SYSTEMS APPROACH TO INNOVATION AND QUALITY May 23, 2007 Dr. A. BLANTON GODFREY DEAN & JOSEPH D. MOORE DISTINGUISHED UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY

Innovate or die! Jack Welch

Bit by bit these tools have taken companies away from viable competitive positions. Paul Mugge, Director, Center for Innovation Management Studies

The Innovation Imperative April 24, 2006 edition of BusinessWeek magazine Paul Mugge, Director, Center for Innovation Management Studies

The quest for productivity, quality and speed has launched a number of management tools: TQM, Reengineering, Six Sigma, Outsourcing, etc. Senior managers are frustrated by their inability to translate gains into sustainable, profitable growth. Paul Mugge, Director, Center for Innovation Management Studies

Innovation Defined Innovation is much broader than invention, it is the commercially successful use of inventions. Innovation is turning ideas into a business success. Innovation must always be user focused. Innovation Management is a multidisciplinary process that involves Strategy, Marketing, Finance, Economics, Logistics, Operations, etc. to create new and valued products, services, and business models. Paul Mugge, Director, Center for Innovation Management Studies

Every year 25,000 new products hit the market but 94% crash and burn. Robert McMath is the proprietor of a 65,000-item collection in Ithaca, NY at the New Products Showcase & Learning Center, Inc. or the museum of failed products. Alderman s Eye, CBC News, January 2000

HOW TO MANAGE INNOVATION Levels: Firm Industry Macro-environment Competences: Idea Management Market Management Portfolio Management Platform Management Project Management Dimensions: Strategy Organization & Culture Process Techniques & Tools Metrics These elements can be learned, practiced, measured, and improved, i.e., managed. Paul Mugge, Director, Center for Innovation Management Studies
