Innovation Integrator Innovation Integrator The Centre for Process Innovation Making successful innovation happen
The Centre for Process Innovation From innovation to commercialisation The High Value Manufacturing Catapult is a partnership between industry and government, which is a catalyst for the future growth and success of manufacturing in the UK. Its long-term goal is to stimulate growth in the manufacturing sector and grow the sector s contribution to UK GDP to a level more commensurate with that of competitor economies. It does this by helping businesses accelerate new concepts (often started in research institutions) to commercial reality (where they can be funded through market sources). In doing so, the Catapult reduces companies risk in innovation, and it enables the UK to address market needs in key areas, making the country more competitive on the global stage. The High Value Manufacturing Catapult combines the strengths of seven UK technology and innovation centres, each focusing on major underpinning manufacturing technologies. The Catapult brings these centres together to develop cross sector manufacturing capabilities, which can span from raw materials to finished processes. It also enables innovation to cut across sectors by bringing together businesses from diverse industries and giving them access to a pool of world-class expertise, equipment and processes invested and supported by UK government. The Centre for Process Innovation is the UK s national technology and innovation centre serving and supporting the process manufacturing industries. Key industry leaders and SMEs choose CPI to help them develop, prove, prototype and scale up the next generation of products and processes. We provide our partners with innovation support across a range of technology platforms, each of which have the potential to generate a substantial impact on the future of manufacturing. We provide product and process development facilities and expertise in industrial biotechnology and biorefining, formulation and flexible manufacturing, printable electronics and biologics with the overall aim of creating less waste, cleaner, more efficient and more economic products and processes. Our open innovation model enables our partners to develop products and prove processes with reduced risk. We help partners demonstrate their products and processes to prove feasibility before investing in capital equipment, people and supply chain. New products and processes can be proven; on paper, in the lab and in the plant, before being manufactured at an industrial scale. By working with us, companies can take their products and processes to market faster. Better Products, Faster We help our partners to produce better products with increased quality and performance. We can help create processes with higher yields and reduced manufacturing time, converting raw materials or feedstock to product. Low Cost, Low Waste Manufacturing We help companies reduce and reuse wastes, utilise sustainable resources and decrease reliance on fossil fuels. We enable companies to decrease capital and manufacturing costs by facilitating batch to continuous processes, increased automation, and reduced manufacturing time.
How the Innovation Integrator can help you address your innovation challenges: Get to market faster Reduce risk Attract investment Create more value CPI s Innovation Integrator model is an innovation tool that helps identify the factors that can help your company, product, process or technology move forward. Through a systematic analysis process it helps you determine the next steps to take you to commercialisation. The Innovation Integrator helps you: àà Get to market faster àà Reduce costs associated with innovation àà Reduce risks associated with innovation àà Create a roadmap for overcoming your innovation challenges CPI s unique integrated innovation process combines this powerful diagnostic system with the opportunity to use CPI s world class assets and access its extensive network of collaborative partners, it can help you to successfully develop and prove a market ready company, product, process or technology with less risk and increased speed.
What is the Innovation Integrator? The Innovation Integrator Model Innovation is the essence of CPI s business. We know exactly what is needed for successful innovation to take place, but to understand what is required, it is first necessary to establish where you are. CPI s model assesses 11 factors that define and enable effective innovation to take place. Each factor is equally important, and every factor must be addressed to achieve innovation and identify a solid route to commercialisation. CPI s Innovation Integrator model is a structured diagnostic business tool that provides a snapshot of your company, product, process or technology, and identifies the next actions required to bring it closer to commercialisation. Lead Entrepreneur Money The Innovation Integrator model defines where your company, product, process or technology sits on the innovation continuum. People Intellectual Property Innovation Assets Underpinning Science Market Need Independent Endorsement Value and Price Combination Legislators/ Regulators The Innovation Continuum The Innovation Integrator Supply Chain
The 11 Factors Explained... MONEY Regardless of the source seed, angel, venture capital, corporate or public - accessing money is vital at every step of the way. The level and type of funding required will change throughout the innovation process. PEOPLE From conception through the stages of development and right up to market entry, people are crucial to the success of your idea. The type and number of people required will change throughout the process. LEAD ENTREPRENEUR Your organisation needs a driving force that will champion the process or product at every stage if momentum is to be maintained. INNOVATION ASSETS INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY Protecting the ideas that underpin your process or product is as important as the concept itself. From patents to copyright, and registered design rights to know-how, your intellectual property must be safeguarded. Equipment that can be used to assess, prove, scale-up and develop the process, product or service is essential. Investing in fixed assets at the outset is too expensive for many companies due to the scale and the associated risk. This risk can be alleviated by partnering with an asset based technology and innovation centre. MARKET NEED UNDERPINNING SCIENCE An ever present driving factor, from the initial discovery or intervention to continued academic support as your company evolves. There must be an actual or perceived need for your process, product or service to ensure continued demand once the product is launched. Sales and market planning will be essential for success. INDEPENDENT ENDORSEMENT It simply isn t enough for you to think that your proposition is viable - third party recognition is vital. LEGISLATORS/ REGULATORS Legislators and regulators have the power to support the adoption of your product or to prevent its release. They need to be closely involved to ensure you are able to sell your innovative process or product. SUPPLY CHAIN Without a supply chain that stretches from raw material to finished product and factors in dealing with end of life, it will be impossible to manufacture your product and deliver it to market. VALUE AND PRICE COMBINATION Your process, product or service must have a combination of price and value that makes it attractive to customers and consumers. It must meet a need and be seen as having sufficient value that the user is prepared to pay for it. Copyright Centre for Process Innovation Limited. All rights reserved.
