RoBi-Design Process Step by Step Case example: UV-Disinfection- Robot 23
RoBi-Design Process
RoBi-Design Process The Market Development Fund (Markedsmodningsfonden) has together with the 5 Danish regions established a partnership of hospitals (Sygehuspartnerskabet). The common goal is to promote development of innovative solutions to generic challenges in the Danish health sector. Blue Ocean Robotics has proposed a disinfection robot for reducing infection rates in patient rooms in hospitals. Blue Ocean Robotics won the PCP tender and funding for R&D. The project was run as a RoBi-Design project. 25
RoBi-Design Process A Job-To-Be-Done is a one-line statement of the job that the final solution will perform, without mentioning how or by which means. The JTBD format: (1) verb, (2) object and (3) context. In this case, the JTBD was formulated: Disinfecting bacterials on surfaces in patient rooms and adjacent bathrooms. The JTBD helps to target the project scope and to focus the R&D team. 26
RoBi-Design Process 27
RoBi-Design Cases 28
RoBi-Design Process Data collection and analysis Current scenario and workflow Design guidelines 29
RoBi-Design Process A business case needs to be based on relevant parameters, in order to clearly demonstrate the business potential of a product. The following selection of business parameters are from the perspective of the user/customer (hospitals): Amount of required operators Number of operations per day Level of maintenance and service Unit price Total investment Payback time Etc. 30
RoBi-Design Process If solutions exist in the market, they will be investigated in depth and rated based on relevant parameters, in order to determine if they can be used. In this case, the parameters included: Level of automation Disinfection time Type of power source Lamp type Disinfection efficiency Unit price Etc. 31
RoBi-Design Process The business development (Stage 4) runs parallel with the product concept development (Stage 5). Two different business cases are prepared in this phase: Business case (user) perspective of the user/customer (hospitals) Business case (product) perspective of the derived business The business cases are based on the business case parameters determined earlier in the process (Stage 2). 32
RoBi-Design Process Brainstorming activities and tools are used here. The generated ideas are prioritised. The best ideas are presented to users and partner. 1-3 ideas are selected for further development. 33
RoBi-Design Process After the best ideas have been further developed into more complete concepts. These concept are ranked and evaluated based on parameters. A final concept is selected based on input from relevant stakeholders. 34
RoBi-Design Process A mock-up is a full-size or scaled model Mock-ups can be used to conduct simple studies, tests and demonstrations. Feedback and insights from mock-up tests can give valuable input to the R&D work. 35
RoBi-Design Process A plan for developing and testing one or more prototypes is prepared here. The needed human resources are found. Component suppliers and test sites are contacted. Finally, a budget and project Gantt chart is made and approved by all stakeholders. Financing options are also investigated. 36
UVDR Status Update 37
MultiTower CASE 3: Safe patient handling
HRI Challenges Designing for fluent HRI Technology needs to be user friendly (elderly patients & healthcare personnel) Reliable in the wild Development Short development time à short user involvement & user testing Technical challenges are priority Short term solution Designing in versions Humans helping robots 39
