1 OUR TRIP TO RIVA GLASS FURNACE FOUNDATION 'The Cam Ocagi Vakfi' or 'The Glass Furnace Foundation is one of the world's most distinguished glass schools and studios. It is the most well equipped glass and art center in Turkey. It was built near the River Riva in2002. It stays hand in hand with green nature, has a unique atmosphere which is calm and yet full of creativity. We organized a trip to Riva Glass Furnace Foundation to get information aboutthe process of the glass. It took almost two hours to arrive there. It is 40km far away from our school, 50.Yil General Reefet Bele Secondary School.15 students from 8th grades - 8-A and 8-B took part in this task. They were very excited and willing to join the worhkshops there. The glass furnace is a specialized furnace used in glass production. Chemicals are heated together in a glass furnace to their melting point, when they fuse into molten glass. This liquid can then be formed into the shape it will retain when it cools and solidifies. The glass furnace allows glassmakers to control the temperature of the glass, so it does not break or lose its shape as it cools. We had three different workshops: The first one was 'Fusion Workshop'. Fusing is joining two or more pieces of glass by heating until they flow together or alternatively heating up the glasses until they just stick together, with each piece retaining its individual character. Our students made their own designs on their glasses just putting various shapes and colours of pieces of glasses. Sometimes they thought it was a kind of jigsaw puzzle.they firstly got information aboutthe Fusion Workshop from Mrs Gülben.She gave very detailed information about this workshop and showed some examples to them. Then, she gave them at most 40 minutes to finish this activity. After that we left the plates there just to bu furneced in 10 hours and they would be sent to our school later by them. Then, we left our green glass bottles to be recycled. Each student brought three bottles happily and willingly because they are all nature-friendly students. Next workshop was 'Flame Working' which was shown by Ms.Vahide by explaining each process indetails. She made us a very cute, colourful small fish. They asked some questions while she was making the small fish. Sheuesd two glass sticks and started to give the shape by the help of the flame. At the end she put it into sand in order to make it cold. Because the temperature of the

2 fish object was 1200 degrees. Just one hour later it was ready for us and we could take it in our hands. The last workshop was 'Glassblowing'. We went to the big place where there were many tools, furnace, etc. The students excitedly watched each process of Glassblowing by asking many questions. The artist of Glassblowing gave very detaled explanatio during the Show. We happily left Riva Glass Furnace Foundation after getting our recycled, pressed green bottles and doing shopping with full of good memories. One week later they delivered our plates in Fusion Workshop and each student got his or her own plate. The result was really amazing. They were really so excited and happy while they were opening the boxestosee their plates.

6 INTERNATIONAL TASTES We organized 'The International Tastes Party' with Class 8-B. The whole class which consists of 27 students, prepared various tastes from Poland, Portugal, Italy, Croatia, Lithuania, Spain and Turkey's cuisines. They gathered and shared the cuisines. They cooked or made them at home and brought them to their class. The International Tastes Party was organized in Class 8-B. They were all very excited to taste and learn the way of their cooking or making. They learned one more thing about the European Folk Culture; it was about the kitchens of the countries. They found out the similarities and differences among us. As a result of this task, they all learned one more thing about folk cultures; the tastes of each other. They were really so happy to take part in this kind of Party

8 POTTERY WORKSHOP We organized a Pottery Workshop at our school, 50. Yil General Refet Bele Secondary School. 82 students were involved in this workshop. Mr Karya YILDIZ, the pottery artist of the Ministry of Culture introduced the pottery art in details. He said that making a pot is one of the mostimportant traditional art in our Folk Culture. He showed how to make small animals like cats, dinosaurs or swans in a very simple way. Then, he called each student and taught how to make a pot on the pottery-wheel using the wet red clay. He helped each student while they were trying to make his or her own pot. Finally, the pots were labelled with their name tags and put into the baskets. The students were really happy and excited while they were making their own pots. They were placed into the baskets because they were all made from wet red clay and they had to get them to be dried up in order to be furnaced in more or less 1100 or 1200 degrees Celcius. All the students have been looking forward to getting their pots.

10 THE LEGEND of MAIDEN S TOWER Maiden's Tower (KIZ KULESI) THE LEGEND of MAIDEN S TOWER Maiden's Tower (KIZ KULESI) is one of the romantic symbol of Istanbul. It constructed first in the 12th century and present building get dates from 18th century. KIZ KULESI is on a tiny bit islet at the entrance to Bosphorus, İstanbul. Islet's nearest land point is İstanbul's Üsküdar district at Asian side of the city, near Marmara Sea. This tower is part of famous İstanbul silhoutte and it catches everyone's eyes passing through Bosphorus by boat. This miniature tower has been in service as a lighthouse, a watchtower, a traffic control center and a prison in its lifetime and after it's restoration now it is open as a several flats tower for tourist attraction... an observation terrace, gift store, a small Bosphorus Museum, tea/coffee house and restaurant. According to the most widespread Turkish legend, a sultan has a daughter and he gets very happy. The Sultan appointes the scholars for growing the daughter of the country's knowledge. However, one of the soothsayers predicts the princess early death by a snake bite and says that when his daughter comes to the age of 18, she would be poisoned by a snake. The Sultan is affected by the prohecy of the soothsayer and decides to build a tower located on a small islet in the middle of the sea. He places the girls in the tower where only her father goes tovisit her regularly. So he thinks he would protect his daughter from the snake. 18 years pass, on the 18th birthday of the princess,,a basket of exotic lavish fruits is sent to the princess as a birthday present.despite of all the precautions taken by, a snake that hides among the fruit, poisons the young
