White-winged Guan Introduction Northern Peru is one of the most special and biodiverse birding destinations on earth. From the Pacific Ocean one can travel east through desert, Tumbesian dry forest, across the western Andes, and through the Marañón and Utcubamba valleys to the humid eastern Andes and edge of the Amazon basin. This tour passes through areas of unique habitats with many endemic bird species and is designed to seek out a good selection of these special endemics that can be found nowhere else. We had a memorable trip, finding some 631 bird species, including 63 hummingbirds and 87 tanagers! Tour Summary Day 1: Chiclayo, coastal birding and Chaparri We took the early flight to Chiclayo from Lima and started birding as we landed. Heading out to the Eten wetlands we soon found ourselves watching a variety of wetland species, migrant waders and enjoying such sought-after birds as the spectacular and aptly-named Many-coloured Rush Tyrant. Some distant Chilean Flamingoes were a good addition. The beach held a variety of waders, while offshore Guanay Cormorants, Peruvian Pelicans, Peruvian Boobies and Grey Gulls reminded us that we were birding the shore of the richest marine ecosystem on earth the Humboldt Current. A single Blue-footed Booby was an indicator that warmer tropical waters are found just slightly further north. The desert habitats here gave us good looks at the endemic Coastal Miner and the peculiar Least Seedsnipe. Yellowish Pipits flew around the scattered wetlands. We then headed inland to the Chaparri Reserve and a late lunch. Here we soon started White-headed Brush Finch by Dave Semler catching up with some of the more common Tumbesian region endemics including Collared Antshrike, Tumbes Sparrow and White-headed Brush Finch. The afternoon walk added the delightful Tumbes Tyrant and critically threatened endemic White-winged Guan this reserve now supports over 25% of the world population! Day 2: Chaparri We started the morning watching four species of hummingbird: Purple-collared Woodstar, Amazilia and

Trip Report - RBT Northern Peru Tumbes Hummingbirds and Peruvian Sheartail, bathing in the stream by the lodge. We then spent the morning birding the trails near Chaparri, chasing up Tumbesian endemic species such as Elegant Crescentchest, Red-masked Parakeet and Sulphur-throated Finch. In the afternoon we then visited the Tinajones reservoir, seeing a good variety of waterbirds and some waders, but a strong wind made birding hard. We nevertheless enjoyed great looks at a pair of Peruvian Thick-knees with their chicks. Day 3: Casupe and Chaparri This morning we headed to higher elevations near the village of Casupe. Here we enjoyed breakfast in the field while watching the localised Porculla Hermit (still considered a subspecies of Greychinned Hermit by some, but gaining increasing, and deserved, acceptance as a valid species). After breakfast we soon found both Three-banded and Grey-and-gold Warblers, and then an obliging Grey-breasted Flycatcher. Higher towards the pass we found several mixed flocks and caught up with the spectacular Black-cowled Saltator and Chapman s Antshrike. Day 4: Bosque de Pomac and Salas Road We started the day heading back to Tinajones reservoir where we caught up with Spotted Rail and very distant looks at Comb Duck. Time was tight as we had to head on to Bosque de Pomac before it got too hot. We arrived at Pomac and started checking traditional areas for our main target species: Peruvian Plantcutter. We soon heard one but getting closer, we instead found that we had heard another birding group playing a recording! We persevered and tried another area. As we birded we found several endemic Rufous Flycatchers the most distinctive of the Myiarchus genus and a rare species that continues to suffer from habitat loss and persecution for catching bees. We also found a nice male Peruvian Sheartail but no sight or sound of the Plantcutter. We then headed to another part of the reserve and, as we drove there, spotted a female from the vehicle; getting out we soon found a pair and enjoyed great looks at both sexes feeding as well as calling. Great relief all round! Mission accomplished, we decided to check out one of the adobe pyramids that are found in this protected area. These enormous mounds now look like eroded hills, but closer inspection shows they are made of adobe bricks (each uniquely marked by the family or community that contributed it). Here we caught up with better views of Tumbes Swallow before heading for lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon a walk near the hotel gave us nice looks at Peruvian Plantcutter by Adam Riley White-winged Guan by Dave Semler several species we had already seen, while a night walk found West Peruvian Screech Owl.

