Examples of our EU Projects
ReconCell Where? EU - FoF Objective ReconCell aims at designing and implementing a new kind of an autonomous robot workcell (see Figure), which will be attractive not only for large production lines but also for few-of-a-kind production, which often takes place in SMEs. The proposed workcell is based on novel ICT technologies for programming, monitoring and executing assembly operations in an autonomous way. Length 36 months (starting 2016) Partners 9 Partners from Slovenia, Germany, Finland, Lithuania, Austria, DK Budget Total: 6,3 mill.
AUTOWARE Where? EU - FoF Objective AUTOWARE s consolidated the barriers development processes. Length 36 months (starting 2017) Partners 15 Partners from Spain, Slovenia, Austria, Italy, Belgium, NL, DE and DK Budget Total: 4 mill. high-level objective is to build an open ecosystem and single community that will lower of SMEs for cognitive automation application and application of autonomous manufacturing
BabyRobot Where? EU - ICT-24 Objective We model human-robot communication as a three step process: sharing attention, establishing common ground and forming shared goals. Prerequisites for successful communication are being able to decode the cognitive state of people around us (mindreading) and building trust. Our main goal is to create robots that analyze and track human behavior over time in the context of their surroundings (situational) using audio-visual monitoring in order to establish common ground and mind-reading capabilities. On BabyRobot we focus on the typically developing and autistic spectrum children. Our second goal is to define, implement and evaluate child-robot interaction application scenarios for developing specific socio-affective, communication and collaboration skills in typically developing and autistic spectrum children. Our third goal is to push beyond the state-of-the-art in core robotic technologies to support natural human-robot interaction and collaboration for edutainment and healthcare applications. Creating robots that can establish communication protocols and form collaboration plans on the fly will have impact beyond the application scenarios investigated here. Length 36 months (starting 2016) Partners 8 Partners from Greece, UK, Germany, Sweden, France and DK Budget Total: 4 mill.
Esmera Where? EU - ICT 27 Objective To support EU SMEs in materializing, testing and promoting robotic technologies through for example: Providing industrial challenges defined by key EU companies, stimulating SMEs to compete by developing and promoting new technologies Engaging a number of Competence Centres (CCs) that can provide an easily accessible environment for developing, evaluating, testing robotic technologies. Offering direct financial support through a cascade funding mechanism to supplement the technical excellence offered by the CCs, allowing prototype/product creation and promotion Offering mentoring and support in developing business cases and managing the complete chain from idea to market product by EU champions in robotics that have successfully undergone the process Length 48 months (starting January 2018) Partners 7 Partners from Greece, France, Germany, Spain, U.K. Italy and DK Budget Total: 8,0 mill.
HealthCAT Where? EU - Interreg Objective The demographic change leads to challenges in Denmark and Germany equally when the current standards for elderly care should be kept or even improved. By introducing robots, an important contribution to this issue can be made, since robots can, initially, assist with time-consuming, repetitive tasks and thereby disburden the staff. Examples for such tasks are the transportation of meals or the measurement of vital parameters, e.g. pulse or oxygen saturation. The project will (1) establish a regional network of relevant protagonists, (2) raise the problems based on demographic change in public discussion and include end-users in the development, (3) investigate the need for robotic solutions and estimate their economic potential, and (4) develop a prototype for such a solution and formulate a commercialization strategy for it. Length 36 months (starting 2017) Partners 8 Partners from Germany and Denmark Budget Total: 2,8 mill.
DEVAELA Where? Eurostars Objective To develop and demonstrate an automation system for daily tracking, feeding, and handling of European lobster (EL) to be integrated into a patented single-cage technology for lobster farming in Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS). DEVAELA will facilitate up scaling of a ground-breaking lobster rearing concept to commercial production [+150 MT/year], allowing us to operate the world s first full-scale, land-based lobster production farm supplying high-quality, plate-size EL. Length 24 months (starting 2016) Partners 3 Partners from Norway and Denmark Budget Total: 1,7 mill.
Funding Options
Horizon 2020 Introduction and Purpose Horizon 2020 is the largest EU research- and innovation programme in the history of EU. Within Horizon 2020 there is a focus of interdisciplinary, international co-operation between researchers, enterprises and end-users. A number of projects therefore require several participants. The Fund grants funding for International research- and development projects. Target Group European organizations (SMEs, public institutions). Budget Size of Grant Other 79 bill. (592 bill. DKK.) (distributed over 7 years: ). Depends on programme, call and topic addressed (the grant typically covers 70%-100% of the budget, and is between 1,3-4 mill. (10-30 mill. DKK)). There are three main pillars: 1) Scientific top quality, 2) Industrial leadership, and 3) Social challenges.
