1 BIRDING NORTH PERU - AUG to SEPT 2016 Barbet Pre-tour 3 days 21 days from Tarapoto to Chiclayo Extension at Chaparri 3 days Leaders: Detlef & Carol Davies BARBET PRE-TOUR This is an optional pre-tour for people wishing to look for the recently discovered and very range-restricted Scarlet-banded Barbet at a site c.150 kms south of Tarapoto. Unlike the rest of the tours where we use quality lodges and hotels throughout, this involves 2 nights at a basic and remote hostel and the rough journey can take up to 8 hours. However, the birding should be very rewarding. Sat 13 August TARAPOTO Arrive Tarapoto. Transfer by minibus (20 minutes) to Tucan Suites, a quality hotel in Tarapoto. Transfers from the airport at any pre-arranged time. Local birding or sightseeing for anyone arriving in daylight. Baggage not required can be left for transfer to Pumarinri. o/n Tucan Suites, Tarapoto Sun 14 August TARAPOTO to PLATAFORMA Transfer by minibus to Bellavista and then by 4WD vehicle up to the remote village of Plataforma. This is a very rough journey through thick mud and should only be undertaken by guests with a mission to see the very rare Scarlet-banded Barbet. o/n in a basic hostel in Plataforma Possible birds: depends where you stop to look, perhaps Hoatzin, Golden-collared Toucanet, Red-billed Tyrannulet, Subtropical Pygmy Owl, Black Hawk-Eagle, Grey-headed Kite, King Vulture, Orange-breasted Falcon, Slate-crowned Antpitta. Mon 15 August PLATAFORMA for Scarlet-banded Barbet All day birding along the muddy forest trails around Plataforma. o/n in a basic hostel in Plataforma Possible birds: Scarlet-banded Barbet, Lined Antshrike, Yellow-breasted Antwren, Buff-fronted & Rufousrumped Foliage-Gleaners, Ocellated & Strong-billed Woodcreepers, Yungas & Blue-rumped Manakins, Versicoloured Barbet, Pale-eyed Thrush, Golden & Orange-eared Tanagers, Bronze-Green Euphonia, Plain Antvireo, Grey-mantled Wren, Slaty Antwren, Rufous-breasted Ant-Thrush, Wire-crested Thorntail, Booted Racket-tail, Marble-faced Bristle-Tyrant. Tues 16 August PLATAFORMA to PUMARINRI Return from Plataforma down to Bellavista and then to Pumarinri to join those arriving for the main tour. Possible birds: as on journey up, can stop lower down for water birds, e.g Large-billed Tern. MAIN TOUR PUMARINRI Arrive Tarapoto. Transfer by minibus to Pumarinri Amazon Lodge, about a 40 minute journey. Transfers from the airport at any pre-arranged time. Local birding or sightseeing for anyone arriving in daylight.
2 Wed 17 August PUMARINRI trails, boat trip. Pumarinri is set on the slopes of the Huallaga River at c.230 metres altitude, where dry forest and rainforest meet. There are trails from the road or by the river. There is good birding and some amazing poison dart frogs around the Lodge. Boat trip upriver in afternoon and trail on south side of river. Spotlighting by the Lodge in the evening. Possible birds: Yellow-rumped Cacique, Cinnamon-throated Woodcreeper, Black-fronted Nunbird, Yellowbrowed Tody-Flycatcher, Blue-grey, Palm, Turquoise & Paradise Tanagers, honeycreepers, various parrots, White-winged & White-banded Swallows, Drab Water-Tyrant, Black Phoebe, Chestnut-eared Aracari, Greenbacked Trogon, Hoatzin, Ladder-tailed Nightjar, Fasciated Tiger-Heron, Pied Lapwing. Evening: Tropical Screech Owl, Ferruginous Pygmy Owl, Black-banded, Band-bellied & Crested Owls. Thurs 18 August PUMARINRI PUCAYAQUILLO WATERFALL After breakfast drive to the foot of the Waterfall trail, good rainforest birding & opportunity to swim in the waterfall pool. Good for tanagers, antbirds & woodpeckers. Spotlighting around lodge in evening. Possible birds: Peruvian Warbling, Black-faced, Spot-winged and Chestnut-tailed Antbirds, Fiery-capped Manakin, White Hawk, Swallow-tailed Kite, Red-necked & Crimson-crested Woodpeckers, White-browed Purpletuft, White-winged Becard, White-collared Swift, woodcreepers, Fulvous Shrike-tanager, Yellowcrested, Paradise, Turquoise & Opal-crowned Tanagers, Chestnut-eared & Lettered Aracaris. Evening: owls, Pauraque. Fri 19 August QUEBRADA UPAQUIHUA & HUALLAGA RIVER Leave Pumarinri for the day & drive south down main road past roadside wetland, eventually to a little village called Buenos Aires. Head north-west from there up rough road to some good areas of dry forest at Quebrada Upaquihua. Return from Puerto Sangama to Pumarinri by river boat. Possible birds: Wattled Jacana, Green Kingfisher, Black-capped Donacobius, Cobalt-winged & Canarywinged Parakeets, Pearly-vented Tody-Tyrant, Bluish-fronted Jacamar, Great & Barred Antshrikes, Violaceous Jay, White-browed Antbird, Northern Slaty Antshrike, Chestnut Woodpecker, Blue-crowned Trogon, Mishana Tyrannulet, Lafresnaye s Piculet, Ashy-headed