1 A Report 1 st International Conference on Recent Advances in Information Technology (RAIT- 2012) The Department of Computer Science & Engineering of Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad organized the 1 st International Conference on Recent Advances in Information Technology (RAIT 2012) at ISM, Dhanbad during March The General Chair and Co-Chair of the conference was Prof. Prasanta K. Jana and Prof. G. P. Biswas respectively. Dr. Chiranjeev Kumar was the Program Chair, Dr. Haider Banka was the Program Co-Chair and Dr. Sushanta Mukhopadhyay was the Organizing Chair of the Conference. RAIT-2012 was endorsed by the IEEE, IEEE Communication Society Calcutta Chapter, Computer Society of India (CSI), Machine Intelligence Research Labs USA, & International Neural Network Society (INNS) - India Regional Chapter. These organizations have extended their technical support to make this event truly at the International level. Inaugural Function on 15 th March 2012 The conference had an enormous success in providing a common platform to all IT & computer professionals, researchers, academicians, industry people and valued users to deliberate on several issues of Information Technology. The inaugural & Valedictory functions were presiding over by Shri P. K. Lahiri, IAS (Retd.), Chairman ISM GC &EB. Prof. Gautam Barua, the Director, IIT Guwahati was the Chief Guest, and Shri Sandeep Kumar, MD, S&T Mining Kolkata was the Guest of Honour of the inaugural function. Prof. D. C. Panigrahi, Director of ISM and the Patron of the conference graced the inaugural & valedictory functions. The Chief Guest of valedictory function was Shri A. K. Singh, the Chairman-cum-Managing Director, CMPDIL, Ranchi. Prof. Somenath Biswas, IIT Kanpur & Shri Satish Puri, Director General, DGMS, Dhanbad was the Guests of Honour of the valedictory function.

Prof. Jia Chin Lin, NCU, Taiwan Keynote Speaker Dr. Sergey Gorinsky, Institute of IMDEA, Madrid Keynote Speaker In terms of technical paper submission, the conference has received an overwhelming response from academicians and researchers from almost all renowned Institutes of India and Universities from Libya, UAE, China, Oman, Myanmar and Canada. The conference has also received the technical papers from several reputed R&D Organizations and Software Industries such as CSIR Labs, DRDO, ISRO, Brocade Communications, BSNL, C-DOT, Ericsson, HP Labs, Oracle, TCS and many more. In total we have received 432 papers and after critical review from International and National reviewers around 47% of the papers i.e., 198 have been accepted and 174 papers were presented during 22 technical sessions. The speaker Dr. Sergery Gorinsky spoke on the real side of the internet and their implications for understanding and design of the internet. The cloud computing and Grid Computing issues was discussed by Prof. A. K. Misra. Prof. DVLN Somayajuhu discussed the basic concepts and principles of Online Analytical Processing, the concept of data cube, and a survey of methods related to Privacy preserving with OLAP. Prof. Bhargab Bhattacharya talked about several algorithmic issues of sample preparation with a digital microfluidic biochip, and demonstrates their performance on various real life examples. Prof. Phalguni Gupta talked about multimodal biometrics as a solution towards better human identification. Several issues related to future Internet were outlined and solution to these issues were discussed by Prof. Garimella Rama Murthy. Dr. Jatindra Kunar Deka addressed the

5 issues related to VLSI and embedded system design and verification. Prof. Somenath Biswas talked about two characterization of success of families of ergotic Markov Chains for optimization. Prof. Sanjeev S. Tambe discussed the application of Artificial Neural Networks in coal science and technology. Mr. Shambhu Tiwari Head IT, Tata Steel Ltd. Prof. A. K. In order to make this conference truly an International event, Alumni Department of Computer Science & Engineering ISM Dhanbad, Department of Information Technology (DIT) Govt. of Jharkhand, Ministry of Earth Science, CSIR, DRDO, Dept. of Atomic Energy, TCS, Tata Steel Limited & Amdocs came forward with their financial support.

Jana summarized the technical sessions and presented the recommendation of the conference. Prof. D. C. Panigrahi,

7 Director, ISM highlighted the role of IT industry in National Growth and also stressed on the future role of the Computer Science and Engineering Department. The guest of honour Prof. Somenath Biswas, IIT Kanpur talked about the need of Research and encouraged the students to go for higher studies. Shri Satish Puri, Director General, DGMS, Dhanbad and the guest of honour presented the need and role of IT in mining industry. Shri P. K. Lahiri IAS (Retd.), Chairman ISM GC &EB talked about the implementation of innovative idea in the field of IT. The Chief Guest Shri A. K. Singh, the Chairman-cum-Managing Director, CMPDIL, Ranchi suggested about an application of IT in the Coal sector. The conference ended with the vote of thanks by the Program Chair Dr. Chiranjeev Kumar.