How does it work? What are the outputs? The CPI team will work closely with you throughout the assessment process. The following steps show the actions CPI will take in order to successfully carry out an Innovation Integrator assessment: Following an in-depth assessment using the Innovation Integrator model, CPI s feedback report will include the following outputs: Step 1 CPI works with you to understand your innovation challenges and explain the CPI Innovation Integrator model. àà àà A clear picture of your delivery capability An assessment of your innovation readiness Step 2 CPI will meet you to work through the assessment process, to identify where you sit on the innovation continuum in relation to the 11 factors. àà A report outlining which of the 11 innovation factors need attention to move forward towards commercialisation Step 3 Step 4 Upon completion of the assessment CPI will review the input and create a feedback report based on the results of the assessment. The report will identify the innovation factors that need to be addressed to move forward. CPI will share the assessment results with you and discuss next steps to help your company create an innovation plan. CPI can provide continuous guidance and support during the full life span of your innovation to commercialisation journey, and can work with you to develop an innovation plan that defines the next steps of your journey to successful innovation.
Case Studies Sunpatch Protects UV protection for Moles and Skin SunPatch Limited Silent Sensors Limited SunPatch, an SME based in north east England, has developed a transparent UV filtering patch capable of protecting vulnerable areas of skin from potentially damaging UVA and UVB rays. UK SME Silent Sensors has developed an innovative solution for tyre safety management and quality control. The technology provides real time information on the tyres journey through the manufacturing supply chain as well as once they hit the road, streaming continuous data which is collected via cloud telecommunication and displayed on the driver s dashboard in the form of wear and tear tracking and warning messages. Silent Sensors offering promises to become part of the whole tyre life cycle, helping to deliver safer roads and lower car emissions. SunPatch contacted CPI after hearing about the company through the North East Chamber of Commerce. Following a meeting with the CPI team it was suggested that SunPatch undertake an Innovation Integrator assessment in order to assess the company s current capabilities and the technology readiness of the product. After identifying SunPatch s strengths and some areas for improvement, CPI provided the company with commercialisation support by introducing potential investors, marketing and PR partners, and undertaking product validation testing. Mike Smith, Commercial Director at SunPatch said the Innovation Integrator was an extremely useful exercise from the pre meeting and actual exercise to the formal presentation and discussion. It is difficult to put into words the benefits of working with CPI. The professionalism, facilities and depth of skills and experience across the business has contributed significantly to our thoughts and ways of doing business, and opened doors to new contacts. Now armed with the evidence that its products can succeed, Sunpatch is continuing to work with CPI to identify, develop and commercialise new and innovative products to add to its growing range. Silent Sensors engaged with CPI to commence a new product development program for improving the antenna and printed sensor components that facilitate data transmission, and incorporating them into the tyre manufacturing process and associated supply chain. As part of this development program, Silent Sensors underwent an Innovation Integrator assessment to evaluate the current state of the business and identify existing strengths, weaknesses, and next step solutions. Silent Sensors CEO, Marcus Taylor, said: the CPI Innovation Integrator diagnostic assessment has been very useful on a number of levels. From a stakeholder perspective it has helped us all to appreciate the many aspects of the business that need to be addressed in order to be successful and to put in place a plan of action. From a shareholder perspective it has helped underpin the rationale for what additional funding we need and how it will be used. From a go to market strategy it has enabled us to rationalise the many strands in to a more coherent and focused plan with supporting road map. And finally it has meant that CPI has been able to provide us with the support we need to realise our full potential. This is already bearing fruit with our plan to leverage our existing roadmap into two complementary modular offerings based upon tracking and sensing. We can now offer a traceability solution which is based on passive RFID technology together or separately from our Bluetooth low energy sensing solution. Underpinning all of our offerings is CPI s proprietary printed manufacturing technology which will allow Silent Sensors to add more value to its clients and partners as we move further upstream in the value chain. Our goal is to redefine the internet of things as the Internet of Tyres. Together with CPI and our other partners we are now embarking on a challenge to create battery free active sensors platform for tyres Mark Beckwith, Business Development Manager at CPI commented: we are very excited about the potential of Silent Sensors and their specialist technology. The key factor for our partnership is their ability to use the assets and knowledge at CPI to progress their technology from research scale to pilot production levels.
Testimonials CPI s Innovation Integrator model provided new insight into which areas of the business would need investment to fulfil the longer term aims of the project and identified specific studies which CPI could engage in with us to resolve the problems identified. Richard Bond - Managing Director, International Innovative Technologies (IIT) We found CPI s Innovation Integrator process stimulating, the results of the assessment gave us a good idea of where we sit in the market. John Bignall Bignall Group Ltd Working with CPI has enabled us to gain an independent view of our readiness for the next stage of innovation. Their broad sector knowledge and custom evaluation model has provided a true and unbiased evaluation against best in class. Colin Lewis - General Manager, Ceramex Ltd ProsFit Technologies UK Ltd. had the opportunity to undergo the CPI Innovation Integrator diagnostic assessment, which was valuable in identifying opportunities for further value creation, particularly through technology development & commercialisation. All in all, a good exercise and well worth the investment of time.
