4 Our Mission The Beckman for Advanced Science & Technology is the largest university-based interdisciplinary research facility of its kind. It was founded on the premise that reducing the barriers between traditional scientific and technological disciplines can yield research advances that more conventional approaches cannot.

Integrative Imaging (IntIm) The Integrative Imaging (IntIm) research theme is dedicated to bringing together ideas, modalities, and people in imaging to foster the interdisciplinary discovery of fundamental principles in imaging science, new enabling technologies for the next generation of imaging instruments, and novel techniques for basic and translational research. Molecular & Electronic Nanostructures (M&ENS) The Molecular & Electronic Nanostructures (M&ENS) research theme seeks to develop an understanding of chemical and physical processes involving structures on the nanometer scale. Biomelecules, mesoscopic semiconductor-based systems, and macromolecular assemblies are studied with emphasis on future electronic or optoelectronic applications.

9 Strategic Initiatives Two new strategic initiatives have been formed within the Beckman Imaging building campus-wide collaborative integrated community in imaging science, imaging technology, and the application, use, and interpretation of images Social Dimensions of Environmental Policy research toward understanding the social and political -economic forces shaping just and sustainable environmental policy These initiatives seek to unify campus efforts in their respective areas

15 Beckman Centralized Facilities Biomedical Imaging Center is home to a wide variety of research programs, providing facilities, equipment, and training for research on nuclear magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy. A recent initiative is the integration of MR methods with simultaneous optical imaging. Illinois Simulator Laboratory provides state-of-the-art facilities to support the integration of advanced technologies which allow researchers to conduct experiments in human multi-modal perception and cognition. Imaging Technology Group provides Beckman and campus researchers with state-of-the-art microscopy and visualization facilities.