Trip Report - RBT Northern Peru Day 5: Cerro Chalpon, Abra Porculla and to Jaen In a pioneering frame of mind, we became the first birding tour to try and see Great Inca Finch at an isolated site, where a pilgrim s trail leading to a shrine accesses a steep mountain. We thought that by arriving early we would get ahead of the devout but had underestimated the numbers that would be camping on the steps. We made our way up surrounded by sellers of all things catholic and all foods imaginable. En route we did find some very habituated birds such as Tumbes Sparrow, Plumbeous-backed Thrush and others. We failed however to find the inca finches that we reported here last year, but did get to see at least 4 Andean Condors leaving their roost higher up the mountain. We then headed up to Abra Porculla pass where we found several of the last Tumbesian endemics that we were looking for, including Ecuadorian Piculet. After a picnic lunch we crossed over the Andes and into the Marañón Peruvian Thick-knees by Dave Semler valley and drove to Jaen. Day 6: Tamborapa and Jaen It was the coldest night of the year in Jaen and the temperature had dropped to only 17 degrees Celsius the night before! We rose early to brave the weather and headed north towards the Ecuadorean border, with magnificent views towards the Cordillera del Cóndor. We arrived at Tamborapa for packed breakfast in the dawn as Tataupa Tinamous called and one dashed across the road. Birding the trail we soon found most of the specialties we were searching for and had good looks at the endangered Marañón Spinetail. We headed back to Jaen for the heat of the day, and in the afternoon tried an area just outside town. Here we enjoyed good looks at a Zone-tailed Hawk and enjoyed fine views of both Dullcoloured Grassquit and Drab Seedeater amongst others. Black-cowled Saltator by Dave Semler Day 7: Jaen to Pomacochas We started the day south of Jaen and soon caught up with the endemic Little Inca Finch and found some day-roosting Lesser Nighthawks. We then headed east and crossed the Marañon River; here we found Ecuadorian Ground Dove. As we headed into the Utcubamba River Canyon we stopped several times for birds, finding Fasciated Tiger Heron and the threatened endemic Peruvian Pigeon. We had lunch in the small town of Pedro Ruiz. Thereafter we headed to Huembo a small property and visitor centre dedicated to one of the highlight birds of northern Peru the very aptly named Marvelous Spatuletail. Here we spent the afternoon watching several males and at least one female of

Trip Report - RBT Northern Peru this weird and wonderful hummingbird. Marvelous indeed!! In the late afternoon we headed to the Pomacochas Lake, where we soon found an Andean Lapwing and enjoyed good looks at Plumbeous Rail. Yellow-bellied Seedeaters and a Subtropical Doradito were watched in the reeds as hundreds of Western Cattle Egrets flew into roost. We then drove a few blocks to our hotel and enjoyed a nice dinner. Day 8: San Lorenzo trail and to Abra Patricia This morning we headed up the San Lorenzo trail with the goal of finding Pale-billed Antpitta. En route we had a good selection of birds as we climbed the stone trail. When we reached the right spot we were rewarded with 3 Pale-billed Antpittas, including prolonged looks at both an adult and a juvenile. We continued on up the trail and found a small flock, and also managed brief looks at Russet-mantled Softtail and then great views of a pair of the endemic Lulu s Tody- Tyrant. (Sorry, but I cannot bring myself to use the changed name of Johnson s Tody Tyrant Ned Johnson chose to call it Lulu s when he described the species and I think that should be respected [We agree wholeheartedly Rob!]). On Sword-billed Hummingbird by Dave Semler the way down we had brief looks at the notoriously shy Rusty-tinged Antpitta. We then returned to the hotel to collect bags and have lunch in a local restaurant before heading east again. Arriving at Abra Patricia we concentrated on the hummingbird feeders for a couple of hours, seeing a good variety including Sword-billed Hummingbird, Long-tailed Sylph, White-bellied Woodstar and Emerald-bellied Puffleg. We next headed down the Owlet trail to try our luck as night fell. En route a strange antbird call attracted our attention, and after making a recording we all had good looks at the rare and hard to find Bicoloured Antvireo! We also heard and got a response from Long-whiskered Owlet, but only Anne and Rob managed to get brief silhouetted flight views as it eluded our attempts to see it. Flame-faced Tanager by Dave Semler Day 9: Abra Patricia We awoke to a glorious sunny morning with Tayra and Black Agouti seen at the feeders during breakfast. The weather however was soon to become challenging, with heavy rain coming in for much of the morning and then bright sun later. We moved to different areas in an attempt to avoid the deluges. This challenged the birding but we made steady progress at finding a good variety of humid montane birds at slightly lower elevations until the rain came in there as well.

