1 Curriculum-Based Workshops Mad Science is the World s Leading Science Enrichment Provider Mad Science is proud to introduce children to a world of discovery while sparking imaginative learning. It is our vision to encourage scientific literacy in an age when science is as vital as reading, writing and arithmetic. Our mission is to deliver unique, educational, hands-on science experiments for students and their teachers. During our interactive, half-day workshops highly trained instructors will present quality workshops that meet the expectations of the Ontario Science and Technology Curriculum. Life Systems Structures & Mechanisms Matter and Energy Earth & Space Systems Book a Mad Scientist in Your School Today! Workshops are presented to one class at a time 30-child maximum per School Age Workshop 24-child maximum per Kindergarten Workshop All Workshops are a half-day in Length. Payment is expected on the day old your event. You should hear from a Mad Science lab coat wearing representative within 24-hours of your request. $150/workshop+HST ~ Morning or afternoon classes ~ Travel fees may apply ~ barrie.madscience@gmail.com Ontario Curriculum Workshops Grade 1 BODY BASICS (Life Systems) Blood, guts and more will be explored in this thrilling workshop about the human body. Through a series of hands-on experiments, students will discover the ooey gooey truth about their digestive, muscular and respiratory systems. Following discussions about the five senses, students will experience what life would be like without their sense of sight. Children will identify what is different and the same between humans, other mammals and plants.
2 ENERGY IN OUR LIVES (Matter & Energy) Students will be energized as they investigate various forms of energy and the paramount importance each plays in the survival of all forms. In this stimulating, hands-on workshop students will learn that solar energy is the principal source of energy and will be introduced to the wacky world of potential and kinetic energy. Using ultraviolet beads, children will make a UV Keychain to alert them when they should be wearing sun protection. Everyone will be blown away when we reveal the wonders of wind energy. MAD MATERIALS & SPECTACULAR STRUCTURES (Structures & Mechanisms) As Junior Engineers, students will build structures and identify the cool shapes used to provide strength and stability. Using their five senses, students will gather information about secret mixtures and guess what materials were used in creating them. In the second half of this fun, hands-on workshop, Junior Engineers will identify the cool shapes used to provide strength and stability to the structures around them. Children will identify three common building materials and will put a favourite structure through the ultimate stress test. MAD SEASONS (Earth & Space Systems) Your students will all want to be meteorologists after discovering the scientific wonders of weather. During this fun workshop, students will discover the important role weather plays in everyday life. They will discover how they can prepare for seasonal changes and will never again question why they have to wear this and can t wear that. Children will identify days, months, and years and will understand why each cycle occurs. Ontario Curriculum Workshops Grade 2 ANIMAL CHANGES (Life Systems) Throughout this interactive workshop, the wild and wonderful world of the Animal Kingdom will be explored. Students will discover how their favourite creatures grow and change throughout the animal s life. A Series of awesome experiments will enable children to identify the various ways animals adapt and survive in their environments. We will take a bite out of the mystery of teeth and beaks. Students will make comparisons between their own life cycle and the life cycle of plants and animals. MAD ABOUT MATTER (Matter & Energy) As Junior Scientists, students will explore the three states of matter - solid, liquid and gas. Your students will be amazed to discover water can exist a each state of matter. As the children pour and mix liquids they will gain a greater understanding of the concepts of buoyancy and density. Reinforcing the importance of safety in the home and school, we will identify product warning symbols. MOVING MACHINES (Structures & Mechanisms) Levers, inclined planes, pulleys, screws, wedges, wheel & axles - simple machines every Junior Engineer will need to know. Through a series of hands-on experiments, students will gain an understanding of the nuts and bolts for each simple machine and will be able to identify examples around them. Gravity and friction will all be put through a Mad Science test as children work together using inclined planes. ESSENTIAL AIR & WATER (Earth & Space Systems) Balloons, ping pong balls and an AirZooka will demonstrate the mighty power of the wind. The mysteries of crazy weather will be revealed as children explore the properties of air and water. During this interactive workshop, students will identify the paramount significance water plays in their everyday lives. As they examine
