Chippendale Cherry Carved Scroll-top Chest-on-Chest, Colchester, Connecticut, c , with pinwheel rosettes or fylfots flanking a gadrooned central finial over one of two carved shells with notch decoration, a punched border and incised serpentine lines in outline as well as reeding below, above a molded and carved flat apron flanked by knee carving with its vertical flutes over a carved spiral device on short cabriole legs ending in claw and flattened ball feet, the upper backboard is saddle shaped, old replaced brasses, (repairs), ht. 85 1/4 including finial, wd. 37 1/2, dp. 19 3/4 in. Provenance: This piece belonged to the ancestors of Charles Crocker II, who owned the Crocker-Burbank Company of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, in the 19th century. Note: Furniture in the Lord group, the largest and probably the earliest of the Colchester groups, is named for the wealthy and distinguished Epaphras Lord ( ), the presumed owner of many pieces of case furniture with distinctive characteristics, all produced by Colchester, Connecticut, craftsmen. 7 Thomas Chambers ( ) emigrated from England to New York City at the age of 24. He became a painter known for landscapes and marine and portrait paintings that he accomplished without any formal art training. Using what has been described as a semi-primitive style, Chambers did elaborate views of specific places from engravings as well. He is best known for his scenes of the Hudson River from Albany and New York City. He left a body of work representing years spent in the following places: Boston, ; Albany, ; and New York City, The paintings presented in this sale are reflective of the years in these places with the exception of the view of Pope s Creek Plantation in Westmoreland County, Virginia, which is probably derived from an engraving of the birthplace of George Washington Attributed to Thomas Chambers (London, New York, and Boston, ) View of New York Bay from Brooklyn Heights.