Trip Report - RBT Northern Peru In the afternoon we ventured back down the road to look at some hummingbird feeders, adding Greenish Puffleg to the list before we once again were soaked and headed back to the lodge. Day 10: Abra Patricia After the previous day s sun and rain we tried to play catch up, but the weather continued against us in the morning with intermittent rain becoming heavier later. We headed down to Alto Nieva and birded the trails picking up some nice birds including Golden-eyed Flowerpiercer, Mottle-cheeked Tyrannulet, Streaked Tuftedcheek and Three-striped Warbler; but the main targets remained elusive and overall activity was quite slow. We headed back to dry out and get an early lunch; pausing en route to watch a pair of Torrent Duck feeding intently. Before lunch some of the group birded the first 400m of the monkey trail, with the highlight being a nice mixed flock at the tower in a brief sunny interlude. Great looks at eye-level Flame-faced, Saffron-crowned and Grass-green Tanagers, and Drab Hemispingus. On the way back a Hooded Tinamou showed briefly for Andrew and Rob. Reinvigorated we headed out again and immediately things improved. We quite quickly Rufous-crested Coquette by Dave Semler found a male Royal Sunangel and, whilst watching it, picked up Rufous-tailed Tyrant and Smoke-coloured Pewee. We decided to go lower to escape the rain that was starting again and headed all the way down to Aguas Verdes and the small private reserve of Arena Blanca. Here there was no rain and we found a good selection of birds including Reddish Hermit, Many-spotted Hummingbird, Gilded Barbet, Chestnut-eared and Lettered Aracaris, and Red-ruffed Fruitcrow. The weather was apparently clearing at higher elevations and so we decided to head back up and try for the owlet at Alto Nieva. Arriving there the climate looked good and walking in we had great looks at the sought-after Bar-winged Wood Wren. We heard and were very close to a pair of Ochre-fronted Antpittas but the light was fading too fast to be able to see them. At dusk a Long-whiskered Owlet called briefly on the other side of the stream but totally failed to respond to playback and disappeared uphill and out of range. We returned to the lodge for dinner and then Andrew and Rob spent another few hours trying to see an owlet despite valiant efforts, no more than a brief flight view by Rob was obtained. Grass-green Tanager by Dave Semler Day 11: Abra Patricia to Moyobamba We started the morning on the Mono trail behind the lodge with nice views of Variable Antshrike and a few other familiar birds, but it was time to leave the temperate zone behind for a few days and we headed down the road to lower elevations,

Trip Report - RBT Northern Peru stopping for a flock of White-capped Tanagers. We spent most of the morning birding the upper sub-tropical area getting to grips with Golden-winged Manakin, Chestnut-tipped Toucanet, Peruvian Tyrannulet and others as we walked the roadside. Then we hit the motherload a large mixed tanager flock that we spent 40 minutes watching: Paradise, Green-and-gold and Saffron-crowned Tanagers were all present in double figures and were supported by smaller numbers of Beryl-spangled, Bay-headed, Goldeneared, Orange-eared, Yellow-bellied, Spotted and Blue-necked Tanagers. Accompanying these were Versicoloured Barbet, White-eared Solitaire, Ashbrowed Spinetail, Streaked Xenops, Rufousrumped and Buff-throated Foliage-gleaners, and Black-faced Dacnis. After lunch we headed towards