3 Spanish Village Art Center 1770 Village Place, Studio #18 San Diego, Ca Jury & Membership Information Read before Completing Application Who we are: Spanish Village Art Center (SVAC) is a collection of working art studios established in 1938 by the San Diego City Council to make the creation of art visible to the public. SVAC continues today as a non-profit organization, relying on membership to participate in its direction and programs. Our agreement with the City of San Diego specifies that, in return for low rents, we have open studios where artists and craftspeople create and demonstrate their technique(s) to the public. We are required to work in the studios and are only privileged to sell our work. We must exhibit and sell only those works created in the medium (or media) accepted by the jurors. Eligibility: All artists living in San Diego County are eligible for membership in SVAC. Prospective members must provide the following information along with the application: 1. 3 small photographs representing the work to be judged. Those artists who are already SVAC members must submit photos of the new work to be judged. 2. Proof that the artist is at least 18 years of age; i.e. valid CA driver s license or ID card with a copy of the same. Make sure the birth date is legible in the copy. 3. Proof of residency in San Diego County (utility bill or other proof of residency) with a copy of the same. The Process: The jurying process helps SVAC select new members who will continue the high quality of fine art and crafts that SVAC is known for. Applicants do not compete against one another as there are openings in all media. Jurying occurs twice a year. A maximum of 40 applicants are accepted for each jurying. Application must be submitted with the non-refundable application fee of $35 ($25 for SVAC members). Only checks or money orders payable to SVAC will be accepted. NO CASH OR CREDIT CARDS. A separate application is required for each medium being juried as well as an additional $35.00 ($25 for SVAC Members) for each medium. You may request a receipt on jury day. Deliver the application and other required paperwork to Spanish Village Art Center studio shown above no later than 4:00 p.m. on the submission date indicated above. It is recommended that the application be delivered in person as the mail system within Balboa Park is slow. Acceptable media: See below for a list of acceptable media. If an artist s medium is not on this list, Jury Chair should be contacted via at svacjury@yahoo.com for medium consideration. The jury committee reserves the right to change the listed category on or before the jury day. If a change occurs, the artist will be notified. If you are not contacted by the Jury Chair within two weeks of the Jury Date, please send an to svacjury@yahoo.com and spanishvillageartcenter@ymail.com requesting information on the status of your application. Submission Guidelines for Jury Day: 1. Submit five (5) of your best pieces for each medium that you wish to have considered. Work made from kits, patterns, or commercial molds, or the assemblies of commercial beads on a string or wire with no unique artist s vision are not acceptable. 5. Do not submit copies of another artist s work as this infringes on natural copyright laws and may infringe on registered copyrights. Doing so puts both the artist and SVAC at risk and will void your membership. 6. Do not submit unfinished, soiled, worn, torn, or broken examples of your work. Jurors: There are three (3) jurors. They are NOT members of SVAC but are professionals in various fields of art and fine crafts. Your work must be accepted by two of the three jurors to qualify for membership. The judges decision is final. Work will be judged on the following criteria: Originality Technique/ craftsmanship Design/composition Consistency Presentation Displaying your work: Remember that presentation (especially for three-dimensional work) is one of the criteria that will be judged. All two-dimensional work must be framed and finished appropriately on the back. Gallery wrapped canvases may be unframed but must be finished on all sides. In the jury room, framed work and gallery wrapped canvases are set against the wall. Do not bring easels or display boards. Tables (6 feet x 2.5 feet) are supplied for three-dimensional work. You must bring your own cloth, case, risers, etc. to display your work. You may have the use of either one-half or a whole table depending on the number of applicants, so plan to be flexible. The process on Jury Day: 1. Location for the current jury is noted on the top of page Plan to arrive by 9:00 a.m. to set-up your display. 3. Display must be set before the Jurors arrive at 10:00 a.m. 4. Late arrivals will be turned away. 5. Please do not walk around the jury room to observe other artists work. 6. The committee will tell you what time to return to pick up your work. Usually it is 2:00 p.m. but it can vary with the number of applicants being juried. All work must be picked up by 4 p.m. 7. Accepted work is photographed as displayed. Photos are attached to the artist s application for SVAC records. 8. WHEN YOU RETURN TO THE JURY ROOM, THE RESULTS WILL BE IN AN ENVELOPE IN FRONT OF YOUR WORK. YOU WILL IMMEDIATELY KNOW WHETHER YOU HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED. If your work is not accepted: Please review the jurors evaluation sheets to see where they feel your work can improve. Many of our members have had work not accepted at the first jurying, so please try again. We make every effort to have different jurors each time to provide various points of view. The Jury Chair can tell you when the applications will be available for the next jurying or please go to our website. Juries occur twice a year, usually in March and September. If your work is accepted: 1. You must complete ALL paperwork and pay your Membership Fee by 4 p.m. on Jury Day or you will need to rejury. 2. You will receive an acceptance packet of important information with the acceptance letter. 3. The forms included with the letter must be completed prior to leaving the jury room. Jury Committee members will be available to answer any questions you may have. 4. Turn in your completed forms along with a check for your annual SVAC membership dues. This fee is separate from the jury application fee and may be a prorated amount of the annual SVAC membership dues depending 5/30/2018 Page 4 of 8