3 the water cycle, students will be thrilled to see it rain in their classroom. The great forces of water and air will be captured and trapped as students construct their own Pet Tornado. Ontario Curriculum Workshops Grade 3 PHOTOSYNTHESIS (Life Systems) Students will grin from ear to ear as they unravel the mysteries of photosynthesis. In this fun and hands-on workshop, students will investigate the relationship between plants, the Earth and human life. While examining micro-slides, children will be able to identify the major parts of a plant. Following this enlightening workshop, students will watch a seed they planted in a soil-less environment, thrive and grow into a thing of beauty. MAKE IT MOVE (Matter & Energy) Move it, move it, move it! The mighty forces of gravity, inertia and friction will be tested in this motivating workshop. Students will investigate which forces come into play as they start, stop, attract, repel and change direction of an object. They will be amazed to discover the ways in which forces affects the operation of everyday devices. Through a series of hands-on experiments, the wonders of potential and kinetic energy will be revealed. Students will understand how energy can be stored and released to create movement. Everyone will construct a cool device that moves using static electricity. SUPER STRONG STRUCTURES (Structures & Mechanisms) Squares, triangles, cylinders, domes and arches will all be explored as we introduce students to the super strong world of structures. While building a bridge together, students will gain valuable experience asking and solving important structural issues. Through a series of cool hands-on experiments, students will identify building materials best suited for specific structures. Children will discover which forces are acting on a structure. Everyone will construct an amazing 3-D Cube which will be put through a Mad Science strength test. Ontario Curriculum Workshops Grade 4 MINERAL MANIA (Earth & Space Systems) During this fun and interactive workshop, the stone cold truth of how igneous metamorphic and sedimentary rocks are formed will be revealed. During an amusing demonstration, Junior Mineralogists will discover how rocks are classified. Using the Moh s Hardness Scale and a variety of minerals, students will test, observe and record their findings. Panning for gems will excite all thrill seekers. Peeling back the layers, students will expose the earth s core, mantle and crust and reproduce an exciting volcanic eruption. HABITATS & COMMUNITIES (Life Systems) Home sweet healthy home! During this environmentally friendly workshop, students will discover that a healthy habitat is paramount for the survival of all plants and animals. Students will be amazed to learn how even small changes in the environment have an impact on every life form. Through a series of cool experiments, children will discover why all habitats have limits to the number of species they can support. Secrets of the food chain will be unlocked and students will classify organisms according to their placement in the food chain. Students will learn the difference between carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. We will explore the various ways animals adapt to their environment. PURPOSEFUL PULLEYS & GROOVEY GEARS
4 (Structures & Mechanisms) The wonders of pulleys and gears will be explored in this fun and interactive workshop. Through a series of Push me, Pull me experiments students will test how various pulley systems help move objects, lift heavy loads and overcome friction. In the second half of our groovy workshop, children will investigate gears and learn how a worm can turn a gear, but how a gear cannot turn a worm. There will be no backpedaling once students discover how they can make a bicycle go faster. Children will be amazed to realize the role gears play in converting kinetic energy from wind energy into mechanical energy. LIGHT & SOUND ENERGY (Matter & Energy) We will shine a beacon of light and sing a song for sound in this entertaining workshop. We will expose light and sound as forms of energy that travel in waves. Using a Mad Science radiometer, children will be amazed to discover that light energy can move an object. Children will conduct tests on different materials to determine how they interact differently with light, and be able to identify each as opaque, transparent or translucent. Ontario Curriculum Workshops Grade 5 EXCELLENT ENERGY (Earth & Space Systems) Students will be amazed during this stimulating workshop, as they discover the diverse forms energy may take and identify examples from everyday life. Through a series of lively experiments, children will test the Law of Conservation of Energy, proving energy cannot be created or destroyed, only changed. Students will explore a variety of ways to convert one type of energy into another. Your children will discover that the earth s energy is limited and will be able to identify renewable and non-renewable sources. CHANGE MATTERS (Matter & Energy Systems) During exciting and interactive demonstrations, students will be able to answer the age-old question...what s matter? Frosty dry ice and hot melting metal will be used to illustrate the changes that can occur to matter. Evaporation, condensation and sublimation are three awe-inspiring words students won t soon forget. Children will be amazed to discover the differences between physical and chemical changes. Through a series of cool hands-on experiments, students will test how chemicals interact when combined. We will light up the classroom with an astonishing indoor fireworks display. FORCES ACTING UP (Structures & Mechanisms) Bridges, arches, beams trusses and suspensions - oh yeah! Your students will be introduced to four types of structures. As the forces of tension and compression act up, students will discover the affects they have on structures. Throughout a series of experiments, students will identify what materials are required to withstand both misbehaving forces. Children will recognize the difference between a dead and live load. Children will build an amazing Model Truss Bridge, marking the areas where tension or compression is evident. Ontario Curriculum Workshops Grade 6 UNIVERSITY OF DIVERSITY (Life Systems) Graduates of the University of Diversity will have a clear understanding of bio-diversity and preservation strategies. During this fun and interactive workshop the mystery of classification systems will be revealed as children put animals in their place. Close to home, students will investigate the breathtaking impact an invading species, Zebra Mussels, had on Ontario lakes. Children will investigate the characteristics of
