2 There are many great reasons to build your career in North East England. This booklet, developed through a partnership between North East England Chamber of Commerce and Nifco UK Ltd, is designed to give you an idea of some of the key employment sectors in our region, and to help you to make a decision about your future career.

3 The North East is a vibrant region, with strengths in traditional industries and rapid growth in modern, high technology sectors. The North East England Chamber of Commerce represents 3,000 businesses across the North East, and our members are responsible for a third of all the jobs in the region. Our members need to find people with the skills to help their businesses grow, and they often tell us that this can be difficult if young people don t know about the career choices available locally. With five world-class universities, sixteen Further Education colleges - with the second highest proportion of good or outstanding provision nationally and more apprenticeship opportunities than anywhere else in the country, there are many options for training and building your skills to get the job you want. Our region has world-leading, innovative companies in sectors predicted to grow in the next 10 years, including electric vehicles, renewable energy, biologics and life sciences, software and app development, financial and banking technology, and robotics. The rest of this booklet will give you an overview of some of the careers available in the North East, and more information and resources are available on the Chamber s website. So, if anyone tells you there are no jobs around here anymore it isn t true. As well as the new opportunities created by our growing industry sectors, over 200,000 people in the North East are due to reach retirement age in the next 20 years, generating demand for young people looking to start their careers. With great career opportunities, breath-taking countryside, cultural and sporting venues on your doorstep, why would you go anywhere else?

4 168,000 The Manufacturing sector in the North East employs around 168,000 people almost 10% of the entire workforce. Career options in our region range from working with textiles to nuclear energy, and making everything from trains to submarines. 27,000 In the 10 years between 2012 and 2022, 36,000 people will retire from the manufacturing sector and during the same time, as a result of automation and efficiency measures, 9,000 fewer roles will be needed in manufacturing leaving a gap of 27,000 manufacturing jobs to fill in the North East before 2022.

5 5,500 The largest integrated chemicals plant in the UK is at Wilton in Teesside, with over 5,500 people directly employed and many more working in the supply chain. Roles include biochemists, research scientists and materials engineers. 29,500 According to the Institute of Chemical Engineers, graduate starting salaries are in the region of 29,500 for chemical engineers.

6 4,800 North East England is home to over 4,800 creative, digital and technology companies, and the North East software and technology market is worth nearly 2billion. The digital and creative sector in the North East is one of the fastest growing in the country. 15 million The Government will invest 15 million into the new National Institute for Smart Data Innovation at the Science Central site in Newcastle. This could lead to the creation of 1,000 new jobs in the sector, and builds on our region s specialities in data analysis, e-commerce, gaming and software development.

7 38,000 The North East is home to world-leading pharmaceutical manufacturers and life science researchers. There are around 38,000 people employed in the life sciences and healthcare sector in the North East, and the sector contributes 10.5 billion to the regional economy. 38 million The National Biologics Manufacturing Centre in Darlington has received 38 million in Government funding to support the growth of the biologics industry in the region.

8 15,000 The subsea, marine, and offshore sector supports over 15,000 jobs in the North East, many of which are highly-skilled and well paid technical roles. Career options include jobs in the offshore oil and gas industry, subsea cable-laying for the energy and telecoms sectors, and manufacturing and maintenance for the wind energy industry. 20% 5 Starting salaries for graduates entering the engineering industry can be upwards of 20,000, and salaries for engineering and technology graduates are 20% higher than the average graduate starting salary.