Moyobamba. The late afternoon was spent at the Waqanki lodge feeders and gardens. The hummingbird feeders here are famous and we Black-throated Toucanet by Dave Semler found 18 hummingbird species including Rufouscrested Coquette, Reddish, Black-throated, Longtailed and Rufous-breasted Hermits, Golden-tailed and White-chinned Sapphires, Violet-headed Hummingbird and Black-throated Mango. Parrots seen flying over included Spot-winged Parrotlets, and the endemic Mishana Tyrannulet was seen very well. A dusk walk produced a very cooperative Spot-tailed Nightjar and good looks at a pair of Bandtailed Owls. After dinner more owling got the dedicated nice looks at Black-banded Owl. Day 12: Quebrada Mishquiaquillo and Cordillera Escalera to Tarapoto We birded the trail up the Quebrada Mishquiaquillo from the lodge in the morning. Despite not finding any large flocks we had constant activity and teased out a series of birds, including some tricky lowland and foothill species. In the afternoon we drove to Tarapoto, stopping en route at a site for Oilbirds. We were rewarded with good views of these strange nocturnal birds on nests and roost ledges. Arriving at Tarapoto we immediately went to the higher parts of the Cordillera Escalera ridge this outlying ridge is home to a few very rare and localized species. On the way up a small flock produced the first of these a stunning Dotted Tanager. We then visited some hummingbird feeders where we saw the second of the specialties several Koepcke s Hermits; other new hummers here were Gould s Jewelfront and brief views for some of a Pale-tailed Barbthroat feeding in Heliconia. Returning to the hotel we stopped for a group of Curl-crested Aracari and then, walking back to the bus, a couple of small birds flew into Golden-Tailed Sapphire by Dave Semler the canopy of a roadside tree scope views of

Trip Report - RBT Northern Peru Plumbeous Euphonia a very rare and localized bird known only from this site in Peru and a life bird for Rob. Quite an end to a day of some very good birds!! Day 13: Tarapoto to Plataforma, Cordillera Azul Today was essentially a travel day. We left early to the calls of a Tropical Screech Owl and travelled south to the town of Bellavista where we transferred into specially modified pickup trucks. From here we crossed the Huallaga River and travelled through a large expanse of rice fields before starting to climb. As we drove higher the road deteriorated to such an extent that we had to repeatedly stop so the drivers could shovel dry mud into the 2 foot deep wheel ruts in the mud; add to this some steep gradients, incredible Jacuzzi-sized potholes and ramshackle bridges, and the drive became a real adventure. We finally reached our destination, the small village of Plataforma, in time for a late lunch. In the afternoon we started to head up the trail behind the village, but torrential rain made us change plans and head back to the edge of the village where we could overlook some trees and fields. We found a steady selection of birds and spent the afternoon birding this area. The evening meal was followed by lots of oohhing and aahhing at the amazing selection of moths that were attracted to the hotel lights. White-tailed Jay by Dave Semler Day 14: Plataforma area After breakfast we took a stroll up the hill on the trail this is a slight understatement of the effort required as unseasonal heavy rain and heavy mule traffic associated with the coffee harvest had turned what should have been a moderate hike into an