The go-to place for advanced manufacturing technologies in the UK
Introduction Bob Gilbert Chair HVM Catapult The High Value Manufacturing Catapult works with government, academia and industry partners to bridge the gap between innovation and commercialisation of manufacturing in the UK. We develop and commercialise revolutionary technologies and add real value to the UK economy. A mere five years since our operational start, evidence of the outcomes and economic impact of our collaboration with industry exceeds our targets. Yet we are ambitious in aiming to work with even more sectors and businesses. If you think our offer is of interest, we look forward to hearing from you.

Catapults: UK Policy The High Value Manufacturing Catapult forms part of the national Catapult programme, which was established by Innovate UK and receives government support through the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. Each Catapult is focused on an area in which the UK has real potential to generate growth in strategically important global markets, and there is already strong evidence they are adding benefit to the economy in terms of jobs and growth. Catapults aim to draw funding from three equal sources: Core public funding from UK Government, through Innovate UK Business funded R&D contracts Competitively won collaborative R&D projects, from a mix of public and private sources 1
There are currently 11 Catapults: Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult Digital Catapult Energy Systems Catapult Future Cities Catapult High Value Manufacturing Catapult Medicines Technologies Catapult Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult Precision Medicine Catapult Satellite Applications Catapult Semiconductors Applications Catapult Transport Systems Catapult 2
Manufacturing facts The value of the global manufacturing market is 6.7trillion UK manufacturing employs 2.6 million people UK manufacturing makes up 11% 69% of UK GVA of UK Research & Development is funded by the manufacturing industry 44% of UK exports come from manufacturing 3

TRLs A new product or technology goes through several cycles of experimentation, refinement and testing before it can be incorporated into industrial-scale production systems. At HVM Catapult, we help developers and adopters of new technologies to measure their product s stage of development and its readiness for manufacture. The Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) provide common terms to broadly define technology, from concept to commercial production, through to disposal. We provide general comparisons to help companies commercialise technology and bring it to market. We typically operate in the area of TRL 4 to 6. 5
TRL 1 TRL 2 Early innovation and research Research establishments TRL 3 TRL 4 TRL 5 Applied research and development Catapult focus TRL 6 TRL 7 TRL 8 TRL 9 Technology implementation through to successful operations Private sector 6
Our mission The HVM Catapult is the catalyst for the future growth and success of manufacturing in the UK. We help accelerate new concepts to commercial reality and thereby create a sustainable high value manufacturing future for this country. Our ultimate aim is to significantly grow the contribution of the manufacturing sector to the UK economy. 7
