SI-DRIVE Methodology: Based on the Theoretical Framework PAGE 9
Social Innovation Comprehensive Working Definition Social innovation is seen as: a new combination or figuration of practices in areas of social action; prompted by certain actors or constellations of actors; with the goal of better coping with needs and problems than is possible by use of existing practices. An innovation is therefore social to the extent that it varies social action, and is socially accepted and diffused in society. Depending on circumstances of social change, interests, policies and power, social ideas as well as successfully implemented SI may be transformed and ultimately institutionalised as regular social practice or made routine. PAGE 10
The Five Key Dimensions of Social Innovation Analytical concept: social practise Analyse the ambivalence of SI Potential Scope Impact Functions, roles and new concepts Typology of Social Innovation Capacity building, empowerment & conflict Process dynamics Mechanisms of Diffusion: Imitation, social learning; relationship to social change PAGE 11

Two main empirical phases Mapping 1 - baseline mapping of social innovation (state of the art reports, report of regional strategies, selection of and more cases for a SI database) Step in between: Selection of 300 most important cases based on five key dimensions of SI and associated KPIs as a basis for the selection of the 70 in-depth cases. Mapping 2 (case studies) - typology of social innovation (using mixed method research protocol consisting of detailed interviews, extensive status check, follow up surveys, and Qualitative Comparative Analysis QCA, 70 cases cases (mapping 1) 300 cases (pre-selection 70 cases (case studies) PAGE 14

Main Challenges: What is a Case? A case is what the experts in the region, the policy fields (project partners, advisory board members) think is a relevant Social Innovation case / practice. A case is defined by, has to fit to the working definition of SI-DRIVE (mainly: novelty of the social practice, better and new practice and first diffusion in society). A case has to be described by the five key elements of SI-DRIVE: SI should be described by all the five key dimensions (if not, it is not useful, because of the underlying theoretical framework proposed in SI drive and the qualitative and quantitative analysis proposed). The selection and collection of the SI cases in the first empirical phase will be done through a survey (consisting of open ended and structured questions) The survey Template will be electronic with drop down items, pop up and help features for each of the standardised and open questions PAGE 22
Global Mapping Survey PAGE 23
Projects and Practice Fields In SI-DRIVE case is a project/initiative and - if existing - its corresponding practice field: Project: A project is single and concrete implementation of a solution to respond to social demands, societal challenges or systemic change (e.g. Muhammed Yunus s Grameen Bank which lends micro-credits to poor farmers for improving their economic condition) Practice field: A practice field is a general type of project type or a summary of projects. A practice field expresses general characteristics common to different projects (e.g.microcredit systems) This differentiation enables for getting a deeper insight into upcoming trends and booming areas for solving social demands and societal challenges. PAGE 24
Template design The template is structured in the following 10 subdivisions: 1. Basic project information 2. Practice field information 3. Project partners 4. Addressed social demands and societal challenges 5. Innovative solution 6. Process dynamics 7. Outcomes 8. Governance 9. Organisational capacity and resources 10. Drivers, Barriers & Strategies PAGE 25

The Online Survey The social innovation cases and referring data will be gathered via a survey that is set up as LimeSurvey: Within mapping 1 we aim to gather a plurality of social innovation cases. Thus, the selection and collection of the SI cases in the first empirical phase will be open (to ensure plurality), yet structured to enable comparisons. In addition to the completion by partners, interested persons/institutions are invited to fill a brief template on the website of SI-DRIVE. An open entry field will be made available via the SI-DRIVE webpage in order to enable interested persons to inform on cases they would like to see added to the database. PAGE 28
The Analysing Options The data gathered in the SI-DRIVE database can be analysed, for instance, according to: the different information sources, I.e. information providers such as social innovators (practitioners), the public, funding institutions, etc.; the geographical scope of the practice fields, the projects and the project partners of the cases; the addressed social demands and societal challenges in the different world regions; the innovative solutions provided by social innovation cases; the process dynamics that occur by implementing social innovations in the different world regions; the outcomes of the social innovations and their contributions to change; the governance structures implemented; the drivers, barriers and strategies; and the organisational capacity and resources required in implementing social innovations (each of the items can be analysed within the different policy fields). PAGE 29
Additional Data Gathering Options In advance of setting up the SI-DRIVE database, a screening of available databases, platforms and awards on social innovation was undertaken. The exercise of screening aimed at the identification, selection and initial analysis of well-documented socially innovative projects/initiatives in Europe and the world. In total, 54 databases, platforms and awards were finally selected out of which four were top-ranked. These data sources are regarded as being of great value for our further SI-DRIVE research. Out of the 54 databases, 28 have a worldwide scope. The list of the SI-databases can be viewed in Deliverable 3.1. The four top-ranked data sources are: (Based on volume of case, richness of the cases documented, openness?) 35 Objectives of the report(s) One report for each policy field! Objective 1: To elaborate how the policy field s governance system influences social innovation practice fields and projects and, vice versa, how it is influenced/changed by them. Thereby, drivers and barriers, conflicts, and roles of different actors should be worked out in detail. Descriptive aim Objective 2: To assess the relation between the policy field s governance system and social innovation practice fields/projects on the EU, national and global level. Analytical aim Reference to SI-Drive key dimensions: Governance, networks, actors; Process Dynamics; Resources
Central Research Question What kind of social innovation practices can be found in the policy field? To which social needs (or challenges) are they responding? Which concepts of social innovation are present? Reference to SI-Drive key dimensions: Concepts; societal needs and challenges PAGE 38