arduous slog up a very muddy trail. The group showed bravery in the face of adversity and all persisted through the quagmire stretches to reach the best area for the target bird, where the trail was much less muddy! Shortly after arriving we found an obliging pair of the recently discovered and highly sought-after Scarlet-banded Barbet, and enjoyed some 20 minutes watching them feeding and calling. Fantastic! We then returned slowly along the trail, birding as we went. We found a nice mixed flock and managed to see, among many others, Yungas Manakin, Foothill Schiffornis and the as-yet-undescribed foothill form of Long-tailed Woodcreeper, which may well deserve species status when described. In the afternoon we again birded near the hotel and the highlight was great looks at a pair of Rufous-breasted Antthrush. Scarlet-banded Barbet by Dave Semler Day 15: Plataforma to Moyobamba Today we travelled back down to the lowlands. The road was slightly drier on the surface but the

Trip Report - RBT Northern Peru ruts were deeper and the pickups had to be dug out on several occasions; it therefore took all morning to get back to Tarapoto for lunch. In the afternoon we continued to Moyobamba, stopping for another look at the Oilbirds en route. Day 16: Moyobamba to Pomacochas We left at dawn and made a couple of stops near Moyobamba where the highlight was a pair of Masked Duck and a Black-billed Seedfinch. We continued on to the Arena Blanca Reserve, where we soon saw a very confiding pair of Little Tinamou giving great looks. We then battled with a Thrush-like Antpitta, which despite coming very close only gave views to a couple of people. Most of the day was spent birding our way back up to Abra Patricia. We found a good flock and saw some new species including Variegated Bristle Tyrant, Slaty Antwren and Bluebrowed Tanager. In the afternoon we tried for Ochre-fronted Antpitta again, but just after hearing it the rain came in very hard and we could not find the bird. We headed on to Pomacochas and birded near the lake finding both Andean and Puna Snipe in the wet fields. Day 17: Pomacochas to Kuelap and on to Leymebamba We made an early start to Pedro Ruiz where some birding gave us good looks at Marañón Thrushes and Peruvian Pigeons. But the show here was stolen by great looks at the tiny Little Woodstar what a lovely little bird! Koepcke's Screech Owls by Dave Semler We then drove up the Utcumbamba valley to the town of Tingo, seeing a Fasciated Tiger Heron en route. At Tingo we turned off onto a dirt road to climb up to the walled citadel of Kuelap. We spent a few hours exploring this incredible place, where trees still cover much of the impressive site. We returned to the vehicle for a picnic lunch before heading back down to Tingo and driving to the delightful Andean town of Leymebamba. En route we stopped to admire a pair of endemic Koepcke s Screech Owls at a known roost site. White-tailed Hawk by Dave Semler Day 18: Leymebamba area: Abra Callacalla (Barro Negro) and Rio Atuen This morning we headed up to the elfin forest at Abra Callacalla, where our main aim was to find the endemic Coppery Metaltail. We soon saw several and then enjoyed other Andean birds including a nice mixed flock and some great looks at two Grass-green Tanagers. We then birded back down the road to Leimebamba. In the late morning we visited the fascinating Leimebamba museum, learning about the ancient Chachapoyas culture and seeing the many mummies found at the Laguna de los Condores nearby.

