Dear Customers and Partners, Ladies and Gentlemen, 2016 was an eventful year. Two leading trade fairs, drupa and K, shaped events starts directly with another milestone for the industry the interpack in May. For W&H this means having the chance to present our full range of products and services to an interested audience within twelve months. This underscores that W&H is the only machine builder covering the entire process chain from granulate to completed sack. We use this expertise to create solutions for our customers. Only because of this comprehensive portfolio we can offer complete lines from a single source. But the more important benefit for our customers is our broad-based approach with the entire process chain in view, which leads to an optimization of each individual step. From extrusion and printing through to processing we always have the next step in mind as well. Both drupa and K were dominated by the topic INDUSTRY 4.0. This means a changed manufacturing process is being taken into account: work steps and locations, even outside the company s boundaries, are increasingly viewed as an integrated whole. With increasing technological possibilities, e.g. for data availability and evaluation, this trend will continue to strengthen, as it offers considerable potential for optimization. As the only supplier covering the whole process chain, we offer our customers an unparralleled breadth of knowledge. At the same time, it is important for us to keep the everyday challenges of today in sight. We know that the benefits to be gained especially improved efficiency are the decisive purchasing arguments for our customers in the highly competitive market environment. That is why we created PACKAGING 4.0: intelligent machines, integrated processes, intuitive operation. PACKAGING 4.0 bundles our concrete solutions and innovations under these main headings on the one hand, and on the other hand it provides our development efforts with a clear direction as a vision for the future. With concrete, beneficial solutions we are thus implementing step-by-step the production system of the future in the here and now. What this means in terms of machines could be seen most recently at the K The FILMEX cast film extrusion line, for example, enables a data network spanning all of the process steps. This makes the entire production process transparent and also serves to safeguard consistent quality. For our customers, this means 100% control over their production process. The result: high productivity and outstandingly consistent quality for optimum film performance during downstream processing. This is one good example for how PACKAGING 4.0 already provides solutions to the industry's challenges. The evolution of intelligent machinery could also be observed: For years now, we have offered an Information System Production (ISP) which records, analyses and processes all of the production and process parameters to provide real-time monitoring of productivity and final product quality. When combined with our intuitive PROCONTROL TS operating concept, this provides permanent transparency: at the machine, in the office and even from mobile locations. At the K, we presented the next intelligent machine generation: the VAREX with TURBOCLEAN performs an automated product change in approximately 12 minutes. In contrast, a manual changeover by the operator takes up to 40 minutes. This represents 28 minutes of productivity gains per product changeover and this does not even include the material and energy savings. All these innovations would not have been possible without the strong and trusting cooperation with you, our customers and partners. 3 EXTRA SPRING 2017 ISSUE 26 K 2016 RECORD TIME FOR MORE PRODUCTIVITY: PRODUCT CHANGEOVER IN 12 MINUTES What do 28 minutes and 10 elephants have in common? Both were examples to show our visitors at K 2016 what it means to do a product change in only 12 minutes. Three times a day guests were able to witness live the changeover from a collation shrink film to food packaging film including color and size changes in record time at the VAREX with TURBOCLEAN. Today, small jobs are the standard and changeovers pose the biggest challenges to blown film production. According to a customer survey, nine percent of productivity is lost during job changes; this represents hands down the biggest percentage of machine downtime, said Dr. Lennart Ederleh, Technical Sales Director Extrusion Equipment at W&H. He adds: "With TURBOCLEAN, we have been able to increase production time by up to 6 %. In addition to announcing this innovation we also directly wanted to proof it with the live changeover we successfully did exactly that." Automated and simultaneously instead of manually and one after another Today s job changeover on a multi-layer line can take up to 40 minutes, the reason being that the machine operator performs the process manually, one component after another. With TURBOCLEAN, such changeovers can be as short as only 12 minutes. This is possible because all steps are automated and are run simultaneously. The processes are integrated in the machine and the machine operator is guided through the process steps inside by the user-friendly