Bhd. In addition, UTeM also contributes in funding the research project, with a total amount of RM22,250. This is the first time for the CoE to be awarded a research grant from CREST, with strong co-operation with our industrial partner. Our researchers are highly inspired by this achievement and aim to work more effectively to produce high impact demand-driven research that can benefit the local industries and society at large. Other researchers from CARe who involve in this project are Assoc. This publication provides information on recent news, developments, and announcements about CARe. Highlight for this issue include the success of CARe s researchers in securing CREST grant worth over RM700,000 along with industrial partner, Jabil Circuit Sdn. Bhd. The project will be led by our own manager, Prof. Dr. Ghazali. On top of that, our researchers also will be awarded grant up to RM15,000 for Perodua Eco-Challenge 2017 (PEC2017). Other highlights are MoA signing ceremony between UTeM and CTRM for research collaboration. The university will be represented by researchers from CARe. Another year has passed, another has come. It has been a good year for CARe in 2016 and we hope CARe will achieve more success and further progress in Happy New Year 2017 from the newsletter team. Dr. Tee Boon Tuan UTeM AND CTRM SIGN AGREEMENT TO ESTABLISH COLLABORATIVE LABORATORY U niversitii Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) and CTRM Aero Composites Sdn. Bhd. has signed Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to establish UTeM-CTRM Collaborative Laboratory. The establishment of the lab is hoped to further enhanced strategic partnership between the university and industry through research activities. The event was held on 1st November 2016 in CTRM. UTeM was represented by Vice Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Shahrin Sahib while CTRM by Mr. Shamsuddin Mohamed Yusof, Group Chief Operating Officer of CTRM. The signing ceremony was witnessed by Prof. Datuk. Dr. Ir. Mohd Jailani Mohd Nor, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research & Innovation) of UTeM and Mr. Roslan Roskan, Chief Operating Officer of CTRM Aero Composites Sdn. Bhd. Researchers from CARe who will involve in the programs under this MoA are Prof. Dr. Ghazali Omar (Manager of CARe), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Noreffendy Tamaldin (Dean of Mechanical Engineering Faculty), Dr. Mohd Azman Abdullah, Dr. Reduan Mat Dan, Dr. Abd Rahman Dullah, Dr. Ahmad Kamal Mat Yamin and Dr. Muhd Ridzuan Mansor. The agreement will allow UTeM s personnel and student to do non-commercialization activities such as research, training, attachment and other related programs as may be agreed between the parties at no cost. The university will provide full co-operation and commitment to CTRM to set up UTeM-CTRM Collaborative Laboratory. This collaboration aim to develop more research activities and strengthen the university relation with the industry. ABOUT CTRM CTRM Aero Composites Sdn Bhd is a wholly owned subsidiary of Composites Technology Research Malaysia Sdn Bhd (CTRM). It was incorporated on 16 August 1994 as the manufacturing unit of CTRM, focusing on the manufacturing of composites components for both aerospace and non-aerospace segments. 3 CARe Newsletter Page 3 PERODUA ECO-CHALLENGE 2017 S tudents and staffs of Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FKM) and Faculty of Technology Management and Technopreneurship (FPTT), Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) participated in the selection of Perodua Eco Challenge 2017 (PEC2017) competition held at Kompleks PERODUA Rawang on 16 November 2016 ago. A total of 21 institutions of higher learning (IPT) in Malaysia participated in the selection process and only 10 best teams were selected to represent their respective institutions to compete in the competition that will take place throughout With dedication and hard work, UTeM was crowned as one of the 10 best university team to compete in the final round. Presentation of appointment letters by Y. Berbahagia Datuk Dr. Aminar Sallah, President and Chief Executive Officer of PERODUA was held on December 8, 2016, located at Perodua Sentral, Petaling Jaya. PEC2017 will focus on research and development, and all selected IPTs will work closely with PERODUA R&D team along with PERODUA vendors, which will be nominated later. The selected teams for PEC2017 competition will also be awarded grants of up to RM 15, to help the team in developing and producing the final product. In addition, the PERODUA R&D team will help to provide assistance and guidance throughout the process. The selected vendors will also cooperate in the construction of the prototype. Prizes of up to RM 80, awaits the winner at the end of With that, the team from UTeM wants to take this opportunity to thank all staffs of UTeM for the encouragement and assistance given both directly and indirectly that leads to this achievement. FACTS & FIGURES From its introduction in 2009 till 2013, PEC s focused was on redesigning an existing Perodua model for fuel efficiency. It evolved into building a car with P2 underpinnings, and