep had the route we had last morning while the other went on a route that was at the base of a huge fort wall. The jeep that was repeating the route saw a male tiger in the grass and minutes later he crossed the road in front of us. We then carried on hoping that the other jeep had similar luck and as there was some festivity at the fort temple the driver suggested that we leave the park early, so we come out of the park an hour early and on our way out saw a Tigress walk up onto the main road towards us and get into her territory. It was amazing to have two tiger sightings in one drive. The other jeep saw some good birds and the magnificent Brown Fish Owl. During our afternoon game drive both the jeeps were on the same route and we went to the plateau. We saw a Booted Eagle among the other common birds and also caught up with Brown Fish Owl two of them; one flew and perched in the distance while the other one was more obliging to being photographed. Day 14 Thursday 19th Ranthambore Sunny and warm/ hot Soon we were once again examining the forest for various clues the tiger would have left for us. We were together and it was repeating the same route for some while for the others it was a new route. The morning was very quiet and the lack of water holes on this route made it all the more dry and silent. No predators were seen. After discussions with our guide and driver it was agreed that we return to the grassland where they assumed the tigress to be, but we did not see her. Since we were at the lake most of the evening we added the Black Ibis and Comb Duck to our list making it add up to 224 species so far. It seemed like the predators had decided to take some rest after having put up a show for us over the last few days. Naturetrek June 10 5

Day 15 Friday 20th Ranthambore/ New Delhi Sunny and warm/ hot It was our final drive before returning to Delhi today and we covered quite a lot of ground. We were on the same road as yesterday but we saw more birds including the Spotted Creeper. We heard loads of alarm calls and so we stayed to see what our luck would holds - there was a predator in the bushes for sure as the Langurs were continuously sounding the alarm but it didn t come out. When we came back, and Dianne decided to go on a camel ride through the village before we checke out from the hotel at 11.45am. The train arrived on time and we were aboard the Golden Temple Express bound for Delhi and by 8pm we reached Nizamuddin. Dianne and Debbie checked into the Ashok Country Resort and prepared for an early departure, while Michele and Gil went on to check in at the Saubhag B&B for an overnight stay. It all seemed to have started just yesterday but time flies so fast that we were soon bidding goodbye to each other.