PROCONTROL TS touch screen operator panel. A simple push of the button initiates the changeover. The operator is instructed when to take the suction hose out of one material container and place it in another. After that, TURBOCLEAN finishes the process all on its own. The exhibit also showcased the new FILMATIC T winder with a compact design and an increased maximum possible roll diameter, which allows for an additional 17,5 % of film on a roll. PACKAGING 4.0 made real Visitors were able to experience all that live at K show. With the demonstration of a 12-minute job change, we made PACKAGING 4.0 real for our visitors, said Ederleh. In an entertaining way, the show also included more information about the effects of the intelligent machine on the efficiency of production. Just to quote one fun example from the show: Using two VAREX" lines running three product changes per day, 60 tons of resin can be saved that is the average weight of ten elephants. With over 10,000 visitors at the booth the show was a huge success. We are especially happy that we met the demands of the market. Faster changeovers are a growing challenge in the market, we now offer a solution for them. Trade show premiere: Live job changeover with both size and color changes seen distinctly on the reel. W&H is the first and only machine manufacturer to show live changeovers at a trade show. We demonstrated product changeovers 3x daily, including recipe, format and color in just 12 minutes on the VAREX with TURBOCLEAN. 3

4 K 2016 EFFICIENT PRODUCTION OF STAND-UP POUCHES Stand-up pouches become more and more important for brand owners and consumers alike. Especially for that reason producers see themselves confronted with additional pressure to develop new solutions for more efficient and more productive production while maintaining high quality of the final packaging. Achieving best-in-class optics and mechanical properties while minimizing resin consumption, perfect film flatness for top print results along with high output and clock rates are the most important of the challenges producers are faced with today. Together with Total and Coveris W&H has found a solution for these challenges. At the K show, the 3-layer OPTIMEX produced a thin laminating film with a thickness of only 60 µm, excellent appearance and a major potential for down-gauging for an efficient production of stand-up pouches. Working in close cooperation with the raw materials producer, Total, W&H experts developed a formula, which is ideal for downstream processing of stand-up pouches. The Result: In contrast to the 80 µm thick films commonly used for the application demonstrated, the system produces a film with a thickness of only 60 µm and an excellent appearance. The use of first-class raw materials creates a major potential for downgauging while maintaining the same quality. The improved mechanical properties were key for a good performance during lamination and the pouchmaking process, tested extensively with partner Coveris. With the OPTIMEX, W&H offers the optimal machine to produce at a constant output of 600 kg/h whilst maintaining a perfect film profile. Especially designed for the middle market segment and distinguished by its outstanding cost-performance ratio, the OPTIMEX further improves the effiency of production. The new recipe was produced on a 3-layer OPTIMEX with a working width of 1,800 mm and a 400 mm nozzle. The proven FILMATIC O-dual winder is the next machine in the system. In addition to the machine demonstrations, visitors were able to judge the quality of the end product for themselves: As a give-away with a little flashlight inside of course packed in a trendy stand-up pouch. 4

5 EXTRA SPRING 2017 ISSUE 26 K 2016 FOCUS ON PLASTIC VALVE SACKS Plastic Valve Sacks provide valuable packaging for construction materials, chemicals and agricultural products, just to name a few. They are an excellent alternative to conventional paper and woven valve sacks as well as to FFS sacks. During the in-house EXPO in Lengerich, guests were able to get an overview of innovations in this area: Starting with a unique high-performance ventilation concept to the POLYTEX tuber and the bottomer AD PLASTIC 2. Protection from moisture and at the same time quick filling of powdery and dusty products into plastic valve sacks that is possible thanks to the new socalled Breathing Chamber technology by W&H. The innovative, high-performance ventilation concept for plastic valve sacks consists of a ventilation chamber along the longitudinal seam of the sack and is offered exclusively by W&H. It provides strong ventilation and allows for quick filling of powdery and dusty products into plastic valve sacks while still protecting the product from moisture. This was demonstrated by exposing the sacks to water in a shower, during which the waterproof property was easy to recognize. POLYTEX tuber For the production of these innovative plastic valve sacks, W&H offers two high-performance machines: the POLYTEX tuber and the bottomer AD PLASTIC 2. The versatile POLYTEX is a tuber that converts flat film into tubes with or without gussets, making it a top choice for FFS and valve sack applications. AD PLASTIC 2 bottomer With the AD PLASTIC 2 a second machine demonstration awaited the visitors: the benchmark bottomer for plastic valve sacks. The machine distinguishes itself with its innovative sealing process. The need for adhesives or paste is eliminated, which leads to cleaner production and significant savings. The AD PLASTIC 2 offers a high level of automation at production speeds up to 120 sacks per minute a highlight in the demonstration of the machine. 5