5 living things and explore the benefits bio-diversity has on the human species. Using microslides, students will take a closer look at eight common types of bacteria. ELECTRIFYING SCIENCE (Matter & Energy) Students will be ecstatic when they discover the secrets of current and static electricity. In this fun and engaging workshop children will learn how various forms of energy can be transformed into electrical energy. During a series of shocking, hands-on experiments children will test materials to identify good conductors and poor conductors. Junior Electricians will investigate the components of a circuit while testing electric circuits and the concept of electricity as flowing electrons. As newly formed information magnets, student will create a Circuit Board Quiz Game to challenge their families. AIR & AERODYNAMICS (Structures & Mechanisms) The wonders of pulleys and gears will be explored in this fun and interactive workshop. Through a series of experiments, children will discover air pressure and Bernoulli s Principle. The wonders of flight, lift, drag, propulsion and gravity will all be revealed. Everyone will be amazed as they witness a classmate levitate above the floor. Children will put their new found knowledge of flight to the ultimate test as they construct a Flying Football Plane and a Bernoulli Disc. SPACE SPECTACULAR (Earth & Space Systems) Out of this world! Junior Astronauts will take a space journey through the solar system identifying planets, comets and meteors. During this hands-on workshop students will use models to identify the relative size of the planets and the distances between each. Through a series of unique experiments students will discover the shocking truth about how astronauts meet their basic needs while living and working in space. Students will identify the moon as a natural satellite and understand the evolution of man-made satellites. Your young stargazers will construct a map of the skies, identifying the stars and planets visible throughout the year. Ontario Curriculum Workshops Junior/Senior Kindergarten JUNIOR SCIENTISTS (Kindergarten) Space, dinosaurs, colour and what-happens-when-you-mix-this-with-that will be explored in this fun and interactive workshop. Everyone loves an old-fashion volcanic explosion and we promise not to disappoint! As well, working as paleontologists, children will participate in a dinosaur dig and will discover the differences between meat eating and plant eating dinosaurs. We will investigate rainbows and reveal the wonders of colour. Students will take a class trip through the solar system and will participate in a moon rock relay race. SEEKING OUR SENSES (Kindergarten) Children will investigate the five senses and discover how each sense can teach them about their world. Scented canisters will tickle noses and dancing cereal will tap toes. Using a magnifying glass, students will check up on what s what with everyday items. Our Wacky Wave Motion Model will move sound and students will feel the music in them as they groove to our Guitar Boxes. While examining a Mystery in a Sock, children will identify objects using only their sense of touch. We will then keep little hands busy as children model their very own special creation. BUGS, BUGS & MORE BUGS (Kindergarten) Everyone will want to be an Entomologist after half a day of bug exploration! The fabulous world of bugs will be revealed with amazing, hands-on experiments. Children will see the world through a bug s eye and will answer the great question, How do teeny, tiny bugs survive in such a big world? when they check out a bug s defensive moves. Children will forever high five bugs once we identify the paramount role insects play in our environment. Students will play a cool game of Bug Bingo and will sing the praises of their new bug friends. MAGNETS & THINGS THAT STICK (Kindergarten)
6 During this stimulating workshop, students will visit the north and south poles. We guarantee that you will not hear any static as children investigate the properties of magnetized materials. Everyone will get a charge out of passing common household items through our Mad Science Magnetic Test. During a series of stick-to tests, the sticky power of magnets and Velcro will be explored. Cheers will erupt when we investigate magnetic fields. AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS! We have two different programs to choose from, both are 8 weeks in length, and both include a weekly take-home activity that gets kids talking about science! We make science FUN!! Extraordinary Laboratory Description Watts-Up!? Learn about electricity, its properties and its role in natural phenomena. Make indoor lightning while conducting hair-raising experiments with our electro-static generator... Lights, Colour, Action! Uncover the hidden components in ordinary light and build your own Newton's color wheel to prove it. Attend a spectacular chemical energy display, and witness the splendour of indoor fireworks! Slime Explore the exciting world of polymers, the chemical reactions we use to create them and the inner workings of silly putty. Transform two regular liquids into an oozing batch of your very own slime... Optical Illusions Build your own periscope while learning about optics, reflection and sight. Watch celebrity images change before your very eyes! Seeing is not always believing... Magnetic Magic Investigate the powers and daily uses of magnets. Test for electro magnetic fields and then use what you have learned to build your own electro magnet... Harnessing Heat Witness a mini rocket launch while learning the properties of heat. Change the states of matter, turn solid candy into floss and make your very own cotton candy! Tantalizing Taste Experiment with taste sensations while "mapping" out your tongue.
