4 MEMC Korea, formerly known as POSCO Huls, was established in 1990 to lead a stable growth of the Korean semiconductor industry by manufacturing the advanced silicon wafers in Korea through a joint venture by POSCO, MEMC, and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. On September 30, 2000, the company changed its name to MEMC Korea for the purpose of leaping toward a new global company by altering the composition of equity(memc 80%, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. 20%). MEMC Korea Company produces the silicon wafers, the core advanced materials of the semiconductor industry. The principal product is the 200mm silicon wafer, and the Company leads the world semiconductor industry by producing prime wafers, T/M wafers, 300mm ingots, and 200 mm ingots. The Company employs around 900 staff members who are developing active corporate culture by harmonizing mutually in different areas with a 4-dimensional way of thinking. 5 MEMC as a Global Company MEMC takes the lead in the global semiconductor industry on the basis of its solid basic technology. Nowadays, the company is setting the standards for silicon wafers in Cheonan, Korea, along with St. Peters, Sherman, and Pasadena, U.S.A., Merano and Novara, Italy, Utsunomiya, Japan, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Hsinchu, Taiwan. 6 The silicon wafer is a sketchpad paper on which a comfortable future of human beings is being drawn. The silicon wafer is a basic material of semiconductors that is the domestic core export item. The silicon wafer, a material that is used widely when a semiconductor device is manufactured, plays a part like a drawing paper designed to draw a comfortable future of human beings with an application to different fields of microelectronics including computers, communications, vehicles, electric home appliances, industrial automation, control systems, analysis systems, and defense systems. Silicon, which is one of the most abundant elements in the earth, is extracted from sand, and an ingot, that is to say, a single crystal ingot grown in a silicon liquid purified to a high degree, is then cut into silicon wafers of equal thickness, and is delivered to the customer through a strict quality inspection and a packaging process after lapping, etching, polishing, and washing. And then, a circuitry is designed on the silicon wafer produced by the company, a mask is manufactured, and semiconductor chips are produced through silicon wafer processing. From sand to semiconductor, MEMC Korea will always be with human beings pursuing the cutting edge of technology.

7 Single Crystal Growth The single crystal growing is the first process to produce silicon wafers. After the poly silicon, which is a raw material of high-degree purity, is smelted at a temperature above 1410 degrees Centigrade in a state of high vacuum in the crystal growing furnace, it is grown into an ingot with a specified diameter by controlling the seed closely. An ingot, which is finished with the growing processing is cooled to a room temperature. In addition, each ingot is evaluated to see whether it coincides with different conditions, and is processed to get a specified diameter. MEMC Korea is developing new ingot-growing technology continuously in order to meet the needs of customers for an improved standard of wafers. Modification Modification is a process of cutting an ingot into slices and making wafers, and realizes high accuracy and flatness that is required by the customer. First, in the process of slicing, an ingot is placed on a graphite beam in order that the crystallographic direction may be aligned properly, and then it is sliced into wafers, namely, thin diskes of single silicon crystal through the most advanced cutting technique. These wafers are made to be flat and uniform in thickness through lapping, and then mechanical damage on the surface is eliminated through etching. Polishing, Cleaning, and Inspection This is the final process where a silicon wafer having a rough etched surface is polished, cleaned, and then produced as a wafer keeping flatness and cleanliness meeting the needs of the customer. In the polishing process, a wafer keeping the highest flatness and damageless surface is produced by an entirely automated machine controling the process with high accuracy. In the cleaning process, contaminants such as particles, metals, and organic matter remaining on the surface after polishing are removed, thus making the wafer extremely flat and flawless. Therefore, from this process, the work progresses under the cleanest environment in which the strictest rules are applied to each kind of contaminants. A completely processed wafer is strictly inspected for electrical properties, mechanical properties, and contamination of the surface through a latest automated inspection system according to the needs of customers, and a product passing the final inspection is packed immediately and delivered to the customer in time. MEMC Korea does its best to improve quality continuously with the use of technology entirely automated and advanced for the satisfaction of the needs of the present and the future.
