No Summary of module content This module examines and analyses the critical path and process of sourcing textiles and garments for the Fashion Business. Students will be introduced to the key criteria that underpin sourcing decisions and how sourcing options may be assessed. The module will also introduce students to the principles of cost comparisons between raw materials and labour and discuss centres of excellence in the global market place. Students will explore future considerations involving innovation and technology and new strategies and opportunities for fabric and garment development with consideration of the ethical and environmental impact of Textiles and the evaluation of their use in the current market. Learning outcomes By the end of the module the successful student will be able to: LO1. Demonstrate understanding of the manufacturing process of fabrics and present textile terminology creatively and confidently. (KU) LO2. Evaluate the time required to develop specific textiles and garments. (KU)

2 LO3. Analyse the cost of procuring fabric and garments and their impact on both people and planet. Consider the environmental impact of products. (PPP) LO4. Discuss the issues around sustainable and ethical manufacture and propose a creative solution to a brief using innovation or sustainability. (KU) Course outcomes the module contributes to: LO5.1 Demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the range planning process. Apply product development, sourcing and selection knowledge to develop business and trading. (KU) LO5.2 Explore and evaluate the global nature of textile and garment manufacture, and debate its impact on the environment and the community within an ethical framework. (KU) LO 5.9 Understand the global pipeline for fashion and the implications on the critical path. Identifying and assess key drivers and trends within the retail industry, textile and garment manufacture. 3 Assessment rationale Formative assessment will take the form of proposal for the presentation Assignment 1: Individual Presentation: 30% This assignment assesses the students use of professional terminology when discussing and evaluating fabric and production options associated with the critical path of a Fashion product. Assignment 2; Academic research proposal and executive summary: 70% Word count This assessment requires research into new areas of development, sustainability or innovation within textile and garment manufacturing from specific sources. The research proposal will assess the students ability to research and identify key concepts and sources for the evaluation of a tutor agreed topic, prepare an academic proposal and then present a summary of the key research findings in the form of an extended abstract or executive summary. Formative assessment will be via peer discussion and a first draft tutorial for the research proposal. Engage the audience, speaking confidently and professionally Management of Information and Research Techniques Manage and select appropriate information from a range of credible sources. Analysis and Evaluation Identify and evaluate the issues in context of textile development and production. Ensure the relevance of the issues relate to the specific product. Organisation Can take responsibility for own learning with the minimum of direction.