Horizon 2020 The Evaluation Criteria Section in the Proposal Evaluation is based on 1. Excellence - 2. Impact - The extent to which the outputs of the project would contribute to each of the expected impacts mentioned in the call. - Exploitation and dissemination - Communication of the project activities 3. Implementation - Clarity of the project objectives Soundness of the concept and methodology Extent the work is beyond state-of-the-art and demonstrates innovation potential Consideration of interdisciplinary approaches Quality and effectiveness of the work plan Management structure and procedure incl. risk and innovation management Complementarity of the partners Appropriateness of the allocation of tasks
Eurostars Introduction and Purpose The Eurostars programme focus on research intensive SMEs which develops innovative products, processes and services, for gaining competitive advantages. The Fund grants funding for Market-driven projects where a research intensive SME has a prominent position in the consortium. The project must result in a viable, commercial product. Target Group Budget Aid rate (DK) Every Eurostars country has its own office and rules Other Enterprises, public institutions (can participate as a partner). It is a requirement that a research intensive SME is involved. 1,14 bill. (of which 287 mill. comes from H2020, and 861 mill. comes from Eurostars-countries) Small and medium size enterprises = up to 60 % Large enterprises = up to 50 % Public institutions as partners = between % Every country has its own rules regarding among others aid rates and which organizations they support. E.g. UK does not support universities.
Eurostars Project length Maximum of 3 years. Market introduction No later than 2 years after project completion. Project budget (DK) Maximum of ( DKK) for the danish consortium (if one danish partner is involved) Maximum of ( DKK) for the danish consortium (if two danish partners are involved) Number of partners required Requirement for SMEs Average project At least 2 partners from 2 Eurostars-countries Must provide 50% of the collective budget. 3-4 partners 2-3 involved countries 29 months duration 1,4 mill.

Internal Evaluation 1 (poor) 2 (ok) 3 (good) Nice to have Result in a product which has a basis for organic growth High job creation, high earnings, strong added competitiveness Internal Complexity (indicates need for a partner) We do not know how to make it today We are able to sketch a concept for the solution We have a clear concept Need for new development (TRL) (indicates need for a partner) Research project (partner need is big) (Low TRL) Few existing solutions which does not remedy the problem in an optimum manner There exist similar solutions (Partner need is low) (High TRL) Project execution (difficulty in execution) Large budget, many partners, complex reporting Medium budget, few partners, easy/medium reporting Small budget, no partner(s), easy reporting Likelihood of grant Low (long-term R&D, uncertainty of product outcome and business case) Medium High (good business case, close to market) Business Case (internal) We cannot ourselves bring the product to market (e.g. need of development of sales channels) Local customers / sales channels, but limited opportunity for upscaling We are able to bring the product to market through existing sales channels Need for considerable additional capital to bring the product to the market (the enterprise cannot on its own raise capital) A need of capital (but the enterprise is capable of raising capital) The project includes preliminary commercialization Idea & Business Case Capital need (financing aside from what comes from the project)
The Process Step 1: Explore funding opportunities and find a specific call Find the right scope for your project which addresses the call. Step 2: Project Layout and Consortium Establishment Prepare a presentation for the project Define purpose: What is your project about, what will the projects yield be, what are the plans after the project completion (investor roadmap)? Define which competences there is a need of (and thereby which partners are needed). Accept that you in projects need to share the benefits, which means you do not own everything yourself conversely you are aided and you do not need to finance everything on your own either. Gather the right consortium based on your competency-mapping in the presentation Step 3: Matching of Expectations Conduct a meeting with the consortium and agree on a vision, which is to be used a foundation for the application Agree on specific to-dos, who does what and deadlines; make sure there is always one coordinator Step 4: Writing Process Everybody must make an effort and deliver well in advance Reviewing is important, including spelling and grammar corrections
Good Advice When you don t have a Project Idea Be outgoing! There are national contact points in each country where you can get support in partner search Contact universities and ask if they have some upcoming projects that you could be part of Go to online partner portals, where you can both find partners and add your profile so other companies can find you! (Examples: NCPs CaRE, CORDIS, Enterprise Europe Network cooperation opportunities database, Keep.EU etc.) Go to portals where you can find previous and ongoing projects (Examples: CORDIS, LIFE projects, etc.) Participate at networking workshops and events all over Europe, where you can form consortiums with people who have experience with both writing proposals and executing projects. Join groups on social media, such as LinkedIn Group Environment Projects & Partner Search - EASME ) Be aware that the coordinator role is resource intensive, and is typically undertaken by larger institutions
Good Advice When you have a Project Idea Start well in advance! Read the criteria carefully! Make sure your project matches scope Be aware of partnership requirements Think about the impact of your project in a macro perspective How can society benefit from it? Make sure your business case fits the purpose of the fund Search for help! (Universities, Growth Centres, EUopSTART, EuroQuality, etc.)
Example of a To-Do List The easy part is creating a todo list. The difficult part is executing it. Therefore, there must be 1 person that is in charge of coordinating everything. Remember if one task has to be completed by more people, then break down the task into smaller specific tasks for each person, so that everyone knows what they must deliver and by when by looking at the to-do list. Link to To-Do list
