1 Dr James Stewart, PhD, MSc, BEng, MIET Sept 2013 OVERVIEW James Stewart is a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for the Study of Science, Technology and Innovation in the University of Edinburgh. He is returning to Edinburgh after three year leave of absence working as a research scientist/administrator at the JRC-IPTS, European Commission. Areas of expertise James works in the field of technology and innovation studies. This work brings social science theories to bear on issues of technology development, diffusion and policy. His research and teaching covers a range of themes in areas of relevance to most the major collaborations of the Science, Technology and Innovation Studies Unit including innovation in the Digital Media and ICT sectors, design and policy in informatics and telecommunications, social and employment policy, health and care policy, intellectual property, and renewable energy. His skill and experience enables him to integrate technical knowledge and understanding with social science methods and insights. This has been applied in both 'pure' social research and collaborative research with researchers and non-researchers from many disciplines. This is also reflected in teaching delivered to students in disciplines included sociology, design, cultural studies and engineering. Research James has a broad range of research experience, focusing on contemporary challenges in the social shaping of technology, contributing to the theoretical domain of Edinburgh social shaping/social learning approach, especially the incorporation of the role of users and intermediaries in explanations of sociotechnical change. He has developed new interdisciplinary research areas and lines, informed by emerging empirical developments, theory, and policy demands. This involved addressing the methodological challenges of distributed research domains, and use of multiple primary sources. Examples of research include the development of a research by design methodology in collaboration with colleagues in Informatics and the College of Art (e.g. Branded Meeting places project), in-depth research on business and technical change in collaboration with industry partners (FLOWS project), mixed method online survey-case study-qualitative interview method (Web2.0 in UK research project) and multi-case, multi-country study research with other social science researchers (SIGIS project). At the JRC-IPTS he was responsible for identifying emerging research areas, and specifying, 1
2 James Stewart commissioning and managing research by teams of researchers from multiple disciplines. James has worked combining conventional and digital research methods his entire career. Teaching James has taught postgraduate and undergraduate courses on Innovation, ICTs, the Information society and the politics and sociology of the Internet. He took over as convenor of the post-graduate course Social Shaping of ICTs in 1998, continually updating the course, and recruiting new guest lecturers. He developed and delivered the Internet and Society course over 5 years. James also gives invited lectures in postgraduate courses in Digital Design, Cultural studies, Engineering and Informatics. These courses establish the basis for development of new teaching incorporating both new issues and research, that can be delivered to student groups where these issues continue to become ever more important. From mid-2000s these courses incorporated online learning methods and tools, using wikis, blogs, shared student produced material and social media services. James recent research on use of digital game approaches offers interesting futures pathways to support learning. From 2002 James has been a student research supervisor, for MSc and Honours projects, and as first and second supervisor for PhD students. This includes 5 PhDs, 2 M.Res, many MSc on topics including the culture of Facebook to use, Chinese technology policy, open source development communities, and Twitter in political protest, many of which used digital, online primary sources. Administration James work at JRC-IPTS involved administration of research grants, including running tendering processes up to 120K, recruitment of staff, and organisation of workshops. In 1996 he was co-organiser of a major industryacademic conference on Interactive Television. Impact James work has had impact in many ways, through conventional academic publishing, in research for policy at a European and UK level, with industry users and collaborators, in interdisciplinary research, and through teaching. For example, the CARICT project on ICTs and Long Term care had direct impact on policy documents at the European Commission, the FLOWS project was disseminated to industry through conference and participation in industry working groups, and the research on Web2.0 and digital infrastructures in science contributed to report for decision makers in the UK research community. James has experience in running many different styles of workshops and conferences that aim not only to present academic work, but also engage with 2
3 and communicate with academic, policy, civil society and business audiences on topics of contemporary concern. Recent work at both ISSTI and JRC-IPTS has focused on addressing topics of interest to policy, building stakeholder and expert consensus, and communicating research results to policy makers. James has published number of research articles submitted to the REF, numerous book chapters, and conference papers. In James also lead a (failed) initiative to develop a Living Lab in Scotland and in the University of Edinburgh, as a way of linking research and teaching in the field of ICT applications to industrial and user stakeholders, a project that attempted to turn research insights into productive infrastructures. SPECIFIC SKILLS Interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary research in technology studies. Qualitative Research (interviewing, including senior industry and policy actors, and end users; analysis of qualitative data) Research planning and administration Teaching Postgraduate and undergraduate across disciplines PhD and MSc student supervision Organising and chairing academic and non-academic workshops and conferences Publishing scientific papers in international journals Writing reports for policy makers IT skills, including web site management, and tools for blended learning.
