2 Why small scale biomethane? Biomethane: has the potential to become an important component in the future energy supply system (< 200 m 3 STP/h biogas) can be used for feed-in or as fuel for transportation contributes to an independent energy supply for rural areas But: it is expensive due to costs for upgrading and feed-in biomethane from small and medium scale plants is even more expensive due to economy of scale to make small scale biomethane economically viable, it requires efficient pre-treatment of substrates and low biogas production cost and low upgrading costs 2

5 Objectives of Record Biomap The overall objective is to bridge the gap between research and industry and to accelerate innovation in small and medium scale biomethane production, thus shorten the time to market of the most promising technologies. Activities of Record Biomap Presentation of profiles and technology descriptions of the most promising technology solutions on the Biomethane Map to support exploitation of research outcomes Knowledge transfer from science to market and policy decision makers and vice versa Connection of relevant stakeholders for new cooperation Communication of funding possibilities Development of new project concepts Review and optimisation of framework conditions (administrative, political, legal) 5

7 Record Biomap Leipzig, Focus on Technologies with Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 3-5 That means TRL 3 (applied research- first laboratory tests) up to TRL 5 (large scale prototype systems). Definition by European Commission: TRL 1 basic principles observed TRL 2 technology concept formulated TRL 3 experimental proof of concept TRL 4 technology validated in lab TRL 5 technology validated in relevant environment (industrially relevant environment in the case of key enabling technologies) TRL 6 technology demonstrated in relevant environment (industrially relevant environment in the case of key enabling technologies) TRL 7 system prototype demonstration in operational environment TRL 8 system complete and qualified TRL 9 actual system proven in operational environment (competitive manufacturing in the case of key enabling technologies; or in space) Goal is to support the development of technologies with TRL 3-5 on their way to the next levels 7