Greenlet, Comb Duck, Pied Lapwing, Sandcoloured Nighthawk, Ladder-tailed Nightjar, Brown-crested Flycatcher, Stripe-chested Antwren. Sat 20 August JUAN GUERRA, TARAPOTO Early start, leave Pumarinri with baggage & drive back in direction of Tarapoto, spend morning at the dry forest at Juan Guerra. Late lunch at Tucan Suites, a new 4 star hotel at edge of town, local birding in afternoon or relax, tour the town, etc. o/n Tucan Suites, Tarapoto Possible birds: Troupial, Short-crested Flycatcher, Yellow-tufted Woodpecker, Southern Beardless Tyrannulet, Blue-crowned Motmot, Stripe-necked Tody-Tyrant, Hook-billed Kite, Rufous Casiornis, Chestnutcapped Puffbird, White-browed Antbird, Green Jay, Lettered Aracari, Speckled Chachalaca, Black-throated Mango, Great Antshrike. Sun 21 August THE TUNNEL at CERRO ESCALERA Early morning departure with box lunch north-eastwards from the town to the high forested ridge at Cerro Escalera. We stop beyond the highest point at the 100 metre Tunnel which cuts through the top part of the 900 metre mountain. Visit hummingbird feeders at Aconabikh at km 24 & walk trail there. o/n Tucan Suites, Tarapoto Possible birds: White-tipped Swift, Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, Yellow-crested, Yellow-bellied, White-winged & Dotted Tanagers, Short-billed & Purple Honeycreepers, Blue-naped Chlorophonia, Black-faced Dacnis, Lineated & Red-stained Woodpeckers, Slaty-capped Shrike-Vireo, White Hawk, Blackish Pewee, Duskychested and Cliff Flycatchers, Mishana Tyrannulet, Black Antbird, Channel-billed Toucan, Golden-collared Toucanet, Golden-headed & Blue-crowned Manakins, Koepcke s Hermit, Gould s Jewelfront.

Stop on route at Oilbird roost site under Quiscarrumi Bridge, then to various roadside sites between Moyobamba & Rioja, including a pond for Masked Duck, moriche palms for Point-tailed Palmcreeper & marshes for crakes. Lunch & afternoon birding around Moyomamba. Evening search for Stygian Owl. o/n Hotel Puerto Mirador, Moyobamba Possible birds: Oilbird, White-eyed Parakeet, Russet-backed Oropendola, Chestnut-bellied Seedfinch, Pointtailed Palmcreeper, Black-billed Seedfinch, Masked Duck, Cinereous-breasted Spinetail, Rusty-backed Antwren, Pale-eyed Blackbird, Huallaga Tanager, Paint-billed Crake, Russet-crowned Crake, Blackish Rail, tanagers including Burnished Buff, Little & Spot-breasted Woodpeckers, Stygian Owl. Tues 23 August WAQANKI & MISHQUIYACU Early drive to Waqanki Reserve & walk up Quebrada Mishquiyacu rainforest until noon. Lunch at Waqanki, then up the observation tower to look for at least 15 species of hummingbirds. Some roadside savannah birding. Wed 24 August AGUAS VERDES to ABRA PATRICIA Leave Moyobamba early for birding at Aguas Verdes Reserva Arena Blanca has a feeding station for tinamous and wood-quails, followed by another set of hummer feeders with additional species. Then follow winding road to higher altitude through extensive forest, several roadside stops including more hummers at Venceremos. Arrive Abra Patricia by mid-late afternoon. Evening walk to look for Long-whiskered Owlet. o/n Owlet Lodge, Abra Patricia Possible birds: Cinereous & Little Tinamou, Rufous-breasted Wood-Quail, Orange-billed Sparrow, Zimmer s Antbird, Wire-crested Thorntail, Reddish & Green Hermits, Blue-fronted Lancebill, Tawny-bellied Hermit, Greenish Puffleg, Cinnamon Flycatcher, Great Thrush, various high altitude tanagers & flowerpiercers, some cloud forest hummingbirds, Long-whiskered Owlet, Common Potoo. Thurs 25 August ABRA PATRICIA All day at Abra Patricia (2,300 metres), birding the trails and roadside on foot from the lodge in morning and late afternoon to evening, spotlighting for Cinnamon Screech Owl. o/n Owlet Lodge, Abra Patricia Possible birds: Barred Becard, Lulu s Tody-Tyrant, Yellow-breasted Brush-finch, Pearled Tree-runner, Chestnut, Ochre-fronted, Rusty-tinged & Rusty-breasted Antpittas, Long-tailed Antbird, Chestnut-breasted Wren, Grass-Green, Yellow-scarfed, Flame-faced & Silver-backed Tanagers, Green & Black Fruiteater, Sickle-winged Guan, Striped Treehunter, hummingbirds, tanagers etc as yesterday, Chestnut-crested Cotinga, Cinnamon Screech Owl. Fri 26 August ABRA PATRICIA & evening drive to GOCTA Abra Patricia morning birding, drive to nearby sites for Royal Sunangel & other species. Depart late afternoon & continue west to Pedro Ruiz. Turn south here onto minor road to Cocochimba and to Gocta Lodge. The Falls were revealed to the outside world in 2006 & the Lodge opened a couple of years later. Possible birds: As yesterday, White-faced Nunbird, Red-hooded Tanager, Royal Sunangel, Bar-winged Wood-Wren, Equatorial Greytail, White-capped, Yellow-throated & Vermilion Tanagers.
