Kakha Shengelia, who will be promoted to Honorary Doctor later, was also elected Honorary Doctor of TUT. The new Honorary Doctors of TUT have provided an extraordinary contribution to the development and internationalization of research in TUT. Prof Kalevi Edvard Ekman was one of the first persons in the world, who launched systematic interdisciplinary projects in the university with engineering, business and design students. He is a Professor of Integrated Product Development in Aalto University and Head of Aalto Design Factory. Ekman is a member of the Finnish Academy of Technology, Heureka Science Centre, Finnish Design Management Association and the Foundation for Finnish Inventions, winner of Otaniemi international innovation award. He has helped to develop the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of TUT and involved students and researchers in international cooperation. Krõõt Nõges, press secretary of TUT Hardi Meybaum is TUT Alumnus of the Year 2013 Hardi Meybaum is the Tallinn University of Technology (TUT) Alumnus of the Year TUT announced the Alumnus of the Year 2013 at the university s 95th anniversary ceremony. The ceremony also included 67 doctoral and six honorary doctoral promotions. A bust of Estonian Academy of Sciences Member Uno Mereste was also opened in the 17th of September 2013 on the Academicians Alley of the university. Hardi Meybaum graduated in 2005 from the TUT Faculty of Mechanical Engineering specializing in product development and received in 2007 a MSc degree in production engineering at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. Meybaum is currently the CEO and a co-founder of the international company GrabCAD. GrabCAD is a company specializing in software development for engineers, with headquarters in Boston (USA) and development offices in Tallinn and Cambridge, England. Hardi Meybaum said: This award is a great recognition for me personally, for the GrabCAD team and for all the engineers who use GrabCAD. GrabCAD would not have been possible without the education received from TUT and, without it, hundreds of thousands of engineers would spend hours on unproductive tasks, which would not create value for the finished products used by all.

Mechanical Engineering Newsletter, October /8 GrabCAD helps manufacturing companies to place better products on the market in shorter periods. GrabCAD.com is an online collaboration platform, enabling engineers, production managers and all other parties in the manufacturing process to share CAD files, communicate and use design software in the GrabCAD environment. GrabCAD is used globally by over 800,000 engineers, from a small manufacturing company in Jüri, Estonia, to General Electric. GrabCAD is currently regarded as the most innovative company in the engineering world and has entered into a technology partnership with such industry giants as Autodesk and Siemens. The international team of GrabCAD includes some of the world s best people in their field, as well as investors who are behind the creation of many successful companies, such as PTC, Solidworks, Paypal, Free Markets, Yammer, Kiva Systems, and Skype. Before his current job, Meybaum has worked for Columbus IT Partner Estonia and Saku Metall. TUT has selected Alumni of the Year since Previous recipients of the award include Tiit Vähi, Jaak Leimann, Toomas Sõmera, Toomas Luman, Jüri Mõis, Indrek Neivelt, Gunnar Okk, Toomas Annus, Väino Kaldoja, Tiina Mõis, Tarmo Noop, Valdo Kalm, Erkki Raasuke, Sandor Liive, Veiko Sepp, Andres Allikmäe and Hannes Tamjärv. Krõõt Nõges, press secretary of TUT The new device of jet milling technology at the Department of Materials Engineering The Jet mill is designed for pulverizing powder materials by compressed gas jets; therefore powder collides and is classified through filtering system. The mill has to be able to micronize variety of raw materials, including non-flowable and light-weight starting powders. The milling unit is equipped with feeding unit. The main advantage of the jet mill compared to other milling methods is that the powders will not be contamined (by wear products of milling equipment). In the jet mill the powder particles collide only with the other particles of the powder to be treated. The jet milling technology will be used at the Department of Materials Engineering mainly for milling of magnetic alloys (based on NdFeB). It is essential to avoid the contamination of the powder with free iron (which is typical for ball- and attritor milling). Jet milling technology is used widely in pharmacy and other industries where ultra-pure, chemically active powders are mixed, milled and separated. As the carrier gas argon, nitrogen are used. Also air can be used if the powders are not prone to oxidation. The milling chamber is made of plastic (PTFE), the device is easy to be cleaned, the feeding nozzles are interchangeable. The system is provided by Micro-Macinazione SA, Switzerland

