Background Vision: Gexcon R&D and Gexcon Application develop the leading software for dispersion, fire and explosion safety : FLACS What: FLACS is a special type of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver: Porosity / Distributed Resistance (PDR). Challenge: Limited marked and relatively complex software system. Goal for 2020: Modernize the PDR solver and extend the functionality of FLACS to 3D Risk Management (3DRM).

FLACS v11 with Flacs-3 The CFD solver Flacs-3 will in future replace Flacs-2 (current version Flacs-2.5.5) First release of the AMR feature in 2018 Validated for dispersion only Validated for static grids Further releases Adaptive mesh in dispersion simulations Validated physics models for dispersion, explosion and fire
Fundamental changes The Joint Industry Project (JIP) FLACS 2011 and beyond ( ) revealed inherent limitations in the model system.
Fundamental changes The value of Flacs-3 would be limited with the old model system. JIP MEASURE ( ): fundamental changes to turbulence and combustion models in Flacs-2.
Acknowledgements Statoil, Total, ExxonMobil, Engie, BP and DNV GL sponsored JIP MEASURE. The experimental campaign is conducted in cooperation with Shell.
Prototype of FLACS JIP MEASURE ( ): Prototype of FLACS released to sponsors FLACS v10.5-jip-measure Opt Validated and optimized against selected (large-scale) explosion experiments from the validation database. Improved results for several non-safety gap scenarios. Improved results for several JIP MEASURE safety gap experiments. However, several experiments require further investigation.
Prototype of FLACS Significantly different results from the standard release.
Prototype of FLACS Higher overpressures were observed for some largescale, realistic geometries.
Further development in 2017 Physics models developed as part of JIP MEASURE ( ) implemented in the Flacs-3 solver. Further development: improved handling of wall-distances input to the turbulence model. Significantly changed results!
Qualification for release Flacs-3 with new turbulence and combustion models from JIP MEASURE will be verified, validated and optimized in Will give different results from the prototype FLACS v10.5-jip-measure Opt Satisfactory performance will be demonstrated according to criteria in the model evaluation protocol prior to commercial release. Beta-versions released for testing.
Gas explosion modelling The current prioritised list of validation experiments from the database for gas explosions includes 448 experiments. Covers a wide range of physical phenomena.
Model evaluation Qualitative and quantitative performance criteria Trends represented correctly with variations in setup/parameters? Detailed analysis of selected results: pressure-time traces and flame speed curves connected to the physical phenomena. Reasonable sensitivity to perturbations in initial/boundary conditions. Statistical performance measures for maximum overpressure, pressure impulse and flame speeds: acceptance limits for geometric mean bias (0.5 < MG < 2), geometric mean variance (VG < 3.3, factor three scatter ), and fraction within a factor of two (FAC2 > 50 %).
Dispersion modelling A range of simple benchmark simulations tests have been performed, most of them in high Reynolds number flows (e.g. axi-symmetric jets). Further validation will cover a broader range of cases, including typical dispersion scenarios related to accidental releases: Low Reynolds number flows. Buoyancy driven flows (e.g. large scale evaporating pool tests).

HySEA Improving Hydrogen Safety for Energy Applications through prenormative research on vented deflagrations Project period: 1 September August 2018 Consortium: Gexcon (Coordinator), University of Warwick (UWAR), University of Pisa (UNIPI), Fike Europe, Impetus Afea and Hefei University of Technology (HFUT, self-funded ) Total budget: About 1.5 MEUR + about 0.5 MEUR (HFUT) Website:
HySEA Consortium
Summary Phase 1 Constructed experimental setup for investigating the effect of internal congestion on vented hydrogen deflagrations in 20-foot ISO containers. Completed 34 vented explosion experiments in 20-foot ISO containers: 14 tests vented through the container doors, and 20 tests vented through openings in the roof. Completed first HySEA blind-prediction study. Publications available at website: 24

Summary: 40-feet ISO container Container: 12 m x 2.5 m x 2.5 m Steel plate thickness: 25 mm Explosion vents: 20 x 0.75 m x 0.75 m Expected start-up of experiments: April 2018
Test site: 40-feet ISO container

Phase 2 experiments The second experimental campaign with inhomogeneous mixtures in 20-foot containers started in September Effect of initial turbulence (homogeneous mixtures). Continuous stratification produced by a long-duration buoyant leak on the floor (inhomogeneous mixtures, including the second HySEA blind-prediction study). Transient releases (turbulence + inhomogeneous). Specific scenarios: high congestion and possibly static pressure load (PIdiagram) for closed container (homogeneous mixtures).

Hy3DRM (ENERGIX) The 3DRM concept entails: Use of site-specific 3D geometry models to support risk analyses, risk assessments, risk communication, safety training, safety-related asset management, emergency preparedness and response, etc. Focus on people, teams and continuous integration. The use of as is (or what if ) geometries, not as built geometries. Direct visual comparison between CFD and engineering models.