4 Sat 27 August RIO CHIDO TRAIL & HUEMBO Early morning drive back east to Rio Chido Trail at San Lorenzo for some special rarities including several antpittas. On to Huembo in the afternoon for a variety of hummingbirds including Marvellous Spatuletail. Possible birds: Pale-billed, Rusty-tinged & Rusty-breasted Antpittas, Slaty-backed & Rufous-breasted Chat- Tyrants, Variable Hawk, Rufous-capped Antshrike Smoky Bush-Tyrant, Mountain Velvetbreast, White-capped Tanager, Plain-tailed & Peruvian Wrens, Russet-mantled Soft-tail, Torrent Duck; Marvellous Spatuletail, Chestnut-breasted Coronet, Green & Sparkling Violetears, Bronzy Inca, Green-tailed Trainbearer, Whitebellied & Little Woodstars. Sun 28 August GOCTA FALLS (the low road) The spectacular falls are visible from the lodge. Walk directly from Lodge to foot of Gocta Falls (c.4 hours but birding will make it longer), take box lunch. Evening walk in nearby scrub. Possible birds: Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, Maranon Thrush, Andean Solitaire, Smoky Brown Woodpecker, White-bellied Hummingbird, Golden-bellied Grosbeak, Hooded Siskin, Golden-rumped Euphonia, Russetbacked & Crested Oropendolas, Olive-backed & Montane Woodcreepers, Emerald Toucanet, Blackish Tapaculo, Speckle-chested Piculet, Black-streaked Puffbird, Rufous-winged Tyrannulet, Mitred Parakeet, Buff-bellied, Blue-necked, Beryl-spangled & Flame-faced Tanagers, Sparkling & Green Violetears. Mon 29 August ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE AT KUELAP Leave early for day at Kuelap ruins, an ancient Chachapoyas settlement high above the road, with local guide, some birding. Lunch in nearby village. Possible birds: Band-tailed Pigeon, Mountain Caracara, Streaked Tuftedcheek, Rufous-breasted & Whitebrowed Chat-Tyrant, White-banded Tyrannulet, Black-throated Flowerpiercer, Rufous-naped Brush-Finch, Buff-browed Foliage-Gleaner, Red-crested Cotinga, Sword-billed Hummingbird, Shining Sunbeam, other hummingbirds. Tues 30 August GOCTA to LEYMEBAMBA, UTCUBAMBA RIVER Drive south from Gocta, road rises slowly along Utcubamba River, roadside stops for Torrent Duck & other specialities. Arrive Leymebamba for lunch. Visit Mummies Museum in afternoon. Birding in museum gardens, spotlighting here for Band-winged Nightjar & Koepcke s Screech Owl. Casa Mallqui is within the Museum complex itself. o/n Casa Mallqui, Leymebamba Possible birds: Fasciated Tiger-Heron, Torrent Duck, Spot-throated Hummingbird, Torrent Tyrannulet, Whitecapped Dipper, Sword-billed Hummingbird, Spectacled Redstart, Amazon Kingfisher, Scarlet-fronted & Mitred Parakeets, Hepatic Tanager, Black-necked Woodpecker, Rainbow Starfrontlet, Band-winged Nightjar, Koepcke s Screech Owl. Wed 31 August ABRA BARRO NEGRO & UPPER MARANON VALLEY Day trip to Abra Barro Negro, the high pass rising to 3600 metres, roadside stops for high altitude specialities, then down to Balsas in the hot, dry Maranon valley.
