2 Joint University Microelectronics Program (JUMP) Objectives Drive long-term research in microelectronics with key players in industry and from academia Develop long-range ideas that will drive formation of new DARPA programs Program overview Six centers focused on six major long-range microelectronic research themes DARPA + seven or more industrial sponsors $40M/year anticipated funding for 5 years ($24M/year from industry; $16M/year from DARPA) U.S. university faculty as investigators JUMP Vision To drive pathfinding research efforts at scale in new computing and communication technologies through enhanced DARPA-industry collaboration, funding, and guidance of university center research DARPA DARPA Role in JUMP DARPA will participate in the selection/evaluation process as a member of the JUMP Governing Council and Scientific Advisory Board DARPA program managers will serve as JUMP mentors Industry Industry guidance to university research Academia The competition/selection process will be managed by the Semiconductor Research Corporation 2

7 Ideal Center Characteristics A strong research program aligned with one of the JUMP themes Great ideas and great investigators Novel R&D pathfinding at scale for major DARPA programs in the next 3-5 years Goal of implementation in DoD systems in the 10-year time frame A defined method to adapt the center to an evolving environment External factors such as new research results outside of the center Internal factors such as task success/failure and/or new needs A concise central idea ( grand challenge ) that connects and drives center activities NOT a conglomeration of activities around the theme area The central idea serves as the core for selection of tasks in the center An effective method to coordinate center tasks and investigators Clear final and interim objectives for the center Objectives that provide a strong indication of R&D progress Should include demonstrations that both focus and display center activities Should include yearly objectives as well as final objectives An Electron Beam Brownian Motion We want this Not this Wikimedia Commons Cameca Corp Wikimedia Commons Loo Kang Wee 7
