Overview of History The economic history of centres around the growth of the mining industry, which at its heights employed almost the whole of the non-agricultural population with large numbers of pit villages being founded throughout the county (but today no deep-coal mines exist in the county). Durham is the only English county name to be prefixed with County.
Overview of Geography and Location is the largest local authority in the north east, lying at the heart of north east England with Teesside to the south, Tyne and Wear and Northumberland to the north. It covers a total area of 862 square miles and borders Tyne and Wear, North Yorkshire, Cumbria and Northumberland. The largest employment centres are in the urban centre of Durham City but also in edge of town business/ industrial parks to the south of Newton Aycliffe (mostly manufacturing) and to the west of Peterlee (automotive component manufacturing and call centre activity) along the A19 corridor. Durham is well connected. The east coast mainline, and the A1, A19 and A66 road corridors provide good access throughout the County. The County is centrally located in the economic heart of the north east. The good accessibility of parts of the County into the larger cities and towns of the north east has led to strong economic ties and interdependencies with these areas. Journey to work evidence suggests the County has benefited from the more recent growth of Sunderland and Newcastle.
Overview of Key Business Districts At 540-acres, Durham Green Business Park is the largest new business park in the North East near junction 61 of the A1 at Bowburn, south of Durham. To retain their competitiveness and stimulate business growth Durham must retain higher value jobs and support employer led skills growth through skills development and training, maintaining a skilled workforce is essential. Addressing skills gaps in order to enable people to access sustained employment is increasingly seen as a vital part of the unemployment agenda.
Skills Shortages Engineering and Manufacturing Industries Skills shortages are a major concern for the North-East s engineering and manufacturing industries Around 8,500 skilled workers are due to retire from engineering and manufacturing roles in the region by As the skills shortage looms, cities need to ask themselves what are employers doing to future-proof the skills within their companies? An increased intake of apprentices provides part of the solution. It is the norm for young people in Germany to either go to university or go into an apprenticeship is it any wonder Germany is known as the powerhouse of industry and is a top market for investors. Ensuring young people gain the skills and experience they need for successful careers and to meet the needs of s employers is crucial. Statistics provided by the National Apprenticeship Service (NAS) claim 96% of employers that take on an apprentices report benefits to their business, and 72% of businesses report improved productivity. Employers of Durham hold the key to helping young people prepare for work and harnessing their potential. The recruitment and employment of apprenticeships plays a significant role in producing a highly qualified workforce and must become the top priority on the education and training agenda. High quality apprenticeships offer a powerful tool to help individuals to progress and succeed; they help businesses create the skilled workforce needed to compete, and equal any in the world.
Summary Providing Individual Opportunity One crucial element in creating a more balanced economy with a revitalised and effective manufacturing base is a highly qualified workforce. There is a recognised need to give people opportunities to realise the fulfillment and social mobility that work in general, and more substantively career development opportunities, can provide. Tackling unemployment in the North East Apprenticeships are an ideal way both to earn and learn. But individuals of all ages can benefit. Few people today are settled in jobs for life. There is an increasing need, and opportunity, for many to consider and adapt to new career directions especially in sectors where there are increasing skill shortages.
Summary Improving employer links with schools Skills in English and maths provide a foundation for progression in all occupations. We are committed to improving employer links with schools, colleges and other training providers, in order to guide young people into rewarding careers but also for young people to consider job outlook before deciding what subjects and courses to study.