Trip Report - RBT Northern Peru After lunch in a local restaurant we next visited some hummingbird feeders where we enjoyed good looks at the localized and spectacular Rainbow Starfrontlet. The late afternoon in the Rio Atuen was very quiet, apart from the military helicopters flying overhead; part of a rescue operation for a French caver we later found out. The main birding highlight was several groups of Plum-crowned Parrots. Day 19: Leymebamba to Celendin This morning we left early to drive through the Marañón valley to the town of Celendin. This spectacular route takes one over the high pass of Abra Callacalla shrouded in mist, down into tropical dry forest at the bottom of the canyon, and then back to the highlands on the rain shadow side of the valley. The changing habitats along the way ensure a staggering variety of birds and it would be easy to spend several days birding this route. We started birding in the higher forests over the pass and soon found a flock of Mountain Caciques and two White-chinned Thistletails. We also enjoyed fantastic looks at two of the endemic Russet-mantled Softtails. Descending into the drier forest we started finding Marañón endemics Buff-bridled Inca Finch by Anne Heyerly including Buff-bridled and Grey-winged Inca Finches, Yellow-faced Parrotlet and Chestnut-backed Thornbird. As we rose to the western edge of the canyon we started to find highland birds again and soon saw Golden-billed Saltator and Jelski s Chat-Tyrant. We ended the day watching a Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle just before we arrived in Celendin for the night. Day 20: Celendin to Cajamarca and Rio Chonta We headed out of Celendin early and had a field breakfast. We then birded a series of small woodlots trying to see the endemic cajamarcae race of Rufous Antpitta. Despite getting very close we didn t manage to see the bird once again the rain stopped play just as we got very close! Moving on we compensated with great looks for all of Stripe-headed Antpitta, and then misty looks at a Rufous-webbed Tyrant. During the morning a few small flocks gave us good views of the baroni subspecies of Rufous-naped Brush Finch and also Baron s Spinetail. We then drove on to the city of Cajamarca and checked into our hotel before enjoying lunch in a traditional restaurant in the city of Cajamarca. In the afternoon we quickly visited the Ventanillas de Otuzco archaeological site to have a look at the impressive rock tombs cut into a cliff. Then we headed to the Chonta River valley; this is the world s most reliable site for the endangered Grey-bellied Comet, even though there are no more than a handful of pairs and it can be a challenging bird to find. However, luck was on our side and after just a few minutes at the Yellow-faced Parrotlet by Dave Semler

Trip Report - RBT Northern Peru best spot Andrew saw an adult male and all had good views of it feeding. We quickly added Rusty-crowned Tit-Spinetail and the endemic Black Metaltail to the list as we birded the valley. Day 21: San Marcos, Laguna San Nicolas and Cumbe Mayo Today we birded higher elevations near Cajamarca. We started heading back to the upper Marañón Valley near the town of San Marcos where we soon found our target bird of Great Spinetail. We enjoyed good looks at this inexplicably scarce and local endemic. We also saw a variety of other Marañón species including Buff-bridled Inca Finch and had nice looks at several Spot-throated Hummingbirds. Blue-and-yellow Tanager was new for the trip. The San Nicolas Lake was our next stop. Here we caught up with some high Andean waterbirds including Andean Gull, Yellow-billed Teal and Yellow-billed Pintail. The reeds held good numbers of Wren-like Rushbirds and roosting Black-crowned Night Herons, and the shoreline gave us looks at Spot-billed Ground Tyrants. We then drove to Cumbe Mayo, an archaeological site above Cajamarca, where we White-bellied Woodstar by Dave Semler lunched and then walked the trail along the canal, finding high Andean species including Striated Earthcreeper, Cream-winged Cinclodes, Streak-throated Canastero, Paramo Pipit, Plumbeous Sierra Finch and Andean Hillstar. We returned to the hotel to enjoy the waters of the hot springs and for a final dinner. Day 22: Abra Gavilan This morning we took a quick trip out to a pass near Cajamarca to look for the endemic Unicoloured Tapaculo. We heard at least five and managed a few glimpses of a couple in the time available. We then returned to the hotel for breakfast, whereafter we headed to the airport for our flight to Lima and onwards. We had had a great tour and recorded a total of 631 bird species, including 27 heard only. (Many thanks to Dave Semler and Anne Heyerly for so generously allowing us to use their images in this trip report much appreciated!) Annotated List of Birds recorded Nomenclature and taxonomy follows the IOC 4.1 list of: Gill, F. and Wright, M. Birds of the World: Recommended English Names. Princeton NJ: Princeton University Press. Total species recorded: 631 species (including 27 heard only)
