1 Construction Trades For the future you want
2 CONSTRUCTION TRADES From brickwork, plastering and tiling to roofing, stonemasonry, carpentry, painting, joinery and decorating our construction skills courses will prepare you for the building and construction industry. While studying at Edinburgh College you will benefit from realistic working environments that are at the forefront of training technology. All our courses provide a vocational qualification designed to prepare you for employment, for career development or for progression to further study. You may have the opportunity to work on real projects which relate the tasks you could expect to find in the industry. We work with the training provider CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) on our apprenticeship courses as well as supporting pre-apprentices into employment where possible. Edinburgh College is proud to support students through regional and national competitions. Past students have won several World Skills and UK Skills Awards and our qualified teaching staff have supported regional, national, and international skills champions across several disciplines, including stonemasonry and brickwork. SPOTLIGHT PLASTERER PICKS UP SECOND AWARD FACILITIES Our excellent facilities at Granton and Forthside Campus ensure the construction trade training we offer is of the highest standard. You will find up-todate workshop facilities that provide reallife workspaces and resources like those found within the industry. All our workshops are designed in accordance with the requirements of CITB and awarding bodies. PARTNERS It s only been six months since his last award win but Edinburgh College trainee plasterer Thomas Morgan has been named Plasterers Guild Student of the Year The 21 year old, who is in the fourth year of his apprentice with Fife Council, won the Screwfix Trade Apprentice of the Year in May of this year making it a truly award-winning year for Thomas. His portfolio of plastering achievements and work was deemed the winning entry at the annual Plaisterers Guild competition which celebrates the highest standards of achievement in training and education within the UK plastering trade. Midlothian Council send their Apprentice Road workers to Edinburgh College because of the consistent high quality delivery of training provided by Edinburgh College. MARK RANKINE MANAGER MIDLOTHIAN COUNCIL
3 SPOTLIGHT DAN MACAULAY // AWARD WINNING APPRENTICE Edinburgh College Stonemasonry apprentice Hamish Innes has won a bronze medal at the national final of the UK s longest-running construction skills competition. After competing in the regional qualifiers earlier this year, Hamish and fellow Edinburgh College stonemasonry apprentice Calum Munro progressed to the UK National Skillbuild Final, which was held at the Birmingham NEC. The duo took on finalists from across the UK in the Skillbuild 2017 competition which is organised by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) annually. The competition saw construction trainees compete in their chosen trades including bricklaying, wall and floor tiling and painting and decorating. Hamish and Calum both put in a sterling performance against the UK s top stonemasonry apprentices, with Hamish scooping the bronze medal. He said: I really enjoyed taking part in the competition and was pleased with my overall performance. To compete in the final was amazing and to win a bronze medal was even better. The standard was really high and everyone was so good. I m happy that my hard work paid off and I got the bronze. I d like to say thank you to my dad James Innes and lecturer Gordon Mallace who have both taught me and helped me to get to this level. Ian Hughes, CITB partnerships director for Scotland, said: It is fantastic to see Hamish and Calum make it into the UK National Final of SkillBuild 2017 and taking the opportunity to showcase their skills on a national stage. SkillBuild is one of many ways we can show the immense talent coming into our industry and attract more young people from the region into a rewarding construction career.
4 SPOTLIGHT JORDAN CHARTERS // PAINTING & DECORATING APPRENTICE There s not much Jordan hasn t accomplished after completing his third year at Edinburgh College on the Painting & Decorating modern apprenticeship. Juggling long hours in the college workshops with an on site apprenticeship at his dad s painting and decorating firm, Jordan strongly believes that the course was the right path for him. I left school with five Highers and I could ve gone to university but I wanted to go straight into the world of employment and give myself a good kick start. I m not really a sit-down-andrevise kind of guy but I did want the opportunity to open doors into the industry. I would love to become a specialist in many aspects of the painting trade, particularly marbling, graining and gold leafing, which I am learning every day. I also intend to run my own business one day. The structure of the college term means that much time is dedicated to getting students work ready. I ve never felt restricted by class assignments or academic overload. By third year you ve got even more opportunity to specialise with your Advanced Craft module so the list is endless. Named as the centre s apprentice of the year for the last two years and winning a College Recognition Award, Jordan has taken his skill sets to major industry competitions and has had great success. The latest win, saw Jordan achieve a bronze medal in the UK s Crown Apprentice Painter & Decorators competition in Birmingham. Jordan said his progression in competition has been exciting and he is learning at every stage. His success was also helped at college when it came to course studies in decorative work. He was also able to pass on his experience to his classmates as well as talk about typical barriers to learning such as problem solving. Jordan recently competed in the World Skills 2017 finals in Abu Dhabi. He achieved a Medallion of Excellence after a gruelling four days competing against the world s top competitors in his field. My success should inspire new apprentices to achieve their goals, whatever level that may be but also show apprentices undertaking competition what can be achieved.
