6 BIM BUILDING INFORMATION MODELLING (BIM) Ramboll is at the forefront of digital design, offering the most advanced expertise in Building Information Modelling (BIM) and computational analysis. Whether they are composing a new software script to optimise building performance, or creating new laserbased modelling methods, our digital specialists are leaders in their fields. Digital design unlocks project value Digital design is a broad term that embraces many specialisms. Our advanced digital expertise falls into roughly two areas: the work we do working with Building Information Modelling (BIM), and the work we do with computational design. What unites our digital capabilities is a commitment to value. We believe that collectively as an industry we have only begun to scratch the surface of what these tools can offer. Much of our most exciting R&D work is happening in this field. Driving innovation in the best practice use of BIM Building Information Modelling, or BIM, is the use of a single, integrated 3D model throughout the design and construction life cycle of a project. Useful for clash detection and integration of disciplines, BIM is quickly becoming an industrystandard practice, though individual approaches to it differ widely. We have long been fluent in the use of Rhino, Bentley MS, Revit and other modelling software, and 3D analysis is well embedded in our design culture. Our BIM specialists are also making strides in the development of a fourth dimension. Ramboll is a multi-disciplinary engineering practice who are ahead of the regional curve in their implementation of BIM. We are working with the firm on two complex projects where the entire design process has been undertaken in a 3D environment with the design teams working through linked models where the entire project environment is modeled to a significant level of detail. 8 LASER SCANNING LASER SCANNING We offer a comprehensive range of services to the digital design sector covering the full spectrum of engineering disciplines. A laser Scanner is a tripod based unit which rapidly fires a laser beam many millions of times over a complex structure, generating hundreds of thousands of individual measurements with millimetre accuracy. These scans are then merged together through powerful computer algorithms; this process is called registration. The product generated by registration is a point cloud and can be thought of as a 3D model of the structure. This point cloud is used to measure, cut sections and elevations and can be imported into various other software platforms. laser scanning has massive advantages when considering complicated or irregular structures, areas of heavily congested services, detailed stonework or rock faces. Traditionally BIM has been seen as a technology only suited to new build projects. This was due to the cost and complexity of performing detailed measured surveys of existing complex elements. This coupled with the possibility of inaccurate as built documentation resulted in very few existing buildings being modelled. Ramboll s specialist bridge teams have been using laser scanning technology for over 15 years to capture intricate geometry used to form masonry arch bridges. Accurate geometry being a critical factor in the mathematical models used to calculate the stress distribution. Due the integrated working environment Ramboll promotes, it wasn t long before this advanced geometry capture technique crossed over, and was applied to, the Oil & Gas and Buildings sectors. By using our in-house laser survey teams we are able to produce accurate and detailed surveys of almost any existing environment. We call this Laser Aided Modeling, or LAM. The joining of the approaches used in BIM and the data collection technology made possible by 3D laser scanning for the first time makes it possible to link computer modelling with the detail of the existing built environment. Now BIM can be extended to include existing buildings, structures and the landscape. The possibilities that this brings to building reuse are enormous. Ramboll are leading the application of laser technology applied to BIM and have even registered the name Laser Aided Modelling (LAM) for the process. Projects where LAM has already been used by Ramboll all involve building reuse, but have each focussed on particular issues including; façade retention, remediation for ground movement, structural monitoring, modeling existing MEP services, providing geometry for structural and environmental analysis, tracking projects and providing quantities. Integral with LAM are the skills Ramboll have developed in 3D modelling, surveying and numerical simulation. Modelling tools that have been deployed for this work include; Revit, Rhinoceros, NavisWorks, AutoCAD, Microstation and SketchUp. Links to design engines such as SCIA, ETABS, Fastrack and IES, along with numerical simulation programs such as ANSUS and DIANA, and computational fluid dynamics using ANSYS CFX. The station is a listed building and has a number of different phases of construction, with differing structural configurations. Also the reaction of the station complex to ground movement is very dependent upon its geometry and the resulting stiffness. 3D laser scanning was used to survey the labyrinth of masonry vaults beneath the station concourse and this data used to develop 3D CAD geometry and mathematical models to undertake structural analysis and quantify the effects of predicted ground movement.