Mechanical Engineering Newsletter, October /8 The opening of the sixth academic building of the Tallinn University of Technology ends the corporation of university buildings in the Mustamäe campus Krõõt Nõges On September 5th a new building of the Tallinn University of Technology was opened the sixth building. A four-storey combustion test hall, laboratories for tribology and powder metallurgy, new types of solar panels, automotive engineering research laboratories, design and engineering studios, renewed student formulas and robots are situated there. This is the first part of the investment project. During the course of the project, the fifth building will also be renovated, in addition to construction of the sixth building. The whole project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund, in the sum of almost 13 million euros. Support for the University is mediated by the Archimedes Foundation. The new building is primarily a research building, where researchers, graduate and doctoral students of the TUT Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, but also Faculty of Chemical and Materials Technology will work. The dean of the TUT Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Tauno Otto, singles out better research opportunities and better time management: "Students will gain significant amount of time the old school building in Kopli was nearly 13 km away from the Mustamäe Campus." The new building encompasses the Department of Thermal Engineering, Department of Materials Engineering, and Department of Machinery of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering as well as the Department of Materials Science of the Faculty of Chemical and Materials Technology. The TUT Robotics Club, Formula Student Team Tallinn and the Student Council of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering have moved to the new premises as well. There is a test hall (so-called Thermal Engineering Cathedral) covering four floors of the Department of Thermal Engineering. Modern test-stand research can be conducted there (combustion processes and heat-related research) in order to reduce miscalculations in heating plants design and construction. An effective, efficient and well-controlled ventilation system has been built into the technological laboratories of the Department of Materials Engineering. The heat of the high-tech equipment with great heat isolation is conducted to the central cooling system. Rooms are equipped with process gases, specialty gases and compressed air pipe systems. In the Department of Machinery, the automotive engineers can work in the new acoustics lab with a full-sized acoustic stand, which, thanks to the room s exceptional acoustic insulation, does not disturb the neighbours. Students and doctoral students of the international master's program "Materials and processes of Sustainable Energetics" in the TUT Faculty of Chemical and Materials Technology participate in developing new materials for solar panels in the research laboratories of the Department of Materials Science, and cooperate closely with researchers of the Department Thermal Engineering in studying sustainable energy, in addition to the Faculty s traditional research on oil shale. The building has approximately 13,000 square meters of useful area; the volume of the building is about 62,000 cubic meters. The completion of the building means that all of TUT is located on the Mustamäe University campus. The old (sixth) building was so run-down that it was reasonable to build a new building with new infrastructure for research purposes. New research equipment has also been acquired via different investment projects. The old building was demolished and the new and modern research building was built in its place. The architect of the building is Velle Kadalipp, and the builder is Skanska AS. The building is located on the TUT campus, Ehitajate tee 5, Tallinn.

Mechanical Engineering Newsletter, October /8 Season ending of FS Team Tallinn Laure Oras Another season is yet again over for FS Team Tallinn and, therefore, it is time to sum it up. This time we managed to participate in two competitions: in Finland in the beginning of August and in Hungary some weeks later. We also planned to take part in Formula Student Austria but due to major technical difficulties, we were forced to stick to mere observing and spying. The unofficial competition of Baltic Open was held from August 8th to 11th in Helsinki, Finland. There, only dynamic events are held and the teams are allowed to bring their oldtimers as well. So, we took our three formulas: the FEST08, the FEST10 and our last internal combustion formula FEST12. Our newest formula that is powered by electricity was unfortunately not completed in time. Despite some smaller or bigger technical difficulties we can still say that the race was a success. We managed to secure overall first place and grant ourselves the right for Baltic Open Estonia The FEST08 and the FEST10 were respectively the 12th and the 9th in overall ranking. The 2nd and 3rd place were occupied by KA-Racing and Dart Racing from Germany. In the other half of August, our national holiday (20th of August) to be exact, we took off to get to Györ- Gönyu harbor in Hungary with our newest electrical formula. It was the fourth time that Formula Student Hunagry was held. Last year among numerous diplomas we managed to get the trophy that had "Champions" written on it. This year, however, we had to settle for less and only received a diploma for the 2nd place in acceleration. Our biggest achievement was actually getting to the competitions at all. Even the scrutineering took us more than two days although usually it has been more of a matter of hours. Despite the difficulties we were successful at last and, hence, were granted permission to get on track and set time in almost every dynamic event except for the endurance. That we did not manage to finish because with just 2.5 laps left out of 36 we were forced to quit. Our battery packs had overheated and the cells were corrupt. Therefore, we had no business in Formula Student Austria. However, we still decided to take a closer look to try and gain some vital information. But now, as every autumn, we are renewing our team. Check out for more information or find us in Facebook. So, if you are interested in joining us, remember: next year we will be the Champions!

Mechanical Engineering Newsletter, October /8 Workshop Responsive Robotic Materialization Professor Mart Tamre Workshop Responsive Robotic Materializations took place Aug. 26th to 30th (2013) in the labs of the Department of Mechatronics and in Mektory building (Raja 15) as the joint project of three universities (Tallinn University of Technology, Estonian Academy of Arts and University of Innsbruck). Practical activity was made in three groups with students from different fields of research, mechatronics, architecture and design. The aim of the workshop was to study and test new technologies for creating future structural design components, which could combine the process of creating natural and human friendly pattern with current material and information technology new possibilities and with use of sensor, microcontroller and robot technology means in these unique structures. Workshop tested and investigated utilization possibilities of creating future nonrecurring and fibrous structural elements for design and architectural applications. Structure of this kind of materials is analogous to natural and human surrounding environment structures and sensors integrated into these structures enable to change some of their properties according to changes in the surrounding environment or human behavior automatically. This way these structures will become a natural and smart and interactive components of future environment. Students from the TUT Department of Mechatronics were assigned to make the behavior of the material observable by specific sensors, cameras and software when the structure was created. They also had to introduce feedback to the motion of the industrial robot to yield as consistent fibrous or any other predefined structure as possible. Harnessing industrial robots made it possible to create in one hand certain predefined dimensions for these structures and in other hand to allow other dimensions to be formed freely creating thus unique structure in certain directions. Students were supervised by the researchers Maido Hiiemaa and Ahti Põlder from TUT Department of Mechatronics, researchers from the Institute for Experimental Architecture of the University of Innsbruck and Estonian Academy of Arts. The outcomes of the workshop are being exhibited in the Tallinn Architecture Biennale (TAB) Sept. 4th to 30th (2013). Creating new material structure, controlling robot, saving sensor signals and programming microcontroller. Future material structural component with integrated sensors
