1 Topical Collection on Blockchain-based Medical Data Management System: Security and Privacy Challenges and Opportunities Timely access to data, particularly data relevant to a patient s medical and genetic conditions, is crucial in the diagnosis of symptoms and delivery of the appropriate treatments. Increasingly, sharing of such information across borders and institutions can be achieved using existing and emerging technological advances, and this is an increasing focus of the research community. For example, how can one leverage existing state-of-the-art advances in data analytical and storage (e.g. cloud) solutions to facilitate the collection, processing, analysis, and storage of (processed) medical data while ensuring user privacy, data security, and data provenance? Blockchain, one popular distributed ledger technology, has the potential to be leveraged in the medical and healthcare industry. Specifically, blockchain is a hash chain with a chronological order maintained by consensus nodes without requiring a central authority. In other words, blockchain has the following characteristics: decentralization, verifiability and immutability, and these characteristics are essential in the managing of medical records (e.g. sharing of medical records among hospitals, and ensuring authenticity and reliability of the patient visits). Also, a blockchain-based solution can allow different participating medical and health institutions to minimize challenges associated with hierarchical diagnosis. The purpose of this special issue is to solicit existing research advances in the (potential) use of blockchain in the medical and healthcare field, as well as propose novel technical solutions for medical data sharing, provenance, etc. Of special interests are blockchain-based medical data management (BMDM) implementations that demonstrate innovations in addressing privacy-preserving and other crucial features/functionalities.

3 Guest Editors: Debiao He received the Ph.D. degree in applied mathematics from the School of Mathematics and Statistics, Wuhan University, Wuhan, China, in He is currently a Professor with the State Key Laboratory of Software Engineering, Computer School, Wuhan University, Wuhan, China. He has authored over 100 research papers in refereed international conferences and journals. His work has been cited more than 2800 times at Google Scholar (H-Index: 28). His main research interests include applied cryptography and information security. Kim-Kwang Raymond Choo holds the Cloud Technology Endowed Professorship in the Department of Information Systems and Cyber Security at the University of Texas at San Antonio, and is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Cyber Security and Forensics at the University of South Australia, Australia. He was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Coventry University, Coventry, U.K. He is working as an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Thapar University, Patiala (Pb.), India. He has published more than 100 scholarly research papers in leading journals and conferences from IEEE, Elsevier, Springer, and John Wiley.
