The main results: requirements, gaps, recommendations
Requirements Facility Provider Requirements The testbed should provide technological transparency to the research user community to assess whether the facility is suitable for the quick deployment of the planned experiment, and how to run it, if the facility was found to be appropriate User Requirements More related to the availability, accessibility and usability of experimental facilities at their disposal. Clear information in terms of technology offered, applications supported and technical support to conduct the experiment efficiently are indispensable mainly for external users Federation Requirements Central idea to extend the benefits of FIRE, allowing to run experiments using resources provided by different testbeds. Federation may take the form of a common interface to multiple underlying testbeds. Standardization Requirements Testbed facilities should explicit which standardised methods of testing they support. This is essential to minimize test effort and allow repeatability of experiments.
Gaps Testing methodologies and standards The experimental facilities announce the available features for testing in general terms, but do not identify the testing methodologies supported or standards to be followed. Interconnectivity and Interoperability Generally, testbeds do not support such interconnectivity and interoperability criteria and do not specify standards needed to interface with their experimental facilities. Sustainability We have seen over years that the testbeds are available during the last few months of the project for any experimentation and are not generally supported after the project conclusion, with some exceptions in NRENs. The testbeds so developed reappear to the stage once the follow-on projects are funded. Otherwise they simply disappear.
Gaps Protection of intellectual property There is no general guideline in this respect, whereas it should be developed to make the FIRE experimental facility a successful initiative. Security and privacy Future Internet has to be trustworthy with secure transactions and privacy protected. Though FP7 projects cover a large spectrum of related issues, there is few FIRE testbed project with security or privacy as major focus in the project. Socio-economic aspects Most of testbeds privilege technical aspects, so the social aspects are of less value in these projects. However, Living labs which make use of some FIRE testbeds give higher relevance to social aspects of users.
Some Recommendations Standardization Paths to Innovation Sustainability Business Models
Conclusions Experimental facilities (EF) rely mostly on public grant for a specific project, and more often than not has a limited group of users at the end of project If innovation and research advancement is the value, the technologies and services provided by an EF would be better used if they could benefit more users, and so permit increased exploitation of produced innovation and research advancement a necessary condition is to raise the capacity of the EF to adapt to the needs of external users, with special attention to end-users from enterprises. To guarantee sustainability of experimental facilities it is fundamental to develop a suitable business model. Demonstrate sustainability has been the weakest achievement of all experimental facilities in the European research framework. 14