marketing them, with FC as the main goal. Rahman ViBRO Research Group MOTORCYCLE TOWING DEVICES Towing is coupling two or more objects together so that they may be pulled by a designated power source or sources. This project was undertaken to invent a new device that can be used for towing between two motorcycles. This device can help user to tow a disabled motorcycle by using another motorcycle especially in emergency situation. Expensive service charges of towing service through vehicles recovery service can be unreasonable especially on highways. Usually, motorcyclists use their legs as connector to push or pull another motorcycle. Hence, this is obviously not a safe practice to continue. There are two objectives of the project. First is to design and fabricate a towing device between two motorcycles. Secondly, the aim is to test the towing device that has been fabricated. However, the scope limits the design and fabricate of a towing device between two motorcycles having engine capacity below 150cc each. This has been the results of a project done by Termiti [1]. Currently, there are some related technologies to tow a two-wheeler. A trailer is generally an unpowered vehicle towed by a powered vehicle. A trailer for a motorcycle is designed based on the application of flatbed vehicle tow truck. Entire section part of the motorcycle must be placed on the trailer to enable it to be towed to other places. Moreover, support sling is available to give extra support to the towed motorcycle for stability [2]. Another candidate is the towing cradle. The device comprises of a substantially vertical member and a horizontal member being interconnected for supporting the motorcycle s front wheel. It clamps the front wheel of a motorcycle and keeps the front wheel elevated so that only its back wheel contacts the ground. The towing vehicle can be mounted with the cradle and other accessories that ensure safety [3]. Similar method between two bicycles is called tandem coupling [4]. This would be the datum of the presented work. Despite all those, the reality in Malaysia is that a disabled motorcycle is likely to be pulled or pushed by another motorcycle. However, as mentioned earlier, this is dangerous for those involved as well as other road users as they are easy to lose control or risk being run over. There are many design requirements that need to be addressed. Included here are some of the important ones. The motorcycle towing process can be efficiently done by using a proper device that is a suitably designed mechanism for towing. Next, the machine must be safe for both motorcyclists and other road users. Furthermore, the users must feel comfortable when they use the towing device, which must also be easy to handle and store. Figure 1(a) shows the final design that has been accomplished thus far. Actually, many conceptual designs were generated and through systematic selection methods based on comparison of criteria fulfilments, this displayed concept was refined to add more flexibility between the two motorcycles. In this design, some installation operations are needed to connect the device to the swing arm of the rear wheel of the towing motorcycle and to the fork of the front wheel of the motorcycle being towed. Next, Figure 1(b) shows a picture of the final product. Mild steel was used for the structural frame and some welded joints were used to assemble components and parts like the universal coupling. Preliminary road testing has proven that the device works excellently. However, it was done at slow speed in a village road. More tests are needed to see the performance and reliability of the towing device in common use on roads and highways. Designing a new towing device for use between two motorcycles is achieved by using the Product Development Process. The production of the towing device prototype was implemented according the needed criteria and specifications especially on safety. The device has been proven to function for towing motorcycle using motorcycle safely albeit in a rather controlled environment. Further testing and analysis are needed. Shape and other optimizations are suggested in order to make it more appealing and user-friendly. 5 CARe Newsletter Page 5 BIOLUBRICANT AND ITS APPLICATIONS By: Biolubricants, also known as bio-based lubricants or bio-lubes, are made from a variety of vegetable oils, such as rapeseed, canola, sunflower, soybean, palm, and coconut oils. The best application for biolubricants is in machinery that loses oil directly into the environment during use, total loss lubricants (TLLs), and in machinery used in any sensitive areas, such as in or near water. Figure 1 below show the application of biolubricants in machinery industries. Nor Azmmi Masripan GTriboE Research Group Figure 1 Application of bio lubricant as a gear oil in machinery industries [1] Applications for TLLs include two-stroke engines, chainsaw bars and chains, railroad flanges, cables, dust suppressants, and marine lubricants. Numerous biolubricants are available on the market that meet or exceed the American Society for Testing and Materials International (ASTM) standards for comparable mineral lubricants