16 14 Engineering Case study - James Hobday Impossible Creations offers a ground-breaking custom scan, design and modelling service made possible by the UK s next generation of rapid prototyping 3D technology, offering a complete reverse engineering and design service. James Hobday started his career at Impossible Creations in August 2011 when it was just himself and Ian Carter (the owner) working out of Ian s garage. Today the company has an office, a 3D print room with three printers and employs 5 staff. Before starting his career through an apprenticeship, James studied product design and graphics at Robert Clack School 6th form. James teacher by chance knew Ian and suggested James got in contact. James was offered the apprenticeship, and Ian decided this was best delivered through PROCAT, the UK s leading college of advanced technology. Starting small (and from the garage!) James and Ian would go to shows to promote the work that they do. Growing rapidly, James has now been all over the country including spending 10 months on the interior design of a private jet in Birmingham. Work isn t repetitive and constantly provides new challenges which keeps James on his toes and interested. James has particularly enjoyed working on classic cars - re-designing existing parts to replicate the originals, in some cases these are even better than originals! Starting on a Level 2 intermediate apprenticeship, James went on

30 28 Engineering Girls in Engineering Attracting and inspiring young women into engineering is vital if the UK is to create the strong and diverse engineering workforce it so desperately needs. This is why, with our employer partners, PROCAT is working hard to recruit more young women on to the hundreds of advanced engineering apprenticeships we offer every year. The apprenticeship and career opportunities for aspiring engineers are fantastic diverse, global and high technology based and with such demand for high quality engineers that are in short supply, the world is your oyster! Skills shortage Why engineering? The UK is heading for an engineering skills crisis. The rapid growth of the industry coupled with an ageing workforce means that the sector needs to recruit 2.2 million more people over the next five to 10 years to meet demand. If the sector is to achieve the required growth for the future, a concerted effort is needed to attract more women into the profession. Despite the broad array of opportunities available to them with engineering companies urgently trying to recruit more female employees, women still only represent 8.7% of professional engineers. The UK cannot continue to miss out on the talent on offer in half of the population. Though young women consistently match or even outclass their male peers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects, engineering is too often viewed as a male career option. Engineering provides the chance to study towards an interesting and varied career. There are many different aspects of engineering to specialise in, from electronics and robotics, to transport and aviation. Few other industries can offer such exciting and rewarding work, whilst promising strong job opportunities and high salaries.

31 What do women studying engineering have to say? Some of the female students at PROCAT had their say on choosing to study engineering: Engineering workplaces are traditionally male dominated but I think that the industry is changing. I would emphasise to girls the huge amount and variety of opportunities available to them in engineering careers. Abigail Sampson Advanced Apprentice, Leonardo Females should definitely look into a career in engineering as there is just as much opportunity for females and there is for males. There is such a wide range of job roles within the industry. Anastasia Lake Advanced Apprentice, Atkins When I first wanted to become an engineer, I found it a bit daunting. But as soon as I was in that environment, I realised that there wasn t anything to be worried about. You re part of the team and you have just the same opportunities as everyone else. So go for it! 46 44 Transport The Thales UK Story Why Companies Like Thales Hire Apprentices Whether you re thinking about hiring your first apprentice or simply want your current scheme to be more successful, there are many good reasons to look to Thales UK. For this engineering company, apprentices aren t an add-on factor but a key part of its HR strategy. Apprenticeships at Thales, in terms of hiring, are very much part of our talent pipeline, says Nicola Todd, Head of Apprenticeship Development. We recruit on all levels of our business [and] they feed into our succession plans for years to come. While the historic image of apprentices is of learning a trade and sticking at it, Thales has a clear focus on that word talent. It allows the company to handpick the best candidates, with no shortage of applicants for every vacancy, and help them get the most from their abilities. There s certainly no glass ceiling. Some of our apprentices have gone on to high-profile positions within the company, says Nicola. Some members of our management board are ex-apprentices, so it shows you can work your way up to the top. Another key difference from hiring in other ways say, graduates or from people on their second, third or fourth job is the level of enthusiasm a tight-knit group of apprentices can offer a company. They re so enthusiastic, so engaged, enthuses Nicola herself. They really do add value from a very early stage. PROCAT has been training apprentices since 1969, when it was first established by a group of local engineering employers who wanted a training facility. Since then it s rapidly grown and developed, becoming the UK s first college of Advanced Technology

47 I think they re a fantastic investment, and they re really motivated, really engaged and it s a great way to grow talent within a business. back in We chose PROCAT for many reasons, says Paul Scott, Services Capability Manager, with just one being that they know what they re doing! Their facilities are really good and the relationship that we ve built up has been fantastic. Both parties were keen to set up a long-term partnership, to the extent that PROCAT built a working train track within its Basildon campus and fitted Thales equipment so that students can apply what they learn in college out on the tracks the very next day. So, we asked Paul, should other employers choose PROCAT? Definitely. They re professionals, they know what they re doing. They ve had thousands of apprentices come through this facility go to the experts. With the arrival of the apprenticeship levy in April 2017 (see below), there will be thousands of British companies planning to take on apprentices for the first time. Engineering firms have naturally taken the lead over the years, so what could others learn from their experience? The advice I always give to other employers is to recruit apprentices, says Nicola. I think they re a fantastic investment, and they re really motivated, really engaged and it s a great way to grow talent within a business

59 Case Study Carpentry When I finished my GCSEs, I wasn t sure what career I wanted to go into. I thought it would be a good idea to learn a trade so enrolled with PROCAT. Four years on, I am now in the final year of an advanced apprenticeship with Kier Services and looking forward to a career in carpentry. Though I initially intended carpentry to be a fall back option whilst deciding what to do in the future, I took to it very quickly. There was lots to learn which kept me interested and I decided I wanted to pursue a career in the industry. I finished my first course early and, with the help of the college, started looking at and applying for apprenticeships. I did some labouring and roofing work but I wanted to continue my education so that I could become qualified. I wasn t able to find an apprenticeship at first so PROCAT offered me a chance to further my skills in carpentry on another college course. Three months into my course, the college helped me to land an apprenticeship and I transferred to that course. I was really grateful to the college for all the help they provided. I am really enjoying my apprenticeship; it s great to work for a big company that offers job security and progression opportunities. Kier Services agreed to fund and support me even getting me a company van once I pass my driving test. I really want to continue working for Kier once I finish my apprenticeship but also want to progress further by looking into higher level qualifications. In the long term, my aim is to have my own company with employees working for me! Connor Black Kier Services 56-57
