1 The Story of an Emininent Illinois Lab The Decision and Control Laboratory (DCL) at Illinois traces its origins to an adaptive systems research group established in the Coordinated Science Laboratory in 1959 by CSL associate director Mac Van Valkenburg. The group consisted of just two people: Van Valkenburg and his freshly graduated advisee, José Cruz (PhD 1959), whose dissertation extended traditional circuit theory to address systems with time-varying components, introducing ideas from the emerging field of automatic control. Nearly 5 years later, the DCL claims 2 faculty from five departments and enjoys a reputation second to none in the world of control,...
2 Our Focus The mission of the Decision and Control Laboratory is to create intelligence and autonomy... In many of today's applications there is an abundance of information, due to advances in sensor and network technologies... The challenge these days:... create intelligent systems that can perform effectively under diverse circumstances... can adapt to maintain reliability even in a highly uncertain, complex, and dynamic environment.
3 Our Focus The mission of the Decision and Control Laboratory is to create intelligence and autonomy... In many of today's applications there is an abundance of information, due to advances in sensor and network technologies... The challenge these days:... create intelligent systems that can perform effectively under diverse circumstances... can adapt to maintain reliability even in a highly uncertain, complex, and dynamic environment. We seek tools to obtain control solutions for complex, dynamic behaviors,...the Internet and other cyberphysical systems, genetic networks, swarms of robots, or economic markets. The creation of these tools requires application of both new and old mathematics