8 K 2016 PREMIER OF THE FILMEX WITH FPM: EXCEPTIONAL QUALITY CONSISTENCY At our headquarters in Lengerich, another technology celebrated its premiere during K: The FILMEX with FPM, a new generation cast film line for stretch-, CPP- and barrier applications. The intelligent machine achieves excellent productivity and consistently exceptional film quality for optimal downstream processing. This is made possible by the newly-developed FILM PERFORMANCE MONITOR (FPM) module, which is completely integrated into the FILMEX, making it an intelligent machine as defined by PACKAGING 4.0. First and foremost, our customers expect high output and that their line is running reliably so they can be competitive. But that alone isn t enough, said Dr. Torsten Schmitz, Division Manager of Cast Film at Windmöller & Hölscher. There is a growing demand for better and more consistent film quality for top performance in the final application. With the development of FILMEX with FPM, W&H is launching a machine that meets these requirements. FILMEX is modular, meaning that each line can be custom configured to meet customer needs. Years of experience in building cast film lines resulted in an optimal and aligned design of each module for highest productivity and quality. The operator-friendly and intuitive PROCONTOL TS touch screen contains and controls all machine components from resin supply to winder. The new FILM PERFORMANCE MONITOR (FPM) module is completely integrated into the FILMEX automation system. Data from the FPM is recorded continuously during production and each roll is given a data matrix or QR code with its unique identification, including FPM quality data. Using this identification along with a suitable connection to the lab or downstream equipment, production can become more efficient. By creating a network of all process steps, the full production chain becomes transparent enabling targeted optimization along the entire value chain. The FILMEX with FPM provides transparency of the film production process and gives our customers 100 % control, underscores Schmitz, adding, With this technology film producers can shift the focus of their marketing approach to quality of the film instead of price per kilo a valuable argument for many of our customers, so the feedback at the trade fair, says Schmitz. SAFE LOGISTICS AND THE REDUCTION OF TRANSPORTATION LOSSES With the incredible diversity of the Asia Pacific region comes the unfortunate total lack of standardized efforts to provide stable transported loads. Leading film supplier THONG GUAN Plastic and Paper Industries Bhd works directly with brand owners, manufacturers, and distributors throughout the region to ensure the safe, reliable delivery of goods. In Europe load stability has gained momentum with the upcoming EUMOS regulations. The drivers behind these regulations are equally important in others markets: costs and more importantly lives have to be saved. At the same time, better resins and extrusion technology in the recent years, have provided the means for downgauging activities in stretch film thickness. With these advances also came questions: How thin is safe? Is the load stable and safe? THONG GUAN wanted to give answers to these questions and so works closely with the Newton Research & Development Centre (Newton). In partnership with the DOW Chemicals Company, the Newton Institute offers the ProtectionPlus program, to improve protection of goods during transportation, while reducing waste and associated costs. Load safety benefits the customer and society On the one hand we wanted to provide a value added to our customers. On the other hand we see it as part of our corporate social responsibility to support road safety, explains PK ANG, Executive Director at THONG GUAN. Newton provides dynamic simulations of palletized loads, utilizing THONG GUAN s vast experience in blown and cast film production and a broadbased knowledge of packaging film applications. These simulations give end users experience of similar 'real life' packaging conditions of their respective production floors or warehouses. The palletized loads are wrapped and tested to conform to the required g-forces seen during transportation. In this unique dynamic lab, land, sea, air and rail shunting can be simulated. The static lab adds information about the film performance, e.g. stiffness, puncture and retention force. Newton also offers professional training, workshops and awareness seminars on the importance of safe logistics. State-of-the-art-equipment The Newton Institute has the latest state-ofthe-art-equipment for dynamic simulation of both secondary and tertiary packaging. The installed strapping, stretch hooder and stretch wrapping machines are available to replicate the tertiary