No. Speaker Biography 1 John Thomas Dr. John Thomas is a Research Engineer at MIT, developing engineering analysis techniques for complex systems in nuclear, chemical, oil & gas, automotive, and aerospace industries. Prior to his doctoral studies, he earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Computer Engineering and worked in industry specializing in system engineering and requirements development. 2 Maria Mikela Chatzimichailidou Mrs. Maria Mikela Chatzimichailidou is a Research Associate in Patient Safety in the NHS at the Department of Engineering in the University of Cambridge. She studied Production Engineering and Management and holds a Master degree in Systems Engineering. Her overall research develops around Safety and Awareness in safety-critical socio-technical systems. 3 John Stoop Dr. John Stoop deals with accident investigation methodology. He has experience as investigator and is member of the International Society of Air Safety Investigators, the European Safety and Reliability Data Association and the Resilience Engineering Association. He is a guest professor in the universities of Lund, TU Delft and Applied Sciences in Amsterdam. 4 Nazaret Lopez Nazaret López is an operation engineer at Tecnatom, an international company that provides services to the nuclear industry. She studied Chemical Engineering and she holds a Master s Degree in Power Generation Technologies. Since she joined Tecnatom team in 2010 she has focused on human factors engineering and alarm analysis.
2 5 Yasuhiko Kawabe Mr Yasuhiko Kawabe is the director of Japan MOT Society and he worked for Nissan Motor Company in both Japan and Europe. He studied transportation systems for vehicles and he led the Safety Risk group in the Society Laboratory. He studies the application of STAMP to human safety. 6 Asim Abdulkhaleq Asim Abdulkhaleq is a research assistant and Ph.D candidate at the institute of software technology at the University of Stuttgart. He holds a MSc in Information Technology and a BSc. in Computer Science. Mr. Abdulkhaleq is responsible for developing an automatic tool support for STAMP safety analysis for software-intensive system. 7 Stephen Johnson After graduating in Chemical Engineering, Stephen has spent his career in the Energy and chemicals business, the bulk of it in process safety related activities. He has conducted various kinds of risk engineering and consequence modelling in up & down-stream hydrocarbons, specialty and agricultural chemicals. 8 Anastasios Plioutsias He is PhD candidate in Aviation Risk Management in the Industrial Management and Operational Research department of the National Technical University of Athens. He graduated from the Hellenic Air Force Academy and hols a diploma in Business Administration. He is F-16 fighter pilot and safety instructor. 9 Dahlia Oueidat Dahlia Oueidat holds a BSc in mathematics and a MSc in engineering of systems for risk prevention. Dahlia joined the Centre for Research on Risk and Crises (CRC) Laboratory at Sophia Antipolis where she's actually doing basic research and PhD study on risk analysis and accident prevention models for the oil and gas industry.
3 10 David Passenier Before starting a PhD on safety culture in aviation organizations, David Passenier completed a research master in social science and a bachelor degree in organizational anthropology. At age 17 he obtained his Private Pilot License, which he uses regularly to fly general aviation planes. He teaches various organizational science courses. 11 Osiris Valdez Banda He is a research scientist in the field of winter navigation risk and safety at the Aalto University in Finland. His work primarily aims at developing methods for analysing the risk and safety management of ship navigation operations, in particular the assessment of safety and risk management systems implemented to support ship operations. 12 Daniel Montes Dan Montes is a PhD student in the MIT Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He has served 12 years in the U.S. Air Force as a defence-research program manager and flight tester. Dan is interested in the performance and safety of complex systems with skilled-operator cultures. 13 Rob Hoitsma Rob Hoitsma is incident investigator at NedTrain, the train maintenance department of Dutch Railways. He investigates incidents with human factors insights and promotes Safety II thinking by management. He started using STAMP to understand the role and thinking of management in incidents and using this to discuss and influence this thinking.
4 14 Jan Maggot Dr. Jan Magott received MSc. in 1975, PhD. in 1978, habilitation in 1989 in Computer Engineering. He occupies the professor position in Wroclaw University of Technology in Poland. His main research interests in last ten years are concentrated on formal methods in power systems, air and rail transport safety engineering. 15 Svana Helen Bjornsdottir Svana Helen Björnsdóttir holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the Technical University in Darmstadt, Germany. She founded STIKI Software Company 1992 and was the CEO of STIKI until 2013 when she became the executive chair of the company. Svana is also a PhD student at Reykjavik University. 16 Mitchel Pappot Mitchel Pappot graduated from the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences where he received his Bachelor of Engineering with honours. Mitchel s graduation research focussed on the safety aspect of professional drone operations. Upon graduation he started working for the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences as a lecturer in physics of flight. 17 Sven Stefan Krauss 18 Nektarios Karanikas Sven Stefan Krauss, MBA is senior research associate in the safety critical systems research group at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW), Switzerland. He is TÜV Rheinland certified Functional Safety Engineer and studied Computer Engineering and International Business Management at Hochschule Furtwangen University (HFU) in Germany. Dr. Nektarios Karanikas is Associate Professor of Safety and Human Factors in the Aviation Academy of Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. He holds a doctorate in Safety & Quality Management, an MSc in Human Factors and Safety Assessment and a BSc in Aircraft Engineering. He leads a funded project for aviation safety metrics.
5 19 Robert Aps Dr. Robert Aps is Head of Marine Systems Department at the Estonian Marine Institute of the University of Tartu. He holds a PhD in ecology and his recent studies are focused on the safety of coupled human - natural systems including the complex eco-socio-technical systems of maritime transportation. 20 Thomas Raste Dr. Thomas Raste started working for Continental in He has different positions in software development and project management. Today he works in the Advanced Engineering department as a Principal Technical Expert for Vehicle Dynamics in the topics: vehicle dynamics control, system simulation, electric vehicle technology and automated driving. 21 Hagen Böhmert Hagen Boehmert is functional safety manager for automated driving in Continental, Frankfurt. He received his diploma in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology and then started working in the automotive industry in Michigan, USA. After 2010 he was employed as safety engineer for series development of chassis components before switching to Continental.
