The member companies account for more than 20,000 jobs in the wood and furniture sector with an annual turnover of EUR 5.1 billion. The Danish Association of Upholsterer industry is the voice of the 150 Danish companies representing the industrial and the traditional side of the profession.. The participating companies account for approx. 500 jobs within the industry Developments/number of a apprentices in the respective trade On-going apprentices is about 200 On-going apprentices is about 25 Current employment prospects Demand for skilled employees in the respective trade if applicable, field of employment and principal place of employment There is a high demand for skilled employees, close to 2-3% unemployment Trends in transformation of qualifications New qualifications requirements, life-long learning/further training, changes in the respective job descriptions, acquisition of additional qualifications, etc. Supplementary training is a life-long possibility The department invites modern machine makers for thematic meetings a couple of times every year with about visitors

Trends in transformation of employment Diversification of activities / industry demand for skilled trades / crisis and job losses in the furniture industry, change of job, etc. We have had a long crisis in the woodworking and upholsterer business with the loss of many companies and jobs. The industry is still hurting, but there is hope. The Danish structure of a vocational education The vocational educations are carried out according to the interchange principle. I.e. the training interchanges between periods at work in a company and periods at the college. A vocational education is composed of a basic programme and a main programme. When you decide to start a vocational education, there are three approaches. Practical You sign an apprenticeship contract with a company and start your training by working in the company. Then you are called to attend the basic programme at the college. College You start directly with the basic programme. During or immediately after the basic programme, you need to sign a training agreement with a company in order to continue the education. You are employed and paid as an apprentice in the company, and the school will call you for the needed main programmes at school. New Apprentice The practical training starts in the company. New Apprentice replaces the whole of the basic programme and the first practical period. The duration is one year. The company and the institute offering your main programme agree on the contents of the New Apprentice course, including which learning competences is the responsibility of the company, and which learning competences the institute is expected to take care of. Basic Programme - Basic Programme packages What is a Basic Programme? There are different entrances to Basic Programmes. You can enter one of them, depending on the education you choose. Each leads to a number of similar educations.

When starting a Basic Programme you are taught together with others, who have chosen the same entrance option. At the end of the Basic Programme you are taught subjects targeted at your specific choice of education. All Basic Programmes start with a 2 weeks evaluation of you and your competences. Based on the evaluation and your wishes, a personal education plan is made. The education plan contains the subjects we can offer you and states an approximate duration of your Basic Programme Package. The duration of the Basic Programme is dependent on your competences (abilities) be that professional or personal and the competences you wish to widen, or improve. The Basic Programme is therefore divided into Basic Programme Packages. Skive Technical Institute offers several Basic Programme Packages, each being able to satisfy your abilities and wishes. The Basic Programme starts twice a year, August and January. The Main Programme In the main programme you specialize within a specific profession. In order to continue to the main programme, you are required to sign a training agreement with a company. After having signed the training agreement you will work and receive training in the company a part of your education and parts of your theoretical study period is done at the college. The duration of the Main Programme varies depending on the education you choose. It is your responsibility to sign an agreement with a company. We can assist you with information about vacant apprenticeships at the companies, as well as advice about applying for an apprenticeship and the regulations for these. Admission regulations If you are attending 9th or 10th grade (16yrs.), you can apply to Skive Technical Institute through the school you are attending. Others can seek admission directly at the institute. If you are more than 25 years old, there is an opportunity to sign an agreement as an adult apprentice. This means that you are paid a salary equivalent to the salary of unskilled workers within your field, and that the company is reimbursed some of the salary by the public paid a public grant to the salary. 21 Home decoration Upholsterer Do you dream of finding an old chair at the flea market and to redecorate it yourself? If you have the ability to combine shapes and colours, an education as upholsterer might be the right choice for you. Upholsterer is a fascinating and all-round job in which you will upholster new and old furniture and design new models according to a drawing. You will advise customers on types of fabrics and frames and must be able to design the furniture to the customer s special wishes and requirements. There are two paths you can choose: the traditional or the industrial. In the traditional upholstery, you will work with construction and renovation of furniture, both old classic as well as new architect developed furniture. In industrial upholstery you will work with upholstery of furniture with foam and plastic materials. A close co-operation with furniture designers developing new furniture can be established as well. To be an upholsterer you need to be clever with your hands and to have strong arms. Additionally, you need to be able to imagine the final result before the work with the furniture has even started. This is why you need a good sense of shapes and colours. The duration of the education is 4 years, including 50 weeks of theoretical education. Requirements You need to have: Passed 9 th or 10 th class in compulsory education for 7 to 16-year-olds To be flexible and clever with your hands a good sense of shapes, colours and details You and the institute are together responsible to find a work placement.

Course The first step is the basic course, building and construction, duration weeks. When you have completed the basic course and if you have got a training agreement with an approved company, you can start the main course. You should be able to measure, calculate materials, and when the curtains are produced, you must be able to sew, fit curtain ribbons and clasps. You must also be able to hang the finished curtains for example with string - or electrical pull. As a curtain decorator / curtain hanger you have a good chance to start your own business or curtain and home decoration shop. The duration of the education is 2 years and 9 months, including 40 weeks theoretical education. Requirements You need to have: Passed 9 th or 10 th class in compulsory education for 7- to 16-year-olds To be flexible and clever with your hands a good sense of shapes, colours and details

You and the institute are together responsible to find a work placement. Car upholsterer Do you dream of restoring a vintage car, or maybe make leather seats for a Jaguar, a Mercedes or perhaps a truck then the car upholsterer education may be the right choice for you. As a car upholsterer you contribute to adding the finishing touches to cars, trucks, trains and airplanes which make sure that the user gets a nice and pleasant experience. Therefore the car upholsterer works with models that will ensure that the seats are anatomically correct and top safety. As an educated car upholsterer you get a very independent and all-round job. You repair upholstery in cars, make hoods, tarpaulins, make sound insulation - and you can also get the job to design leather interiors in a BMW. To carry out these many tasks, you need to be clever with your hands and to have a good sense of shapes and colours. If you have the desire and abilities, you can get a job in an industry where independence and creativity are rewarded.

During your education, you learn to work with many different materials both box springs, foams, plastics, various textiles and leather. Work placements abroad If you are ambitious, you have the possibility to take a part of your apprenticeship in a company abroad. The school can help you with arranging a work placement abroad which gives you more experience and broadens your horizons. You get fully paid and your travel expenses will be covered. This fantastic set-up for students and companies is due to Arbejdsgivernes Uddannelsesbidrag, AUB (Employers Education Contribution). In recent years, students from our school have been in very different countries e.g. Hawaii, France, England and Sweden, so the possibilities are many. You will face many challenges as well, as you will experience a foreign country from inside. You will have many challenges as well, as you will experience a foreign country from inside. You will probably find out that some things are not carried out the way you are used to from home. Contact us If you and your company find the above interesting, you only need to contact Skive Technical Institute and we will help to establish contacts and assist with the paperwork. If you do not have a training agreement you can achieve your practical training abroad and get your education this way. However, this might be less attractive as you need to make your living. But please contact us and let us find out what can be done.