made from petroleum. Figure 2 below show an examples sources of biolubricants. The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) also provides certifications for biolubricants, including TC-W3, for two-stroke engine oil performance. Bio-based content is determined by testing to ASTM method D6866. Using radiocarbon dating, it is possible to compare the total amount of decaying carbon isotope in a product to how much would be found in recently grown materials. The ratio provides the percentage of the product s bio-based content. Advantages of biolubricants are as: (a) Toxic chemical reduction. (b) Improved water quality. (c) Climate change reduction. Benefit of biolubricant applications are: (a) Reduces public exposure to toxins in the environment. (b) Contributes to improved water quality for human and aquatic life. 6 Page 6 Issue 4, December 2016 By: Mizah Ramli A-MAT Research Group Yu Sekiguchi Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan EXPERIMENTAL METHOD FOR ADHESIVE CREEP STRENGTH Adhesives in engineering products have recently replaced conventional fasteners (e.g., bolts, rivets, screws, welding, etc.). Adhesive bonding possesses superior advantages, including uniform stress distribution, flexibility in design, and continuous joining without holes. Because adhesive bonding not only has the capability to join homogeneous material, but also allows for the joining of dissimilar materials [1,2], this technique is very promising, especially for the automotive industry, considering multi-material structures have advantages in terms of weight reduction. Degradation of a material can cause deformation that accumulates with respect to time. This phenomenon is known as creep, and it occurs especially in polymers due to their viscoelastic or viscoplastic behaviors. Because almost all adhesives consist of polymeric materials, adhesively bonded joints have a tendency toward creep rupture; hence, engineers should consider creep when designing structures that include adhesively bonded parts [3]. Furthermore, high environmental temperatures increase the tendency of creep deformations and rupture in materials. Therefore, more attention has to be paid to creep when the service temperature of products is high. To meet the demands for creep tests of adhesively bonded joints, a novel method is proposed in which multiple specimens are simultaneously tested using a specially designed hydro-pneumatic testing machine and a specimen holder to support the multiple specimens. The specialty of this testing setup was derived from its restraint devices, which were installed to the connectors that hold the specimens. When the failure of a butt joint occurred, an adherend of the ruptured specimen was shifted to the end of the elongated holes and stopped by the bolts. As the length of the elongated holes for each pair differed, the sequence of joint failure was determined by the displacement of the ruptured adherend. Conventional creep testing machines require manual work to change the weight whenever creep testing for a different load value is needed to be done. In this study, a testing machine having a hydropneumatic system is proposed. This machine permits the change of loading to be controlled by a valve. It is more convenient, as hard work is not necessary to carry out various conditions of creep tests compared with conventional creep testing machines. The reason why the choke valves were inserted in the hydraulic circuit was to prevent the broken adherends from quickly moving due to the continuous loading of the pneumatic system. The quick movement of the adherends can induce a shock when the adherends move to the limit of the restraint devices, and the shock may simultaneously cause the failure of other specimens. The choking valves can control the flow rate of the hydraulic fluid (i.e., the use of the valves limits the velocity of the broken adherends so the testing setup could be stretched deliberately). In other words, the choking valves work as a damper for the system. The testing machine also contains a temperature control chamber, which contains only the multi-specimen setup inside. Therefore, creep tests with five specimens can be performed under same environmental conditions. N O R M A H (UTM) Green & Efficient Energy Technology Research Group (GrEET) has organized two executive talks on 23 and 24 November 2016 respectively. The venue was collaborative learning room located in Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. The invited speaker is Assoc. Prof. Dr. Normah Mohd Ghazali from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. The first talk entitled Environmentally friendly thermoacoustic technologies for refrigerator/engine was held on 23 November and was about green technologies based on thermoacoustic principles. The talks has attracted 103 participants. Dr. Normah then delivered another talk on 24 November which focusing on plagiarism in academic publication and was attended by 55 participants, mostly postgraduate students. After her talk, Dr. Normah was invited by our researchers, Dr. Fatimah Al-Zahrah and Dr. Ernie Mat Tokit to tour the labs under GrEET research group.
