2 Scrunch Design Instructions Part 1 Place a damp shirt flat on the table, front side up - starting at the center of the shirt, pinch small (1/2") folds in a random fashion. Scrunch Design Instructions Part 2 Keep them small and tight so that you ll get the most interesting end result. Place rubber bands across the bundle, one straight across, the next at 90 degrees to the first. Continue to place an additional 4-6 rubber bands across the t-shirt bundle 2

3 Rounded Yoke Shirt Lay a damp shirt flat on the table and fold in half lengthwise with the front outside, matching sleeves and shoulders. Smooth out wrinkles. Begin fold at the shoulder seam, between the neck and sleeve by pinching about 1/2" between your thumbs and forefingers. Place rubber bands at 1 intervals along the pleats - the tighter you pull, the more dye will be resisted in that line. Leave the bottom untied Continue pinching pleats, moving toward the center front fold, straightening the pleats as you go. (rounded yoke_pleating). Be sure that the pleats end in the neck and not in the center fold to ensure that the yoke is as round as possible. 3

4 Spiral Design Shirt Place a damp shirt flat on the table, front side up. Smooth out wrinkles, align seams at sides and shoulders. Decide where you want the spiral to begin. Pinch a bit of fabric between your fingers and give your wrist a twist. Lift your hand and pinch that bit again, giving it another turn. Continue in this fashion, straightening the folds as you go. The folds should be about 1/2" high, so if you have bigger ones, press a finger in the center of each fold to split into two. When your spiral gets larger it will tend to pile up in the middle. To prevent this, lay your hand flat on the shirt and continue turning, straightening and splitting folds. 4

5 Tie the bundle by placing rubber bands around the flattened bundle at regular intervals between 2-4 apart, pulling snug as you go. The finished bundle should be divided fairly evenly by the rubber bands Horizontal Bands Shirt Lay a damp shirt flat on the table, usually with the front side up. Smooth out any wrinkles and align seams at sides and shoulders. Begin fold under one sleeve by pinching about 1/2" between your thumbs and forefingers 5

6 Continue pinching folds across the shirt, straighten the pleats as you go by pulling at the ends as shown. Please rubber bands in three areas in the middle of the shirt (your choice) about 2 apart. These are ready for you to apply color. Leave the top and bottom of the shirt untied. Roll the cloth very loosely, forming a long tube. The stripes will be at right angles to the tube Loop rubber bands or wrap string around the long shirt at about 2-4 apart. Make sure the ties are very tight. Now you can either immerse or squirt the dye on, alternating colors 6

7 Pinch the fabric to raise a fold. Continue to pinch up more pleats until you reach the end of the cloth. You can change directions as often as you want by gathering more material in one hand than in the other. Loop rubber bands around the pleats several times. You can use as many ties as you want. This useful technique is also employed in tying ovals, squares, diamonds or any shape you can imagine which has symmetry. Vertical stripe Tie-Dye pattern instructions Upper Left Picture fold your t-shirt in horizontal pleats from the bottom to the top. Make the pleats as small or as large as you want. Upper Right Picture start wrapping small rubber bands around the pleats. Bottom Left Picture continue to put as many rubber bands as vertical stripes you wish to have on your shirt. You may use the rubber bands as reference points for the dye colors. VARIATIONS Put the pleats on the diagonal for angled stripes Pleat it vertically for horizontal stripes 7
