2 Reliability and efficiency are the foundations of a productive apple orchard. That is why orchard owners depend on Italian machines. La Pommeraie de St-Jean Verger Trois Pommes Verger Alfred Charron As one of the first orchard owners in Québec to purchase Italian machinery, Alfred Charron, owner of Verger Alfred Charron, made his decision to purchase Italian-made machinery in In 1987, Mr. Charron visited the manufacturing plant in Italy. I was able to witness first-hand the terrific professionalism of Italian machinery manufacturers, says Mr. Charron. Established in 1976, Verger Alfred Charron's 14,000 trees produce a variety of apples. Selling his produce to wholesalers and large grocers, Mr. Charron relies on his Italian machinery including Maibo compressors, Tifone sprayers and Campagnola air-powered pruning shears. Listing reliability, efficiency and precision as key requirements in purchasing orchard machinery, Mr. Charron also emphasizes the practical reasons for his switch to Italian machinery. The Campagnola shears are light enough that at the end of the day, you are much less tired than you would be otherwise. My Tifone sprayer is powered by my tractor's take-off and is made out of fibreglass. It is much easier to maintain in comparison with the old metal equipment I used in the past. Benoit Bouthillier, owner of Verger Trois Pommes, has also been using Tifone sprayers, saying efficiency was his reason for his switch from North American machinery. Before, controlled spraying was much more difficult to accomplish. Tifone sprayers are far more precise and their settings are much easier. They allow me to spray at a distance of 20 to 25 feet, which is far greater than the average sprayer on the market, explains Mr. Bouthillier. For Florent St-Jean, owner of La Pommeraie de St-Jean, Italian machinery has meant increased crop output and profitability. In 1987, we decided to plant our trees closer to save space and increase our profits. We purchased the Antonio Carraro tractor because it is specifically designed for orchards. They are narrower machines but aren't prone to tipping, he explains. Along with the tractor, Mr. St-Jean's Tifone sprayers and Italian-made shears help ensure that his market-bound fresh produce is of the highest quality. Rating his satisfaction at nine out of ten, Mr. St-Jean values the quality of his Italian machinery over the lower cost of the competition. Before the Euro, it was more financially advantageous to buy Italian tractors. Although the price has increased, I prefer my Antonio Carraro, even though I could have gotten an American tractor for less, says Mr. St-Jean. Mr. Charron boasts of the efficiency of his Italian machinery: Using the Italian machinery has been a huge time saver. Before, a pesticide treatment required two days of work. I now can do it in 12 hours using 75% less spray. Mr. Bouhillier, for his part, says Italian machinery provides dependability in service and consistency in results that he can always rely on. 4 Using dependable tools is essential for building dependable products. This is especially true when it comes to industrial machinery. If a machine is not dependable, production and profits suffer. Tempo Plastics For Joe Giglio, president of Tempo Plastics, however, this is not a worry. He knows his Italian-made printing presses are built to last. Ever since he created Tempo Plastics in 1969, he has been a devoted user and supporter of Flexotecnica printing presses made by the Italian-based Cerutti Group. When we started, we looked around for a high-quality machine. While we saw many printing presses, only the Italian machinery appealed to us. Nothing stood out like Flexotecnica presses. With more than 35 years of experience in manufacturing and exporting plastic items such as bags, sheets and wrap, Mr. Giglio knows how to run a successful business. He explained that after-sale service is an important part of business relations and Flexotecnica takes this very seriously. Machine service is carried out through regular maintenance visits for the first six months to one year. After that, they ensure that our staff know how to perform complete preventative maintenance on the machine. Mr. Giglio recently parted with his first printing press but was still amazed by how well it worked after 35 years of outstanding performance. His only reason for selling the printing press was that it was unable to keep up with the speed of the newer Flexotecnica presses. He would recommend Italian-made machinery to anyone starting or running a business, laughing as he adds, with such a strong reputation for excellence, the only issue I have with them is that they last longer than you want them! Mr. Giglio recently announced his intention to purchase his ninth Flexotecnica press. 6 What does it take to be a successful hockey player? Martin Pelchat, plant manager and engineer of Fibres Armtex Inc. of Magog, Québec, knows that a player s success is enhanced by strong and durable equipment. The hockey stick has come a long way from the single piece of wood from which it was first made, says Pelchat. Today s hockey sticks the ones used by professional players as well as on shinny rinks have blades reinforced with carbon, fibreglass and even Kevlar. Hockey sticks take abuse and need to be sturdy. That s why a portion of the Armtex business is in making blade wraps the fabric material that wraps around and reinforces the foot of the hockey stick for major sport apparel companies. To create hockey blade wraps Armtex uses the Italian-made weaving machine SMIT TEXTILE G6300. The G6300 rapier-weaving machine came to the market in 1999 and has since proven to be a leader in Pelchat s eyes. Armtex used to use a competing Czechoslovakian weaving machine, but two years ago it had to be replaced at the rate we were producing, our old machine just could not keep up. That along with the fact that spare parts were difficult to obtain. We decided to go with the Italian machine. With the SMIT TEXTILE we have now sharply increased our productivity: set-up time has been reduced from hours to only minutes. Pelchat also says the Italian machine is far more accurate. Compared with other machines, there is not as much down time to reset the materials once the fabrics are set. The Italian machines are just that much more accurate. In terms of speed and efficiency, there can be no comparison between the performance of SMIT TEXTILE and that of other makers, explains Pelchat. With stronger athletes and increasingly fierce competition on the ice, companies recognize the need for strong, reinforced equipment, and some of the world s largest hockey apparel companies come to Armtex to finish the hockey sticks they sell. Armtex also uses Italian machinery to polish snowboards and water-skis. Special sanders are used to buff the topside of sporting equipment to enable the printing of company logos and design. Companies look to us because they know that thanks to our machinery, we can offer the best product, says Pelchat. We are getting more and more demands to have different colours and designs of weave for the hockey blades in addition to reinforcing the blade, players also want to make a statement with the way their stick is wrapped, and manufacturers are eager to comply. Armtex specializes in the production and finishing of goods in sporting, furniture, nautical, auto, transportation and aerospace industries. It has three divisions for laminate, textile, and wood finishing. In addition to creating the hockey blade wraps, Armtex also produces a host of intriguing products. We work on the windshields for aircrafts, say Pelchat. Armtex has a special sanding belt that is encrusted with diamonds that finely polishes the glass giving it the clearest visibility obviously important for air flight. With increased global competition, the Canadian textile industry needs to step up productivity and innovation while specializing in high-tech, high value added products.