packaging application relevant to nearly all industry segments. THONG GUAN s latest range of stretch films are produced on a 33 layer 4,000 mm wide cast film extrusion line by W&H. A partnership that is about to become even deeper: Only three months after commissioning the first FILMEX, THONG GUAN already ordered a new FILMEX cast film line, with a similar specification as the first. The nano-layer films produced on the W&H machine are tested in the Newton lab for various film properties and wrapping applications. Each reel produced is given an individual number, with the final reel being identified with a label, containing a code. Against each code, all extrusion and winding parameters are stored, in a central database. During laboratory testing on both Highlight Industries test stand and ESTL s FILM PERFORMANCE Tester, the code is scanned, and all relevant test data uploaded to the same database and stored with the production run. THONG GUAN was one of the first customers to install a prototype of this FILM PERFORMANCE MONITOR (FPM). It is in line with our vision to be a technological leader. We fulfill our promise to our customers to provide value along the supply chain and give them a competitive edge. Within the Newton Institute, a Highlight Industries Synergy 4 wrapper will be equipped with a Highlight HiLife data capture module, that will be directly interfaced to the FPM. With this concept THONG GUAN is able to accurately monitor both the production consistency of their nano-layer films, as well as the application consistency of the film on an end user s pallet. The results speak for themselves Our nano-layer film is designed to provide high load containment force that works extremely well with high speed power prestretch wrappers. The film is glossy and has excellent resistance against splitting or tearing, hence it not only reduces failure rates during the wrapping process, but also increases the packaging line s productivity, said PK ANG. The concept of Newton as a real life simulation station is equally successful. Customers who send their pallets to Newton for simulation are not only able to reduce the wrapping cost per pallet (typically %), but also achieve the required safety standard for passing the Acceleration Test on a EUMOS certified bench (0.5 g / 0.8 g). For THONG GUAN that is only the beginning: We believe high performance film rightly applied, will optimize pallet load stability and safety. We envisage a future where technology and innovation will revolutionize the safety of the world s loads the FILMEX with FPM is one step towards this goal. 9

10 PRINT THE NEXT GENERATION EXPERIENCE THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE PRODUCT PORTFOLIO OF PRINTING PRESSES FOR FLEXIBLE PACKAGING At the EXPO, visitors were able to see demonstrations of the printing machines introduced to the market during drupa. But only six month after the trade fair, there were already new developments waiting for the visitors. In addition to the MIRAFLEX C, HELIOSTAR A and DYNASTAR models presented in May, two new developments for flexographic and gravure printing were presented, MIRAFLEX A and HELIOSTAR S. W&H also demonstrated the VISION package, available for all new-generation presses. This package consists of integrated assistance systems that increase the machine's intelligence and significantly enhance its efficiency. Altogether, W&H offers package printers the most comprehensive portfolio for printing flexible packaging materials. Whereas commercial and illustration printing are declining, package printing is a growth market. Last year's drupa confirmed this fact once again, stated Ulrich Harte, Manager Marketing Printing and Finishing Machines. We want to further expand our leading position in this market. That is why we already offer package printers the most comprehensive machine portfolio for printing flexible packaging materials, from narrow machines for short jobs and very fast job changes to highly-automated systems with high output. MIRAFLEX the intelligent flexographic printing press The MIRAFLEX was again one of the highlights at the in-house EXPO during K. Optimized accessibility, improved ergonomics and sustainability combined with intuitive operation guests could experience these merits of the new machine generation for themselves. The automatic cleaning of the impression cylinder along with the TURBOCLEAN ADVANCED E inking unit and wash-up system with special electric pumps for pulsation-free ink circulation are only two examples of the numerous innovations that the new machine offers. Furthermore, the machine demonstrations of the MIRAFLEX also featured the latest VISION modules. These integrated assistance modules enhance the machine's intelligence and provide the operator with maximum control over the machine. In addition to the C-Series, the A-Series was introduced during K show. DYNASTAR the new, compact gravure printing press for ultra-short jobs In live demonstrations, the DYNASTAR showed how it is possible to achieve high profitability, even for short and ultrashort print runs of less than 3,000 meters. The machine is characterized by a job changeover time is half that of the quickchange gravure printing presses commonly used today. A revolutionary changeable cylinder concept with slide-in carts forms the heart of the new machine. The innovative procedure enables the preparations for the next print job to be carried out while the machine is still running. HELIOSTAR S highest gravure print quality The HELIOSTAR S is distinguished by its high and constant printing quality coupled with outstanding performance, the shortest setup times and high profitability. Visitors also had the opportunity to examine the new compact, waste-saving and ergonomic machine design. Naturally, all of the VISION package modules for production monitoring and print inspection are also available on the HELIOSTAR S. 10

