Last September, 2500 students from across Canada competed in the Kaminski Short Story Contest, hoping to win a university scholarship and a trip to the Young Writer s Conference to be held this July. On February 1, Roya Abtahi, 13, a student at Tundra Secondary School in Fillipot, was awarded first prize. This is the first time the award has been given to a student in the province of Manitoba. The winning story is titled The Snow Bird. It is about a 12- year-old Egyptian girl s first exciting winter in Canada. The story, which takes place during a terrible December snowstorm, is based on Roya s personal experience. The entries were first judged by a panel of 150 high school English teachers, 15 from each province. The 10 provincial winners were then read by Colin Kaminski, a university professor in British Columbia. Concerning his final decision, Kaminski said I couldn t stop reading. It was like I was there. Line: The Canadian Textile Industry The manufacturing of cloth for use in clothing, upholstery, and bedding is one of Canada s leading industries. The textile industry employs 60,000 Canadians, and textile mill production averages about 6 billion dollars annually. Since early in its history, Canada has been a world leader in the production of cloth. Journals indicate that in 1671 Canadian pioneers were making wool material for clothing and furnishings. The first factory to weave wool cloth was started in 1826 by Mahlon Willet in Acadie, Quebec. The natural fibre cotton has always been the mainstay of the Canadian textile industry. It was first milled in 1844 by the Macon brothers of Sherbrooke, Quebec. Silk, a product not usually associated with Canada, was first made in 1876, in Montreal. The manufacture of synthetic material was introduced in 1925 when Courtaulds Company of Cornwall, Ontario built a factory to make viscose rayon, often called artificial silk. Rayon was primarily used in the manufacture of clothing. In 1942, the first nylon was produced in Canada by DuPont. From the time of its inception, nylon has proven to be a lightweight, yet durable, fabric. During the second world war, nylon was kept a military secret. The material was used to make parachutes and the government did not want the plant s location revealed. It was not until 1950 that the first Canadian consumer product made from nylon, stockings, was marketed. Today, the Canadian textile industry is internationally competitive in pricing, quality and variety. In fact, Canada is currently a pioneer in the development of computers and microprocessors used in the manufacture and design of cloth. Read each question carefully.