Installation of a 67 VISTAFLEX CL 10 is well underway at the Terreborne, Quebec-based NELMAR Group of Companies. According to President & CEO, Neil Freder, The VISTAFLEX installation is going extremely well. It seems that we are ahead of schedule and could potentially be ready for production by the end of February, if not sooner. The experience has provided a couple of "wow" moments for the employees starting with the sheer size of the machine. Everyone in our factory was awestruck by the size of the drum and the exactitude and patience required to navigate it into a challenging spot. It was an exercise in precision driving, which went off without a hitch, stated Freder. The crew at NELMAR has been attentively watching each step of the process. Collectively we are just beginning to really understand the impact the robotics will have on our changeover times and the benefits of the savings we will achieve through run speeds of up to 2,600 ft/min and fully automatic changeovers." The NELMAR Group of Companies, which includes Plastixx FFS Technologies, Plastixx Extrusion Technologies and Suretraxx Cash Management Systems, is dedicated to the manufacture of tamper evident bags, weather resistant sacks and industrial FFS bags for fine powders, salts, fertilizers, grouts, mortars and all cementitious materials. The 10-color VISTAFLEX joins a fleet of W&H extrusion, printing and converting equipment at NELMAR. The installation of the VISTAFLEX CL at NELMAR Group of Companies: Smooth precision work. PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES OF PACKAGING CONVEX orders one of the first MIRAFLEX C lines. In time for the 40 anniversary of the company, New Zealand-based CONVEX Plastics was one of the first companies to order a MIRAFLEX C line in The machine is equipped with 8 color decks and comes with a large repeat length of 1,130 mm and a press speed of 500 m/min. It is scheduled to be delivered in June The MIRAFLEX C will be delivered with state-of-the-art VISION Package for weband defect inspection, as well as with an inline gravure stand for lacquer application. At CONVEX we believe in pushing the boundaries of packaging to deliver what the customer wants, explains Aaron Collett, Operations Manager at CONVEX. With success: Over the past four decades, CONVEX has evolved from a one-man business with a homemade bag machine making plain plastic bags in a garage to an international supplier of innovative flexible packaging solutions, with offices in three countries and 140 employees. CONVEX operates one OLYMPIA STELLAFLEX and PRIMAFLEX CM flexo press from W&H. To support business growth, CONVEX continuously invested in new machines. The innovations of the new line convinced CONVEX to be one of the first buyers. The higher automation, the changes to the web path and the improvements for easier operations of the MIRAFLEX impressed us. Especially important was also the accuracy of the downstream gravure and the proven track record with the HELIOSTAR stations. CONVEX shares a 20-year relationship with W&H. Collett adds: For me personally this will be the fourth W&H installation I've been a part of at CONVEX and other sites. It s the complete package that makes W&H special: Consultation based on market knowledge, German Engineering of the machines and ongoing support and service. The Ak-Baital Pass, located at an altitude of 4,655 meters in Tajikistan, is undoubtedly one the most unusual locations. We owe this amazing sight to Etienne Cassiani-Igoni - the son of our French representative Lionel Cassiani-Igoni and Victor Eonnet, who took part in a rally from London to Ulan Bator in Mongolia with their Renault R4. The two young men were on the road for three months always accompanied by their car, which they lovingly christened Heidi. In return for their exceptional commitment we provided the two adventurers with organizational support, for example in applying for visas for one or the other of the numerous countries through which their route passed. Heidi, by the way, did not quite manage to complete the rally s final stage in a timely manner which, however, was no problem for the drivers. The road was really the destination here both are content to have enjoyed so many great experiences. On the return journey Etienne, Victor and Heidi made a pit stop at our site in Lengerich. While both drivers will resume their working lives after they return to Paris, the next adventure awaits Heidi: she will be passed on to the rally driver offering the most exciting tour.
